Akebono vs Sapp - tonite.

Recommended Posts

For K1 fans tonight is the night that Bobb (Sign of disapproval) Sapp takes on Akebono. 9pm Japan time on normal TV so I'll let you know what happens.

Don't think it is worth a poll but if, as locals believe, a deal has been made to 'not go after Akebono's knees' it could be more interesting than a simple 'on paper' analysis would have you believe with Akebono's reach playing a part.

Personally hope he (Akebono) whoops the degrading fool that is Sapp. Entertainment is fine - portraying racial and national stereotypes to such an extent as he does is insulting to all black, foreign or both people in Japan and once he's made his yen he'll be gone leaving the rest to deal with the usual 'can you eat rice' / sushi? idiots that Sapp only encourages. (Censored)

Come on AKEBONO! (Applauding...) :-D (Applauding...) (Clapping wildly...)

Mada, mada,

Show started but Akebono is being supported by Takanohana at ringside and Mike Tyson is commentating with his daft face tattoo in Hawaii. Claimed he saw a black rikishi named 'Yabo??' in a similar fight and get whooped.

Anyone know Yabo?

i found this forecast-vote

i guess the first option means sapp ko-ing akebono in the first round...

and this gets the majority vote form roughly 1/3 of the voters....

that is not my guess, but i cannot think of a way akebono knocking out sapp

●サップの1RKO勝ち

1302 (35.2%)

●サップの2RKO勝ち

743 (20.1%)

●曙の1RKO勝ち

501 (13.6%)

●両者、決め手なく判定

Still the warm-ups but at least that saves us from analysis by Tyson.

Kokkai is front row too if anyone is interested in his New Year keiko techniques.

(actually, can see him considering K-1 post sumo)

ANR :-D

On the post above to - I'll go for a KO (2nd) by Akebono but that is purely my heart and not my head speaking.

Ofcourse Sapp had to wear a face-mask and all that hannibal stuff. How else would he stand any chance against Akebono in a stare down?

No one stands a chance against Akebono in a stare down, mask or no mask! :-D

All the warm-ups Tumpii. You know what it's like before a big event - - 300 TV commercials, fights between people you haven't heard of and don't want to see anyway and of course a local cutesy with an IQ similar to her shoe size trying to offer serious commentary.

Same anywhere

Patience.

Ok, apparently they know how to torture people over there as well. (Clapping wildly...) At least the time here is only 3.25PM so I'll find out today!

Damn I wish I'd have that channel.. :-D

Sapp won just before the end of the 1st round.

3rd knockdown but I think the second was waved away. Biy of a glass jaw on Akebono it appeared although he did well to smother Sapp early on. Akebono looked in a bad way at the end - doctors etc.

All of it followed a crucifixion in my own opinion of the US national anthem by Stevie Wonder - on harmonica!

There you have it.

ANR :-D

Also, forgot - if anyone is interested in Akebono's appearance - well trimmed goatee and curly blond hair atop a body I'd say that has slimmed down a fair bit.

Shorts called him 'Yokozuna' too.

ANR :-D

Nooo, damn.. Not in the first round!!! They could at least have made a deal with Sapp not to knock each other out that early. :-D

Maybe Akebono will do the wise thing now and retire-

Take up knitting or something.

Good point Fujisan - hurt me to see his wife and kids looking scared in the audience - before the fight started!

Knitting methinks.

I didn't see the match, but from the beginning I just didn't think Ake had any business in the ring with Sapp. 2 months to train isn't anywhere enough. If his first match had been against a nobody who he could easily beat just to give him a little ring experience and then taking 6 months before training for a Sapp fight, maybe he could have gone out without being embarressed --humiliating all of Sumo IMHO in the process.

He would be better off knitting. I really hope he does retire cause with his knees he'd make a better jockey than a K-1 fighter.

He gets a lot of shit now and career advices suggesting knitting and stupid stuff like that. I'd say he did ok though. With no defensive skills and no background in boxing or kicking sports he did manage to put pressure on Sapp who is quite a monster himself and while not tecnhical, lightyears more experienced in this kind of fighting than Akebono was. Akebono may be stupid and delusional to think he can do boxing/kicking without having any other sumo strength and skill working in his favour than tsuppari kind of attack (which I guess he used during his strong moments in the match?). Almost like Mike Tyson doing sumo. All tools taken away other than perhaps some vicious harite.

Clown or not, Sapp completely killed that renowned Ernesto guy twice and despite he having a weak midsection in punch receiving department and gorillla kind of skill level, he is still a guy who can make pulp out of anyone. Calling Sapp a joke is a bit strange in this light. He too has to fight with limited tools as he could easily crush these 100kg guys if he was allowed to shove and wrestle. Best K1-fighters are at the top because of high endurance towards punches. Sapp and Akebono can have very mediocre punch taking ability like thousands of boxers/kickboxers/etc. but since they have the strength department at much higher level than K1-top fighters, they compete against these skilled and experienced martial artists who then make them look very pathetic occasionally when their defense fails completely but on the other hand sometimes lose 100-0 when their strength surprises the skilled guys.

Embarrassment for Akebono?

Not in my opinion. Decent performance.

It will be interesting to see the knock-out punches though. Were there any glass breaking sounds? :-P

Life is life. 2004 comes.

Perhaps my post was not the most objective post in the world. I can't say that Akebono made a a bad career move. Who else can go from middle class to millionaire in 3 minutes? And yes, considering his limited training and lack of experience its hard to say he did bad. But its hard to say he did good too, he did not make it out of the first round.

It just hurts to see a person considered a hero by so many to go down like that. Akebono is an icon in the sumo world, particularly to non-Japanese. We all wanted to see him win or at least make a good showing. But he was in over his head.

Sumo's popularity in Japan has been dwinding. The young generation is watching stuff like the high paced K-1 instead of Sumo. If the Sumo wrestler could have gone in and defeated the K-1 man or at least roughed him up, the kids would have looked at Sumo in a new light. They would have learned to respect rikishi in a new way. But this fight did just the opposite. This just reinforces their belief that Sumo is a dying sport of unathletic not-so-tough guys.

Oh god I'd love to see Asashoryu or Chiyotaikai step into the ring with Sapp and completely kick his @$* :-P

Could be Emanuel Yarbrough, the heaviest Sumotori ever.

Another K-1 question:

Is there only ONE K-1 referee period? I have watched a bit of K-1 on Eurosport of late and have seen matches from various places and between various fighters and it seems EVERY ONE of those matches have one and the same referee (the same that can be seen on the Akebono-Sapp pictures in another thread). IS there only one on that circuit? :-) :-P

There are several, but it's usually the same guy that judges the big events.
