So they left all 9-4 guys with a chance. Very original torikumi-making. Kotoshouhou and Aonishiki need to lose tomorrow. If they get paired on day 15 that's that, but if they continue to not pair them against each other the current 4 loss guys are still in the race .

I would think they'd do whatever is needed for day 15 scheduling to avoid a giant 11-4 playoff, if that's still a possibility then.

I am sure Aonishiki - Kotoshoho on senshuraku is already set in stone. There is just no reason for it to not happen.

An 11-4 yusho would be embarrassing for NSK, why wouldn't they try to avoid it?

They could have avoided it already tomorrow easily. A five way playoff is much more more.

Again, they could have done it tomorrow. Why wait for senshuraku? They want a giant playoff.

It would shock me immensely if they don't do the senshuraku torikumi such that at least one 12-3 record is assured, even if Kotoshoho and Aonishiki both lose tomorrow.

Incidentally, Aonishiki - Atamifuji and Kotoshoho - Atamifuji could be other possible 11-3 vs 11-3 pairings (needs Atamifuji to win on Day 14, of course). Either way, it would take deliberate intent to make a yusho score of 11-4 possible, and there's zero history of the shimpan committee leaning in that direction.

History means zero lately, as Takayasu may attest to.. All Im saying is they could have avoided all the speculation by pitting Aonishiki against Kotoshouhou tomorrow. Thats all it took to negate any chance of an 11-4 yusho. But they didnt. Im just doing some wishful thinking, and that wish so far is  alive when it could have died tomorrow. The focus is on a 5 man playoff, not on  the 11-4 record.

Whether its a 12-3 or 11-4 , a lot of young hopefuls have shined this Basho , the future does indeed look bright.

A 5-way is theoretically impossible with the remaining bouts. At least one of Aonishiki and Kotoshoho will reach 12 wins if they fight on senshuraku.

I'm also trying to make sense of Sir Golden Balls, but fail miserably.

OK, a four way playoff. Semanthics. Anyhow, if you read the original, i said it will happen if they dont match the current leaders at all.

Maybe they want a spectacular senshuraku finish? 2 leaders fighting for the yusho?

I still don't see the downside of delaying Aonishiki - Kotoshoho till senshuraku.

I think that's it—they didn't want to take the tension out of the race with the winner possibly clinching on day 14.

But why would they avoid scheduling Aonishiki - Kotoshoho at all (if this is what you mean)?

Give me one likely reason.

Exactly. If they had made the match on day 14 the winner would take the yusho regardless of whatever else happened. And day 15 would have been a big fat anticlimax like we had in May.

So what? They'd still be at least tied for the lead, and fight for at least a spot in a playoff.

Regardless? The day 14 winner would have to win on senshuraku as well. Great day 15 if he loses.

Yup, you are right. The loser of the match would be only one win behind, and both Atamifujji and Kusano could still be in contention... It's late.

WHY WOULD THEY WANT A HUGE PLAYOFF? To make NHK run their broadcast for extra 30 minutes? Old people want their news.

Maybe they see doing it this way as a win-win-win.

  • If both win, then day 15 is straight-up for the yusho.
  • If only one wins, then he still has to beat the guy who's been running with him all the way to secure the yusho, plus everyone who gets to 11 wins on day 14 still has a chance.
  • If they both lose on day 14, then everyone at 11-3 has a shot. If they fought on day 14, then whoever won would be the only one with his fate in his own hands. And it's more spectator-friendly in general to have a situation where guys need to win to take the championship or make a playoff, as opposed to not lose.

As a wise man once said, much excite.

To me it looks like an old (and very good looking) man yelling at klutzes.

Attention, hype, spectacle, excitement, call it what you will.
