Ex-Juryo Chiyoarashi (32) has retired. He is 0-4 at Makushita 16.

Sad. Nine years between juryo appearances (2013 to 2022). Four months removed of being so close to the makushita yusho, too. His body could still do it but the poor guy probably couldn't take more disappointments.

I think there's a more practical reason as well, he is married and his wife gave birth to their first child, a daughter, between Nagoya and Aki basho last year (perhaps giving him a boost for that 6-1 doten result). They live in Kagoshima, I suppose he feels the time is right to earn a regular salary and set up home as a family.

17 years in sumo. He holds the record for the longest time it took to return to sekitorihood - 50 bashos between terms. (Showa era and on)

Chiyoarashi filed his intai papers after his last bout, on the 20th, day 7, they were accepted the same day.

Ms13w Kanzaki (1-3) yorikiri Ms16w Chiyoarashi (0-4 ->intai)

He shook hands with ex-Kotoyuki in front of the shitaku-beya, the 2 were the same school year and same basho shin-juryo - age 20 (he started directly after middle school, Kotoyuki one year later). After that he was plagued by knee injuries, dropped down to jonidan from sekitori and after a short juryo return since Nagoya 2022 was in makushita. Last year in June he had surgery at the right knee and at the Aki basho got to 6-0, but then failed to get the yusho. This was his 100th basho, with 6 basho as sekitori.

The danpatsu-shiki will be at the Kokonoe-beya senshuraku party.

Ishiura posted in his danpatsu Twitter, Keitenkai, former juryo from Onomatsu-beya, is retiring. He lost his final match vs Hogasho, 3-4 at Sandanme 31.

https://x.com/ishiuradanpatsu/status/1751597386861064635

He got injured in his Juryo debut, pulled out from day 3 on, continued to pull out until falling to Jonokuchi. Remained in Makushita for most of his career, then around 2022 stabilized himself in Sandanme. 3 lower division yushos, 336 wins over 95 basho.

Sad. Keitenkai's juryo tragedy was one of the first few things I remember after rekindling my interest for ozumo and joining this forum. He really lasted long - but this was inevitable since he fell out of makushita on merit (or lack thereof) and stopped looking like maybe just maybe he could someday pull a Kitaharima. Part of my sumo fandom retires this day.

Whats weird is that he isn't on the announcements of intai, maybe Ishiura jumped the gun?

Raoh already quit after Kyushu, but hadn't handed in the papers - after his last bout there on day 14 with little brother Baraki

20240131s00005000458000p_thum.jpgo

He had decided to retire already last August and in consultation with the shisho selected Fukuoka for his last appearance, where he spent his high school days. (and then one basho kyujo, where the heya gets the allowance for him and he free meal and health care). He wants to get a qualification as care worker in Nagoya and work there in the future.

Omoto after his last bout on day 14 this basho with the rikishi of Ikazuchi-beya - he was the oldest there

20240131s00005000461000p_thum.jpgo

Starting in April he plans to teach at a primary school in Shiga pref. He got his teacher's license at Ritsumeikan university and wasn't sure at first if he should become rikishi or teacher - now he gets both.

Maenofuji retires after a 25-year career, a nice round 150 basho, and his final win was his 500th in total. On posting the pictures from his danpatsu-shiki, Takadagawa-beya remarked that his Makushita debut in his 100th career basho was the slowest in history.

Takadagawa-oyakata (former Sekiwake Akinoshima) concludes the ceremony with the tomebasami.

Hatachijo retires after a 21-year career - he originally entered Hatachiyama-beya which closed in 2006 after the premature death of the shisho, the remaining rikishi moved to Kitanoumi/Yamahibiki-beya. With his retirement, Amamidake is the last active survivor of Hatachiyama-beya.

Spoiler

Hatachijo was greeted with flowers in the hanamichi by his stablemates after his final bout.

Izumigawa retires after an eight-year career, having originally made his debut in Minezaki-beya. When the heya closed in 2021 the remaining rikishi moved to Shibatayama-beya. He suffered a terrible left knee injury in summer 2022, having two surgeries and a lengthy period of rehabilitation. Thankfully it won't affect his daily life, but continuing in sumo was not recommended so he is retiring now.

Spoiler

With his first-and-last oichomage at the heya senshuraku party.

Sad to see Mitozakura retire - he was the last rikishi from Nakamura-beya, which closed in 2012. I think he had the best shiko of anyone on the banzuke, a mantle which in my opinion now goes to Tsurunoumi. Persistent back problems led to his gradual drop down the banzuke, and ultimately the decision to retire.

Having joined ozumo from middle school, he later became a high school graduate via correspondence course from Japan Aviation High School.

Itadaki retires after almost 14 years on the dohyo, leaving Nishikigi as the last active deshi of the previous Isenoumi-oyakata, former Sekiwake Fujinokawa.

I only just noticed that he never had more than five wins in any basho.

I thought there would be more from Chiyoarashi's danpatsu-shiki, but perhaps being held on senshuraku it was overshadowed by Terunofuji's yusho and Kotonowaka's promotion. Anyway, here are the half-dozen pictures of decent quality I've found.

Spoiler

The Kyokai announced Keitenkai's intai earlier. Sponichi's headline leads with "bad luck" which pretty much sums it up - torn ACL in only his second Juryo bout, didn't get the chance to wear the kesho-mawashi from his alma-mater Saitama Sakae, nor the traditional NHK shin-Juryo interview which usually takes place a few days into the basho.

After recovering from the knee injury he fought back to Ms2e by 2015 Hatsu, but missed out on a Juryo return when he lost on the final day in a winner-gets-promoted bout with Kizenryu.
