Akua had his yumitori debut at the jungyo in Kashihara https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1opZmY1E4Z/

Before that 3 days Hananoumi, then Kototsubasa, after that again Hananoumi, then Kototsubasa - maybe Akua again tomorrow

As the jungyo came to Akua's home pref. Ibaraki, he of course was on duty and the media focused on it.

But only in Tsukuba yesterday, today also Ibaraki, but Hananoumi is doing it - maybe 2 in a row is yet too much for Akua.

As expected, Akua has his basho debut, he's on schedule for the yumitori on day 1 of the Natsu basho. https://www.daily.co.jp/general/2025/05/10/0018968161.shtml

He was on schedule every other day at the end of the jungyo

Akua screwed up yesterday's gig, almost missed the bow behind his back. Consequence - Hananoumi was back today. Now, this could all be nonsense and maybe Akua is injured or something, but when I saw that yesterday, I said to myself- "This guy is way too jovial for the Kyokai to perform this serious ceremony." Myself agreed. So, we'll probably know soon.

Isnt he out because hoshoryu is out? I thought the bow twirler was associated with active yokozuna so nishonoseki will supply twirler for the rest of the tournament

Well, I heard that the entire reason hoshoryu was out was because Akua was too happy-go-lucky with his bow twirling.

Yep. To be fair, his bow-twirling on day 5 was very sloppy and half-hearted, probably because he already knew he was done for now.

Probably.

In a weird turn of events, the two faced each other today in Makushita in the "Battle of the Yumitorikishi." Akua beat Hananoumi by hikiotoshi. Having won his third win, Akua said with a relaxed expression, "I was nervous about the yumitori showdown.. Everyone was talking about it..." From the first day of this tournament, Akua who serves as Yokozuna Houshouryuu's tsukebito, performed the  ceremony. However, due to Houshouryuu's kyujo Hananoumi, who is Yokozuna Oonosato's tsukebito, took over from him from day six. According to Akua he plans to retire from the  ceremony at the end of this basho. From now on, Makushita Kamito and Jonidan Tatsuoushou (highest rank lower Makushita but working his way back up after an injury), who are also from Tatsunami beya, will be getting ready. Next basho, a rikishi from the East Yokozuna's heya will be in charge of the yumitorishiki. At least at the start..

Says next basho. Isn't it always the case?

Tying the yumitori performer specifically to who the highest-ranking rikishi is on any given banzuke or tournament day was basically never a thing, until they weirdly started to do it these last few years.

Slightly off-topic: the yumitori-shiki at the Nagasaki-kunchi on Oct. 7th will this year be performed by amateur rikishi Yehor (Ukraine, 3rd year at Nagasaki pref. Kakuyo high school)

The next Ukrainian, not as promising as Danylo (Aonishiki), but with the proper preparation: best 8 in heavyweight and with the team at the world junior championships on Oct. 10th in Tachikawa, then 15, now 16: Yehor Chuhun - エゴール・チュグン  Egouru Chugun - came again to Japan on Oct. 25th and entered Nagasaki pref. Kakuyo high school as refugee exchange student on Nov. 1st. He wants to graduate there and become a strong rikishi, become like Hakuho - who started at much less than half of his weight at his age.

the training for the event was yesterday youtube.com/watch?v=WAVepJ0p0qo&t=42s

He didn't get a tsukedashi at the interhigh, but still has a chance at the kokuspo end of this month - likely he'll linger in makushita for longer and could make it to proper yumitori-rikishi - he'll have to get into the right heya for that though

Another new performer - Sd40e Rakanji will do the yumitori-shiki this basho. He performed it at least twice during the Natsu jungyo, at the stops in Koriyama and Ushiku.

Real name Sato Konosuke- changed to Rakanji Kandai a year ago. The name is derived from Rakan-ji Temple, a famous Buddhist temple in Nakatsu City, Oita Prefecture, where Sato was born. "Rakan" means in Buddhism someone who has cut off all earthly desires, attained enlightenment, and is worthy of respect. The name is meant to convey the idea of approaching this highest stage, and since he is currently "in training" and has not yet reached that level, the character "ji" (meaning child or boy, and can also be read as "ko") has been added. When and if he reaches that stage, Nishonoseki may have a new shikona in store for him. Nishonoseki Oyakata changed Rakanji's first name as well to "Kandai", taken from one character of Nishonoseki Oyakata's name, and as the word itself suggests, it is filled with the hope that he will become a great rikishi.

Hananoumi had sprained his right ankle and had to return to the heya, so Rakanji took over. Hananoumi was on duty in Gifu and Koga, day 2 and 4.

Rakanji after first in Koriyama also did it in Sendai, Obihiro, both days in Sapporo, Yurihonjo, Niigata, Kanazawa and Kasukabe as the last location.

Kamito and Kototsubasa were the other regulars at the bow.
