Retiree

Recommended Posts

Sadly I guessed (check the thread from January) that Futenou would retire this year. I don't know if his oyakata took away his computer privileges or what but he hasn't blogged since the last day of the basho in May which is very telling. I can't imagine him struggling in makushita for long after his turn in maku no uchi. I kept hoping for a resurgence but it just doesn't seem realistic at this point.

And I (vigorously) disagreed. (Applauding...) Oops. If this is really the end of the road, I hope at some point we'll find out what has gone so catastrophically wrong with him. 30-year-old rikishi just don't disintegrate so completely and so quickly, especially ones who don't have the wear and tear from having started professionally at age 15.

Well, still four bouts left this basho. We'll see..

Here is a very sad story from a local edition of the Mainichi. When Jonidan rikishi Takamine of Mcihinoku Beya told his father in late August that he intended to quit Ozumo, the older man totally lost his cool and set his own house on fire. The structure was completely destroyed along with a good portion of the adjoining houses.

The story gets worse. In the burnt-out rubble, fire-fighters found the remains of a young girl--Takamine's 11-year-old sister. There were six people in the house at the time of the fire. The parents and the older children managed to escape and the eldest son called the fire department. The little girl was actually out of the building at one point but returned to rescue the family's pet cat.

Takamine understandably is currently kyujo from Aki Basho.

Wow, that's....wow. With a mind that fragile it was likely to snap at some point, but to happen under such circumstances and have such consequences. A heavy toll. (Applauding...)

Rumour has it that, if Futeno is not getting kachikoshi this basho he will retire.

No kachi-koshi, sadly - he's finished on 3-4. Incredibly, he hasn't had a kachi-koshi in two years.

Sadly he already started this basho below his college level makushita entry point in 2003 hatsubasho so it would be difficult to imagine Futenou continuing to fall lower than where he began. He rose to komusubi so quickly but then became inconsistent. His last KK was an 11-4 from M10W and yet he hasn't had one since.

I'd say he has always been inconsistent. The Komusubi promotion was some kind of fluke in my opinion with a 11-4 at M10 (a feat he could only repeat once, three years later) followed by a 10-5 at M3 which included two fusensho. Apart from that one win against Asashoryu, his merits weren't exactly stellar.

Kiriyama beya's Hayasegawa had his last match yesterday as well. He seems to have now lost more weight since Osaka and about half of his old self really! I really miss his shokkiri with Kongofuji! (In a state of confusion...) With the new rule of not being allowed in the first floor without a first floor ticket there was nobody to hand him flowers or congratulate him on his retirement, it seemed so sad!

You mean they don't let Clunky Shoes downstairs now, either? She always brought a bouquest for anyone who retired.

No Clunky Shoes... she buys the 15 day booklets so no chance to get there! She spends a good part of the day in the halls. I have to say that it was nice she always brought flowers to the boys who retired!
