Basho attendance

Tickets for the January tournament go on sale this Saturday. I'm going to get seats for 4 or 5 days I think. I'm thinking one day towards the beginning, one around the middle, and then days 13, 14 and 15.

All days an immediate sell-out for Hatsu - I'll post the TV ratings later - but for Haru not all tickets were sold: sales started on the 3rd.

By now most days are sold out and only a few tickets remain http://sumo.pia.jp/vacant/va03.jsp

- the total sellout in the end is not endangered

The last 2 years had sellouts for Osaka on the first day of sales - and Osaka provides only seats for 7414 spectators, less than 75% of the kokugikan capacity. http://www.zakzak.co.jp/spo/news/190206/spo1902060011-n1.html

The TV ratings for Hatsu 19 -  from the Kanto top 30 and Kansai top 20, 2nd half of makuuchi - Sankei west doesn't post the ratings anymore, but I found a blog that does (I added the Kyushu data as well)

The ratings in Kansai were unlike in the past just as good as for Kanto - Takakeisho is THE Kansai local now (Goeido one as well, but ...)

  Hatsu 19

That was the fiercest ticket battle ever so far - in the 10 or so seconds it takes for the complicated login to really reserve the selection for you, the tickets I selected were already gone and with an error display, the page has to be reloaded - each time with a a much reduced availability - about 10 tries in vain for me: the 1 person masu were gone in about 8 minutes - the NSK reported the total sell-out within less than an hour

That and no new scandal for a while - the NSK is putting much effort into PR, and Taka is not taking away popularity from them either now.

The official report is now that in just under than 4 hours all tickets were sold out for the Natsu basho, leaving the about 350 tickets for the day on each day https://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20190406/sum19040617250002-n1.html

The NSK is warning on their site about buying tickets from unofficial sites - they won't take responsibility for any trouble resulting of it - implying that they might deny entry, according to the spectating contract

http://www.sumo.or.jp/IrohaKyokaiInformation/detail?id=231

The NSK is offering a resale service on the sumo.pia site, the available tickets appear on the specific seat pages, e.g. at the moment 5 A-seat tickets for day 2 are available  http://sumo.pia.jp/resale/purchase/detail.do?param=p1sxxgsQavAMJT6sz_9grw**-aktqRWZqS2o0U3pOSVdMSw**&rbPageType=ticket&rb_rlsCd=002&rb_eventCd=1901909

and they were gone in a few minutes/seconds

That was totally crazy. I was able to load the first time at 10:00:01 and nearly all the categories were still circle. I had to reload at 10:00:05 and nearly half of the categories by day had turned to X.

I was able to get a day 9 two person B masu at 10:01:15.

Total sellout in an hour but any real choice was gone in 10 minutes.

All days officially a sell-out - except that on day 15 a lot of tickets were not on sale in the first place: in the end about 100 for Trump&Co on the shomen side, but likely some more on adjacent sides, and only 180 tickets for the day made available. Still - in the absence of proper information - the same standard sell-out number of 10936 was reported.

From the unquotables:

Quote

Trump made senshuraku have high TV ratings of 26.3% (Kansai 24.9) - as usual for the 2nd half of makuuchi - even the 1st half had a quite high 15.9%.

And the peek was - also highly unusual - at the yusho cup presentation: Trump on the dohyo had 30.6% (Kansai 30.0%)

The TV ratings for the Natsu basho from the Kanto top 30 and Kansai top 20, 2nd half of makuuchi - for the last week no data from Sankei, so also for Kanto the top 20 for this.

You'd think more people would be watching due to being unable to attend, but it looks worse than usual.

What difference could 8,000-odd people possibly make to TV ratings in a country of 126 million? Even if compared just to the 22 or so million in the Kansai region it's a drop in the bucket.

The basho was seen as a potentially good opportunity as far as TV ratings are concerned because people may have fewer things to do in general right now (especially kids), but the would-be live audience being unable to attend was always going to be irrelevant for that.

Yes, but (assuming im reading the tables right) everyday of recent bashos has been in the top 20, whereas this one where a lot more people should be staying home and watching has half the days not even reach that.

The people who are home now and the people who are home usually to watch sumo are not the same people.   Also, I would guess that the absolute ratings are up (which wasn't in the data shown), even if the share and rank are both down.

They still thought (3 days ago) about how to have Natsu not just another empty basho - no schedule for advance ticket sales yet, but the much bigger kokugikan will have a much bigger loss than  Haru and the rikishi will have even less motivation. The NSK has experts to check the possible measures. http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGKKZO57192680U0A320C2UU8000/

This Haru basho will earn the NSK about 1 billion yen less than last year's.

That's what I would have thought, I expected higher ratings than usual- but judging by what's happening here, many people may be watching pandemic-related news at all hours of the day. It would be interesting to see if other TV programmes have also seen a decline in ratings, or if it was the dismal silence that made the heads turn away.
