As for who goes down I think only Takanoyama and Hochiyama will. If Kyokotenho retires and Kakuryu clears a Meagashira spot 4 juryo candidates are needed and not so easily found except Chiyotairyu. Both J4 may have a chance to go up. J1-3 have to do at least KK to go, lets see who manages. I guess J7 is too low.

So Ikioi and Takarfuji may be saved.

That's not how it works; makuuchi is fixed at 42 rikishi in total. Kakuryu's promotion would strip away the M16w rank.

Not with the 12-3 Kimikaze could still achieve. 11-4 for him and Masunoyama could work as well if the demotable records are bad enough.

Chiyonokuni could be in danger of dropping if all others save themselves.

Okay, my Japanese is no better than yours but I had my wife who is Japanese (but not familiar with sumo) listen to this. She says that at first they thought the winner had pulled the mage but they determined that either he did not pull it or that it did not affect the outcome of the match. I think the first explanation would be more reasonable but it sure looked like the mage was pulled to me....

From what I heard "but the east side rikishi did not hold the mage" so the decision is upheld. Since this is a good opportunity to practice my Japanese, here's the transcription of what I heard. Part in quotation marks is the one I'm not sure I heard correctly:

Gyouji gumbai wa higashigata rikishi ni agemashita ga, higashigata rikishi ga nishigata rikishi no mage "wo ippate n" dewanai koto, kyougi shita kekka: mage ni te wo kakate orazu, gunbai doori, higashigata rikishi no kachi wo itashimasu.

Gyoji raised his gunbai to the east side rikishi, but (there was a question whether?) east-side rikishi (pulled?) west-side's rikishi mage. Here is the result of the discussion: since he didn't pull the mage, gunbai doori, it's east-side rikishi's win.

I love it how shinpan-buchou uses east-side and west-side rikishi since he doesn't know the names of the rikishi, and doesn't have the cheat-sheet like gyoji and yobidashi...

In this case, the shimpan spoke in a very clear manner, usually the explanations sound more bossy-comfortable-mumblier

I don't think I've ever see Kise blast out of the cannon like that before. Was his tachi-ai that good? Or was Baruto just a lot slower?

And as much as I'd love Kak to take this one, Goeido is having a great time. Possibility of an upset?

I would suggest you go back and watch the vid on that one. Kisenosato's right hand was about a foot above the clay when he launched into an unready Baruto. He pulled a similar stunt against Kakuryu. The difference in that bout was the opposite hand. Both instances involved the "matta" being on the blind side of the head shimpan.

What an exciting couple of weeks it's been, right up to the point where the ring of rikishi were throwing that gentleman up in the air, something i really wasn't expecting and will eagerly find out what that was all about soon hopefully :)

As a Hakuho fan the last bout ended as i would have hoped, he better have a big garage as that was a lot of trophies! but also an amazing effort by soon-to-be Ozeki kakuryo, thank you kintamayama for the last two weeks of excellent humour, education and entertainment, it really is a pleasure every time i see a new compilation :)

As always i am left a little sad at the end of the basho, you may laugh but since i've discovered sumo a new cycle has been introduced into my life which was not there before, i've never eagerly waited so much for any event that happens once every couple of months, here's to the next basho! (Kensho parade...)

I rarely post anything, but I also want to thank kintamayama and araibira! Araibira, because now I can finally see how my adoptees are doing (and all the other interesting rikishis below Juryo), I actually never thought anyone would ever upload so many bouts from makushita or below.
