Gurowake 4,154 Posted October 30 I was wondering why in the world that a Japanese club would be called "Avispa", as that doesn't mean anything in English, so why go with a name that has multiple problems with fitting into Japanese phonology? Apparently, it's because it's the Spanish word for wasp. Their Wikipedia article doesn't indicate *why* they chose the Spanish word for wasp, just that they did. Most J-League clubs' names are either horrible portmanteaus or single words from an assortment of European languages. Italian and German seem to be favourites, but you see the odd English, French, Spanish and Portuguese popping up. Cerezo Osaka - Spanish for cherry Júbilo Iwata - Portuguese for rejoicing (joy) Vissel Kobe - VIctory + veSSEL Blaublitz Akita - German forum members will know that one Montedio Yamagata - Italian for mountain + God Etc etc. Some of them even mix languages.
