So, was Harumafuji out or not?

Recommended Posts

Since nobody is bringing it up-I'm pretty sure Harumafuji's foot was out when he was pushed back by Wakakouyuu. Bad angle, even for the shimpan, but it sure looked to me that he was out. Did NHK mention this, or anyone else?

I don't know but from the (non-)reaction of the shinpan I thought the foot was on the tawara, but didn't touch the ground beyond it. Seems unlikely to me that nobody even considered it since it wasn't exactly sneaky (that happens) but quite obvious.

I've watched it maybe a hundred times (maybe, 15 times is closer to the truth..) and I am convinced he was out. He stepped out in a blind spot where no shimpan could get a really good look (except the one sitting about two feet from it, but must have dozed off..). The picture I posted doesn't show it-if you watch the video, it looks like there is a pretty good chance they missed this. He was definitely over and above the tawara - question is, if the heel touched outside.

Ah come on man don't tell me he left the tournament with an injury, he has been demolishing everyone

You misunderstood. I meant out of the ring, not out of the tournament.

Not sure what blind spot you are talking about as the shimpan had full view, Tawara two step I believe.

I addressed that already in the original.. Still looks out to me for a brief second there.

Looking through the usual websites, there is no mention of this, so I guess the case is closed.

Or is it..

There'd have been a mark in the janome had the outside edge of his foot or his heel had touched down outside the ring. The shimpan would have spotted that, and he appears to be positioned well to see it if it happened.

Can't see the umbrella from here, but I guess the shimpan can. Anyway, at the end they both step all over the umbrella, tampering with the evidence if it was there at all.

I withdraw my monoii.

Mostly.

After seeing your video, Moti: I think it is as likely that he didn't step out.

But great video, huh??

It wasn't out, according to me. You see the shadow of the foot over the tawara and if it was outside you wouldn't, I guess.

When I saw the video for the first time, I was absolutely certain he stepped out. But I guess its up for debate. Another gyoji might have stopped the match right there.

Or a shimpan would call a monoii "for confirmation" (Takanohana jargon), as they do lately.

Frame-by-frame, it looks like he stayed on top of the tawara, so, no call. And yeah, the evidence was demolished when they both went out that same door.

Now, had it been someone like Baruto, with a much bigger foot, there'd be no contest.

And considering this "operational procedure" he had on his butt, he's kicking some a$$ (pun intended).
