Kensho Hatsu 2025

Recommended Posts

The city of Matsudo (heya location and birthplace of Kotozakura) had called for donations (via the tourist office) to place kensho on the local ozeki on yokozuna run https://www.city.matsudo.chiba.jp/kurashi/kyouiku_sports/suports/kotozakura.html

- design with Sakura, the city tree, and the tourist attraction yakiri no watashi https://www.matsudo-kankou.jp/sightseeing/矢切の渡し/

- all news pages on that have been removed, e.g. http://www.sankei.com/article/20241213-QHKYRYU4INNULGDFCYWIK2LRGY/ :

Spoiler

- apart from the 70 000 yen for the kensho money (10 000 to the NSK), at least 1 for 15 days = 1.05 million yen, the banner has to be provided for about 65 000 yen - target was 1.15 million yen

- one photo page for a deleted article remained with a few details https://www.yomiuri.co.jp/pluralphoto/20241214-OYT1I50158/

However they didn't fully check the NSK requirements - the call was cancelled the next day. The NSK had told them: for placing a kensho, donations or fund raising are not allowed http://www.sankei.com/article/20241214-7RCVEB6BJNIVTGFOOBMKMDDPJE/

- the sponsor has to pay for it himself

- we had thoughts about collecting money for a forum kensho banner here once: that wouldn't have been allowed either

If you formed a Sumoforum Club and collected membership fees, you could sponsor a Sumoforum club kensho via that, couldn't you?

There are several methods to collect money and have one official sponsor to place the kensho - the fault by the city of Matsudo was to publish the fund raising nationwide as PR for Kotozakura - and most of all, to ask the NSK about it

Side note. With Virtua Fighter coming back strong into public conscience for, at least, those interested in videogames, and their rikishi character, I'd love to see some VF kensho.

I thought rikishi don't prefer pigs or other four legged animals as they represent touching the dohyo with all four limbs but I guess a kensho is ok...

As expected, the most kensho ever applied for this time: 2955, the most so far were 2618 last year Aki - this year we may get to 3000

13 new sponsors, the top 3 in individual kensho are Kotozakura 223, Onosato 209 and Oshoma 129, the kensho wonder, due to an influential koenkai

4 Midorifuji 115, 5  Kirishima 114, 6 Mitakeumi 113, 7 Oho 106 and just barely above 100 at 8 Hoshoryu with 102. Terunofuji has 93.

415 kensho fix on the 15 final bouts (musubi  - no ichiban) and 123 on the 2nd to last (musubi-mae)

Day 1 has 240 kensho in total, it takes at least 2 hours to put the 30 000 yen each in all the envelopes

The 3 MLB kensho are on the last bout, Nagatanien starts with 3 on their regulars Terunofuji and Atamifuji and 2 on Endo, 2 each on all 3 ozeki, Kotozakura, Hoshoryu, Onosato

Terunofuji himself has less than half as the 2 popular ozeki, but more on his bout than the 2 combined on theirs

The bout without kensho is Tamashoho-Kagayaki

XXXL for Wakatakakage, including fan decided Morinaga-sho - either people don't expect much from Kotozakura this basho or due to that special pairing. I don't trust the number from Nikkan though, 60 is the allowed maximum for sponsors to place, but with the Morinaga-sho it would be 61. Either Nikkan missed that or actually only 59 were intended. XXL for Tobizaru.

Again visitors from Midas Capital in the hall, 5 each on the Isegahama boys, also Hakuoho. Apart from him, only Takerufuji and Midorifuji got that pack. Regular Midas only has one on Terunofuji. Tamawashi with the pack from sitting duck Oshoma is in rankings from the start, but only just. Tokihayate with an exceptionally large bout 1 pack, Midas enhanced, as was Wakamotoharu's - Hakuoho, Takerufuji and Takarafuji had not enough other kensho and even with these big packs couldn't make it to the rankings.

Day 1 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2501_01.pdf

60:    Wakatakakage (M)
32:    Kotozakura
24:    Tobizaru
18:    Hoshoryu
15:    Wakamotoharu
13:    Midorifuji
12:    Mitakeumi
10:    Oho
9:    Tamawashi
8:    Tokihayate

Tomorrow MLB is on Kotozakura-Abi, as the last 3 - before a possible Morinaga-sho. Nagatanien saves the kensho for later, the 3 ozeki only got the 2 on day 1, day 2 only the regular 3 have their standard set. Takasu is in the house from the start of makuuchi: 3 on Nishikigi and 5 on Hoshoryu - regular only 1 on Hoshoryu.Takayasu sponsor Tachikawa Tachihi (3 each day) like the NSK celebrates 100 years of existence. https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2501_02.pdf

Day 1 had the most kensho ever for one day, 244. 60 placed on the last bout is still reported, no mention of the Morinaga-sho, so likely it were 61: the max pack

Morinaga as expected on Kotozakura, should stay on him till he drops 2 behind the leader, except for some special pairing. Takasu arrived at his dangerous seat already in juryo, for Shirokuma-Ryuden - his 2 favorites both won, but Nishikigi will hardly ever make it into the rankings. Abi only made to 8th place in the rankings with the win - Hoshoryu in the musubi-mae had more this day (Takasu enhanced), Onosato as well, same size as on day 1, due to the combined pack of kensho no.2&5.

Day 2 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2501_02.pdf

60:    Wakatakakage
43:    Hoshoryu

24:    Onosato
24:    Tobizaru
22:    Oho
21:    Abi
16:    Daieisho
15:    Wakamotoharu

Tomorrow MLB on Hoshoryu-Wakatakakage, they are going down the banzuke with the bout selection, day 4 should be the Onosato bout.

Tobizaru gets another ginboshi pack, next a kinboshi pack is in reach. The Morinaga-sho already after the first loss went to Hoshoryu today, or rather again to a bout with Wakatakakage

Day 3 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2501_03.pdf

33:    Oho
32:    Kotozakura
29:    Abi
20:    Mitakeumi
20:    Daieisho

Tomorrow MLB as expected on Onosato, vs. Abi. Hoshoryu is down to his personal set of 4 against sponsorless Takanosho.

Day 2 pics - the record kensho basho has plenty of pics with the big packs

Tobizaru knows how to collect, 3rd kinboshi from Terunofuji and 3rd big pack this basho - 4-4 against Teru as yokozuna, including one fusensho. But Ab might do even better - Tobizaru had all the big pack bouts, Abi has still 2 to come - so far he won both in reach. Kensho wonder boy Oshoma with his 2nd win at last in the rankings, Kirishima needed just 1 - with big pack boost. - edit: the Morinagasho was on OHO!

Day 4 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2501_04.pdf

32:    Kotozakura
27:    Kirishima
26:    Oshoma

Tomorrow MLB back to Terunofuji - they don't go down to sekiwake bouts. All bouts have kensho for the first time this basho.

Tobizaru jumped on top with a meager 3 kensho pack, from now on he's only going down the rankings, but not as fast as Terunofuji. Now the ozeki share the big pack in turns. Hopefully the redistribution for the last bout is published later,  the 6 personal each day for Terunofuji should be cancelled - from now on. Atamifuji into the rankings for his first win - in the new last bout. All big packs went to lower ranks, but Shodai needs more of these packs to enter the rankings - tomorrow the biggest is in reach.

Day 5 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2501_05.pdf

79:    Tobizaru
78:    Terunofuji
70:    Wakatakakage

63:    Hoshoryu
48:    Abi
46:    Onosato
39:    Atamifuji
35:    Oshoma
35:    Kirishima

Tomorrow MLB on Hoshoryu - first ozeki bout, no longer the same order of selection. Nagatanien lost their main man, now the ozeki all get 2 - except Kotozakura, who meets regular guy Atamifuji and has 3 - but likely he won't get them.

No more chance for Abi or others to get the yokozuna pack with attached kinboshi - Tobizaru was the last to collect that

Actually it had been posted, but Sanspo has vanished from my newspaper overview page, like the main sumo articles from NikkanSP did a while ago. http://www.sanspo.com/article/20250116-FGDAWUKRXZNWHAP7SRJSHO2JWQ/

Of the 31 for the planned bout, 19 went to Atamifuji in the new last bout, 5 to other bouts (Shodai-Kotozakura & more), 7 were cancelled

The Morinaga-sho yesterday was on Oho, fans seem to think he's the real deal now. For today I'll check it tomorrow, when the Abema broadcast is available - thanks to Asashosakari I now can download the original VODs and thus no longer use the live broadcasts on YT - I rather watch/record NHK live. Abema is weird with the makuuchi VOD though: the one up to juryo is available immediately, makuuchi only after next day's broadcast starts, till then it's still marked as active broadcast.

Likely it will stay this way at the top, unless Atamifuji gets the 3rd available big pack next - but in the end it should be Onosato and Hoshoryu 2nd.

Day 6 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2501_06.pdf

46:    Kirishima

Tomorrow MLB on Onosato, Kotozakura was skipped, maybe they rather want to have a bout with more winning chance for the ozeki. Kotozakura in the last bout was also removed from the Nagatanien list, Onosato has the 3 with Atamifuji.

Kotozakura is not yet out of the basho, Hoshoryu with his meager packs has to struggle to finish 2nd if he goes on like this and drops the big ones in the last bout. Shodai made it into the rankings with this, but it's too tedious to count the number in his pack - maybe it gets reported someway. That the lower end was 50 already on day 7 is a sign of the present kensho boom. Terunofuji with 78 will definitely drop out later on. Kensho attractor Oshoma with 4 wins isn't in the rankings anymore now, Abi surpassed him today, but it was not enough to return.

Îf he goes on like this, Hoshoryu will finish 3rd, Kotozakura hasn't given up yet on kachi-koshi. Kinbozan has to get several ginboshi to get into the rankings, so far only a komusubi next - but he got the Morinaga-sho, switching today from Oho, who had it on his bouts from day 4 to 8.

When Kotozakura wins a few more, Hoshoryu has no chance to catch up, with his meager envelop stack.

The sumo channel counted them - 51 - and posted a video of the parade, and a bit more (till Kotosubasa's yumitori)

Kinbozan needs to win all ozeki bouts to get into the rankings. Abi was just outside the rankings and with a meager 3 kensho replaced Atamifuji, yesterday he also had the Morinaga-sho, which was again on Kinbozan.

Day 11 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2501_11.pdf

200:    Onosato
179:    Kotozakura
155:    Hoshoryu
109:    Oho
101:    Kirishima
85:    Wakatakakage
85:    Tobizaru
84:    Shodai
78:    Terunofuji
64:    Abi

Tomorrow MLB on Hoshoryu, vs. Kinbozan, with this Nagatanien saves 2 and places 2 also on the other 2 ozeki with yusho relevant opponents, who had 2 also today, Chiyoshoma against Hoshoryu and I overlooked it for Takerufuji against Daieisho. In addition the remaining yusho hopefuls for their bout get also 2, Oho against Kirishima.

Day 10

Takerufuji

Atamifuji replaced Abi again, Onosato looks unstoppable here now. Hoshoryu has good chances for no. 2 if Kotozakura drops out, once he goes makekoshi. Takerufuji is lingering somewhere below, the musubi-mae had about 20, maybe somebody again counts his pack.

Day 12 https://www.sumo.or.jp/pdf/honbasho/kansen/torikumi/2501_12.pdf

240:    Onosato
179:    Kotozakura
169:    Hoshoryu (M)
118:    Kirishima
109:    Oho
88:    Wakatakakage
87:    Shodai
85:    Tobizaru
78:    Terunofuji
72:    Atamifuji

Tomorrow MLB on Kotozakura, again vs. Kinbozan, the other 2 ozeki meet as well, Nagatanien has some to spare. 2 each are on Oho, vs. Ura, and Takerufuji, vs. Abi.

Day 11

Hoshoryu
