Banzuke in the making (i guess)

Recommended Posts

from the aki basho programs i scanned two pictures showing the making o f new banzuke (i hope this is not a torikumi-session) :-D

here is the first picture showing all sitting around a long strip of paper

banzukemakingsession

the picture is rather big (440kb) to give the experts here a chance to see some details

second shows smaller strips with names written on them and erasesed again.....should have been a lively session

corrections

Very interesting pictures! Thanks for sharing them! :-S

Indeed fascinating... I think I now know why the banzuke is often so quirky... too many cooks spoil the banzuke! :-) Perhaps a 5-man committee would be more effective than this grand carnival session of everybody and their grandmother... :-D At least I don't spot any sake cups anywhere (Blushing...)

Cheers

The Banzuke is from Hatsu 2002.

The Makuuchi Banzuke (the one laid out diagonally) actually did not have any corrections.

The Makushita Banzuke had lots of corrections.

Like it makes that much of a difference if the quirkyness comes due to a 3-2 split decision or a 15-12 decision? ;-)

Very interesting pictures indeed. :-) Can somebody identify any of the men in the first picture?

My guess is that they are all oyakata... (Laughing...)

Only one I can positively identify is Futagoyama-oyakata (looking at us), to the right of the man sitting in the centre and arranging one strip of paper.

The leftmost one of those seated in chairs looks dauntingly familiar, too...

Not so much with the voting, but with the suggesting... "I think Toki should be Sekiwake".... "Fine, but I think Wakanosato should remain Sekiwake"... "Fool! Tamanoshima and Tochinonada should be Sekiwake!" ... "No way! Tochinonada stays at M1e"... "Imbecile! That's where Wakanosato goes!" etc etc.

Manekineko seems to be right. They are a whole bunch of oyakata...

Futagoyama is easily recognized and so is Hakkaku (ex-Hokutoumi) sitting at the far left.

Most others are a bit harder to recognize, at least for me, without checking photos of them (and probably hard even then).

Anyway, the guy whose face is very visible on the middle in the left row (from where we stand), smiling, looking over the banzukeline, is ex-Fujizakura. Darned if I remember his name as oyakata... The one beside him, farther away, looks like Matsugane-oyakata (ex-Wakashimadzu), and I'm sure I recognize the one on this side of Fujizakura as well (Oitekaze? ), but am unsure of the name.

The guy in the same row, farthest away from the camera, looks very much like Mihogaseki-oyakata (ex-Masuiyama), and the one sitting at the table behind him looks like ex-Futatsuryu (but that I'm quit uncertain of...). Finally, Asahiyama-oyakata is just visible on the opposite side of Mihogaseki-oyakata.

That's about what I can even venture a guess on...

EDIT: Maybe, just maybe, the guy right opposite Fujizakura is Naruto-oyakata (ex-Takanosato). No money on that one though... Another maybe: Could the guy between Matsugane and Mihogaseki possibly be Kokonoe-oyakata?

cold pictures -- thanks for posting them (Laughing...) Is there an official name to the group within the NSK that makes up the banzuke?

The guy second from the back in the left row (side of head only) could be Kokonoe (Chiyonofuji)

Among the four men sitting at the table in the back, could the one on the right (from our point of view) be Tatsunami (ex-Asahiyutaka)?

It doesn't look like him to me, but it's not so easy to see. Tatsunami looks very young on photos, so I suppose it's possible...

Btw, isn't it Araiso-oyakata with that very obviously grey/white hair? Maybe he's the guy behind Asahiyama?

And the next one in that line looks a bit like ex-Kitaseumi, but again, whatever his oyakata-name is, I have no idea...

And could the third guy from the camera on the left line, be Idzutsu, ex-Sakahoko?.

And could I have taken this issue a bit too seriously (Laughing...)

These I have on the glossary but several people might already have corrected them. I'm just so slow to update the glossary. I attempt to do a big update on the whole site sometime between Christmas and New Year, I guess.

banzuke hensei iinkai, see banzuke hensei kaigi

banzuke hensei kaigi, banzuke deciding kyokai committee (and its meetings)

banzuke hensei yakuinkai, see banzuke hensei kaigi

Well, it's name is written in bold font under the picture: 番付編成会議, banzuke hensei kaigi. I guess iinkai and yakuinkai are more or less synonyms, or those might be more condensed sessions with fewer members? (kaigi = meeting. conference, convention, iinkai = committee meeting, yakuinkai = board meeting)
