The sekitori listed below will be absent from the Natsu Unbasho on day 1.

Technically, none of them are "sekitori"

East Jonokuchi 9 Fukushima

I could see why he's sitting this one out...

I almost didn't bother. Anyone want to sort out who is gone from those who is absent, be my guest (this is from the kyujo list on the NSK site). Typo corrections always welcome.

I'm curious how many of them are in fact retired...

Especially since none of the sekitori are on the kyujo list.

Is there any chance to see again Hokutoriki on a dohyo ... ?

Just 47? Much fewer than I expected given all the youngsters who supposedly lost their spirits because of the long break, according to the press anyway...

According to my stats, Hokutoriki has dropped 33 ranks since the November 2010 banzuke was released and last got double-digit wins in September '09 (I am not worthy...) .

Hokutoriki is 34 yrs old and dropping like a rock. Expect an intai coming out of this basho.

Well, it's not like we have no explanation for it; he missed two full tournaments with injury. Anybody's going to drop 25+ ranks with that.

Watching live, we just saw an un-Asabenkei. Makushita 54 did not show up.

Too bad about Hokutoriki. I didn't particularly like him as a rikishi, but I used to love watching him loose.

I was half-asleep at the time and I haven't rewatched the bout yet, but Ms51e Tokachiumi got dropped awkwardly by Ryuonami in their bout and was unable to flex his (left, IIRC) elbow as he left the dohyo. Not sure how severe it'll turn out to be, but didn't look pretty.

They were fusen (did not appear) on day 5, not kyujo (NSK's kyujo list). They're not on the kyujo list or the schedule for day 6 either. If they are withdrawing, I'd expect to see it for day 7.

Whatever, they didn't show up for their matches. This thread is called "Absent/Withdraw", I just thought I'd mention it for those who may have missed it.

Sure it's just semantics, but the point is that you can miss a match and receive a fusenpai without subsequently withdrawing from the tournament. "They withdrew on Day 5" implied that Takanoiwa and Meigetsuin weren't on the Day 5/6 schedule altogether.

Day 7

Two return, two withdraw:

Returning (rather, just now starting)

East Sandanme 46 Teruazuma

West Jonokuchi 20 Miyakofuji

Withdrawing (fusenpai their previous matches):

Makushita 15TD Meigetsuin (0-3)

Makushita 30 Takanoiwa (1-2)

I recall mention here a few years back where a lower division rikishi missed his match because he went to the wrong side (east/west) to go to the dohyo. By the time he got to where he was supposed to be, his match had been called and the default win awarded to his opponent. Wasn't there also someone (within the last 5 years or so) who missed their bus or got on the wrong bus or something like that?

Too bad for the one who missed the bus and didn't call the kyokai... (Applauding...)

Last year Ichifuji was late (maybe a few others) because of a train delay and the match was rescheduled a bit later in the same division.

Takanoiwa has an ankle injury (unless I misunderstood him) That's too bad!!

Miyakofuji came back to not fall off the banzuke. He had surgery a few basho ago. I am not sure he'll withdraw again now or not but plans to be 100% for action in Nagoya!!! (Applauding...)

I wonder if Ryuho is going to call it quits after the basho. He's withdrawing upon falling to MK (no injury in that bout, it was a fumidashi loss), and his stable was just gutted of four fellow sekitori before the basho, might be enough for him to call it a day. (In love...)
