Mongolian jungyo under way

Recommended Posts

The boys are on their way to Mongolia. Kyokutenhou did not take the bus to the airport with everyone else. He stayed at a hotel near Narita one night before the flight. "It's taken 17 years..(since he joined). I'd like to show everyone how to make an oicho and many other aspects of sumo. I am eagerly awaiting doing keiko with kids", he said. "I'd like to tell them about the difficult side of sumo, so that if anyone wants to join Sumo, he won't be doing it only for the money", he added.

The contingent includes all Mongolian rikishi from all divisions. "The Olympics are over, and now the 'Mongolian Olympics' will commence. Sports are a hot topic these days, so I'd like this to be a successful jungyo. I'd like to cause excitement!", said Asashouryuu at the airport. The Yokozuna and Ozeki are slated to meet the President of Mongolia tomorrow. The tournament will be held on the 27th and 28th of August.

They left in two teams-one with Asashouryuu, Kotooushuu and KaioU at the head (direct flight), and the other with the others (via Seoul).

Excitement:

Plane number one has arrived safely in Mongolia. Ceremony on the tarmac, wind orchestra, fans clapping, Mayor hands out flowers. "Gee.. I'm happy. I'm thankful. I'm really tense about the dohyo-iri. It's not only about the Sumo, I'd like the people to see many other (aspects of sumo) things", said Asashouryuu.

The second party's plane has been delayed for many hours, it seems. Hakuhou, Kotomitsuki, Chiyotaikai and others will be arriving very late today. The reason for the delay is bad weather in Mongolia.

Team B has still not arrived in Mongolia. They spent the night in a hotel in Seoul. The Mongolians had plans to meet relatives and stuff-all down the drain. Now, they will be quite stressed, as there will be almost no time for pleasure.

Asashouryuu did not pass through passport control. They are calling him "the man with a face as a passport" now, seriously..

Kotomitsuki will not be flying into Mongolia for now. During the stopover in Seoul, he got acute appendicitis and has been hospitalized and received treatment. He apparently started feeling very bad to an extent that they couldn't fly him back to Japan, but after receiving medication, he felt better. No decision on surgery or when he will be returning to Japan.

Team B (Hakuhou, Chiyotaikai etc..) has still not arrived in Mongolia. They spent the night in a hotel in Seoul. The Mongolians had plans to meet relatives and stuff-all down the drain. Now, they will be quite stressed, as there will be almost no time for pleasure.

The first group's top brass met with the Mongolian President today for half an hour. "Thank you for bringing the jungyo to Mongolia. I am happy the citizens will be able to watch sumo at the core!!", enthused the President. "From children to old people, everyone regards you as celebrities!!", added the Mayor. Ooshima Oyakata who was the first to bring Mongolian rikishi to Japan, is the head of the jungyo. "I am deeply moved to be able to lead this delegation!", he said.

Team B has finally arrived in Mongolia, totally exhausted. The guys arrived at their lodgings at 10 PM. "Man, I'm tired!", sad Hakuhou."It took a long time..", added Tokitenkuu. A few more hours of delay and they would have arrived straight for the tournament.

Asa really is the master of the universe, he even can dictate the weather in Mongolia ;-)

Think he enjoyed all the attention for him to the full :-D.

When they send the sumotori somewhere, I understand that they never all travel on the one plane just in case it goes down with all on board.

Does anyone happen to know how they decide who goes on each plane? Is it east and west? .

In 2001 for the amasumo world championships they sent all the japanese on one plane and all the foreigners on another.

Look out for Katrina at the Jugyo in amongst the Mongol hoards.

Team B tried to put on a happy face for those that came to greet them, but it was obvious they were tired and annoyed. The Mongolian rikishi who planned on visiting their family had to cancel that. They were on the road for 33 hours, and some of them complained that they wasted a lot of money during their forced stay in Seoul on shopping and a casino. "I was reading, I went to a casino", said Takamisakari when asked how he passed the time. They will have less than 14 hours of rest before they set off to the circus stadium, and fears were voiced that some rikishi may get injured as their bodies are tired..

A tired Hakuhou goes through the motions before retiring to his room:

Mongolian finger food = bones out of the presssure cooker (cooked in what the rest of the world would call 'milk churns'); gourmet finger food = bones with a generous amount of meat on them.

Orion, happily reminiscing

Hakuhou won day 1 ( a prize for the hardships these last few days?). He beat Tokitenkuu, another group B survivor, in the finals with shitatenage.Asashouryuu lost to stablemate Asasekiryuu by tsukiotoshi in the quarterfinals. The semifinals were comprised of (surprise, surprise..) 4 Mongolian rikishi. 36 Makuuchi rikishi in all + 19 Makushita and under Mongolian rikishi, who were all introduced in a dohyo iri to the public.

KaioU is one of the most popular rikishi in Mongolia right now, Mongolian rikishi notwithstanding. Girls were screaming his name yesterday, and saying he has the face Mongolian women love. "This mug??", he was heard saying. Everywhere he goes, throngs follow him. "Why me??", he scratches his head.

U with my future wife and other members of the media:

Tokitenkuu : "We were supposed to arrive by plane like thiiiis two days ago, but finally we walked all the way.."

Dohyo-iri:

Hakuhou: "Again the gyoji who keeps asking what a Scotsman has under his kilt.. I wouldn't mind, but the gunbai is so cold.."

Some new contents on the sumo-webpaper.

My special sports reporter (I am not worthy...) Enkhbat Batmunkh (former Kykutenzan) made some pics from the jungyo backstage and on the dohyo.

See them here: Mongolian jungyo
