Ceremonial dohyo-iri

Recommended Posts

Do the yokozuna and entourage get some sort of appearance fee or free transport & lodging for such ceremonies?

am wondering why there hasn't been a queue for Kisenosato to perform at various shrines and temples yet.

People who had hoped to see Takayasu were disappointed: no more, already ozeki, now Okinoumi as tachi-mochi. Shohozan still and Hokutofuji as tsuyu-harai at the dohyo-iri of Kise at the Kashima shrine (Ibaraki). About 25 000 people were there, around 10 000 more than 2 years ago by Hakuho.

Or will we see these 2 as the new attendants for Kise?

Another dohyo-iri today for the opening of the new dohyo at the new Yamahibiki-beya, with Ura as tachi-mochi and Tokushoryu as tsuyu-harai

Does the choice of tachi-mochi and tsuyu-harai  always have to follow the banzuke? I always thought it's the two highest ranked Sekitori from the heya or if there are none from the ichimon?  I didn't know Ozeki where excluded from that duty/honour...

I don't like his dohyo-iri. It's somewhat 'unsmooth' and at some points he looks like a couch potato trying that birthday gift aerobics video for the first time. And it didn't get better since his dohyo-iri-deflowering...

Truncated?

I wonder if it has evolved since its debut or has the injury affected his posture?

I like Harumafuji's dohyo-iri much better than any other Yoks. He seems to take it much more seriously and the feet shuffling part is just a joy to watch.

And yes, Kisenosato's postures and movements are somehow less....graceful/dignified? Case of lack of experience?

I don't know what you want to say with truncated.

He did his first dohyo-iri (plural) before the injury, so maybe it plays a role for the dohyo-iri not getting smoother. Two examples: When stretching out his arms, his body is upright and his arms stretched to the max, like he is doing what we call a Hampelmann in german. And there is the stand-up-shuffle d_golem mentions. Just horrible to watch, compared to the others.

I would not call it less graceful/dignified, it's just not elegant and it lacks power. I hope it is only a matter of time, it's still new to him. Especially Hakuho had a long time to make his d-i look so smooth and powerful.

Earliest toob video of Hakuho dohyo-iri, uploaded 16 Jan 2008, so at most he's been Yokozuna a little over half a year. After watching this, I think the best way to describe Kisenosato's is : no sense of theatre. Or : very limited showmanship. Or perhaps : channel some WWE spirit, dude!

Anyone able to do a side-by-side comparison with Kakuryu, who is also Unryu style?

IIRC, Doreen said it's called seri-agari in Japanese. He seems fine on the dohyo, but on the stone at the shrine it is not quite as sharp. I suspect it may have something to do with that surface, and perhaps his lack of experience performing a yokozuna dohyo-iri on it as well.

Just noticed that it´s Hokutofuji as tsuyu-harai in these pics and no longer Shohozan. By the way: thx so much for adding so much Information and pix to this Forum (invaluable to all of us who are unable to read/speak Japanese)!

Excluded for normal duty, but for special occasions even other yokozuna serve as attendants. Takayasu will be doing it again on the 11th for the dohyo-iri at the remains of the house where Ibaraki-shusshin 19th yokozuna Hitachiyama was born.  http://mainichi.jp/articles/20170607/ddl/k08/050/136000c

And thanks for spotting Hokutofuji - I hadn't watched the video and large pics yet. The Ibaraki shimbun video above is viewable again.

This time Shohozan was back to the dohyo-iri team - as tachi-mochi - and Kagayaki was tsuyu-harai: Kise is having a try with all eligible ichimon-members, so it seems. Shohozan will surely not be tachi-mochi for the basho - he's dropping too low for Nagoya.

The traditional Atsuta-shrine dohyo-iri for the 60th Nagayo-basho had the most spectators ever - about 8000 came to see 4 yokozuna - last time in 1999 - but of course especially Kisenosato. Last year it were 5000.
