Basho attendance

Recommended Posts

Day 1 had a full house with 6800 spectators just like last year day 1. Sales have been better than last year - 5 days have been sold-out in advance, but not day 1. Days 2-5 were the most likely to have the full-house streak stop again this year - and it stopped today with just 5200 of close to 7000. http://www.jiji.com/jc/article?k=2016111400758&g=spo

For the 4 days with the worst attendance (2-5) the NSK invited them - but that was not enough today and likely won't be the next 2 days.

Edit: only 44 (45, but 43 reported to be there) were invited. http://www.sankei.com/sports/news/161114/spo1611140032-n1.html

From different Kumamoto municipalities each day, a total of 180. Yesterday for the 45 invitations possible each day, 419 from Kumamoto-city had applied - only 43 were actually there. The other days are for smaller towns and villages.  http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASJCG3V55JCGTIPE01M.html

After a 2-day stop (day 3 had 5250) and after 20 years again a Kyushu day 4 was declared a full house, with 5600 spectators. Till the end of the basho full houses are guaranteed because today also saw the man-in onrei banners. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1739093.html

Day 1 was 10th in the TV ratings with 14.4%, day 3 with 1000 for Hakuho was the best so far this basho with 15%. http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2016/11/17/0009673832.shtml

It looks like an early complete sell-out for the Hatsu basho, only very few tickets are left: http://sumo.pia.jp/vacant/va01.jsp

The numbers for last basho (bold: full house, underline: sell-out)

day  Spectators  TV rank Kanto  -ratings -Kansai     %
1 6800                  (10) 14.4 17 14.9
2 5200 19 13.6
3 5250 19 13.6
4 5600 13 15
5 5670 15 14.9
6 6150 8 16.5
7 6986 5 19.2 5 17.4
8 6986 7 18 6 16.9
9 6350 9 17.8
10 6700 14 16.9
11 6986 9 17.8 14 16.5
12 6800 13 17.1
13 6350 12 17.2 18 15.6
14 6986 7 19.7 8 17.3
15 6986 18 15

The special interest for Kansai was local Goeido on the tsuna run - but that only really showed for day 1. In other rankings day 1 appears for Kanto in the top 20/30, but not in the ones I used for this:

I was able to get tickets for Day 9. Will probably be standing in line early in the morning for Day 8!

I have tickets for Day 5, I am only in Tokyo until 18th Jan, how hard is it to get tickets in the morning and what time do you have to arrive, I would really like to go to more than 1 day.  My daughter and I arrive on the 11th from Australia and Day 5 is the earliest I can get there.

Best queue up between 6am-6.30am, then you will be standing in rows of 4 until 8am.

They will then issue you queue numbers (exactly 400) around 7.30-7.45am that you use to buy the tickets.

After buying the tickets, it is recommended for you to enter the kokugikan to "reserve" your free seating on the topmost row on the 2nd floor. There are 100 seats on each side, leave something on the seat (coat, umbrella, etc)

The last remaining chair seat tickets have all been sold - no advance tickets left: http://sumo.pia.jp/ticketInformation.do?eventCd=1646877&rlsCd=003

Only resellers may still offer them, otherwise the tickets of the day: 2200 Yen, no card payment, sales start at the kokugikan 7:45a.m. One per person - all that want to enter have to queue up together.

Confirming and expanding on what's in the previous post, Sanspo mentions that it's the first time since 1996 (!) that all advance tickets have been sold prior to the banzuke release date.

Approximately 300 general admission tickets to be sold each day apparently.

Looks bad for Kintayama's massive May visit...

Not really. Often it's a matter of being sure to buy tickets as soon as they go onsale.

One of my most computer-savvy friends thought so; she ended up with row 13 -- last row on sale!  There's an awful lot of people out there who know when to get online.

To have a really good chance to get a ticket, one should enter the pre-advance sales lottery during the Haru basho: only day and type of seat can be chosen and for the real popular days one might not even with that get an A seat.

I guess I was just lucky the last couple of times. I wanted tickets for the first 4 days (Hatsu 2015) and ended up getting great seats for Days 3 and 4. Waited in line on Day 2 and was able to get one. This time, I forgot to get them when they first went onsale, but 3 days later I was able to grab 7 seats for Day 9. Unfortunately, the seats aren't all together. As I'll only be in Japan for a week this trip, I only really have time for one day of sumo. But definitely plan to come back in May if we can arrange a group visit!

So what is the best time for our May seats -- for the first 7 days of the basho? Shouldn't we start signing up for them? Who will do the actual reservation and purchase, and has anything been arranged for he payment?

December is almost gone, and we should book the flight and hotel well in advance too. Time is marching on.

Sumo is present in the TV top 30 rankings of the year 2016, joint 14th with 24%: day 15 of the Hatsu basho with Kotoshogiku's first "Japanese" yusho after 10 years. http://www.sponichi.co.jp/entertainment/news/2016/12/28/kiji/20161228s00041000064000c.html

Edit: in the end sumo dropped to joint 15th, NHK kouhaku year end singing got the top 2 places instead of the 1 placeholder from last year. http://www.nikkansports.com/entertainment/news/1760744.html

Natsu basho tickets were sold out in 87 minutes after the start 10a.m. today. For fans that had waited in front of the kokugikan, at 8a.m. 200 billets to get access to the ticket booth were handed out. Sales on the net go on much faster than at the booth though, there was nothing much left for the 200. Those who didn't get one in spite of the billet got a poster as a present. Some orders get canceled later (e.g. those who later got another better ticket than one from the pre-advance sales), so advance sales go on. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1804516.html

Nagoya-basho advance sales have started already just over an hour ago, no chairs seats left and only a few masu boxes: http://sumo.pia.jp/ticket07.jsp

But we know they will be available till the last day for at least 50% increased prices.

For the start of the Aki-basho advance sales on Aug. 5th, there won't be tickets on sale anymore at the kokugikan ticket booth. Only if there are remaining or cancelled tickets from internet and phone sales etc., the tickets booth sells them on the 7th. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20170525/ddm/035/050/175000c
