Kyujo announcements and speculations

Tamanoshima apparently hurt his left elbow after a fall from dohyo. He looked to be in pain so I wouldn't be surprised to see him join Musashimaru, Kaio & Chiyotaikai. ;-)

Kyodo newsflash says:

"21:34 Yokozuna Takanohana apparently suffers shoulder injury"

No more mentioned. On German sumoforum there is talk about Takanohana injuring himself in MIyabiyama's throw at the first bout. The fact that he fought the other bout too and won indicates the shoulder can't be dislocated at least IF the talk comment on injury happening during at the throw.

I noticed some wobbling after the second bout but that didn't imply to shoulder injury IMO but something else perhaps.

Any news appreciated!

Sponichi reports Takanohana spent a long time in the bathroom and came out with ice on his shoulder AND he didn't have his left arm in the kimono sleeve. He didn't make any comment despite swarming bunch of reporters with blood adrenaline levels high.

It was reported several times afterwards, however, that it was nothing all that serious. Tamanoshima himself commented that it was only his old injury and he wouldn't even be going to the hospital or anything.He said he would just cool the part down and it'd be just fine. - For a side note, Sadogatake ( the day's commentator ) said Tamanoshima has weak joints. ;-)

I didn't know about Takanohana's possible injury...

Miyabiyama was taken back to shitaku-beya in wheelchair as his right knee seemed to get injured. Has someone seen anyone come back the next day after leaving the dohyo in wheelchair? ;-)

Miyabiyama had injured his right ankle already in tori-naoshi against Takanohana and according to himself (report courtesy of Amanogawa-zeki, arigatou ;-) )would have gone kyujo if he hadn't had Asashoryu in next day's schedule. Brave effort he did with good tsuki but evidently that right ankle couldn't stand the pressure and gave out.

Today it was Tamakasuga's turn to stay away from dohyo. Kyokai's page says he has been given kosho status. Anyone with details? I don't remember anything special about his yesterday's bout. Kobo got a freebie.

Tochiazuma is possibly suffering from enteritis/some inflammation of intestens. Maybe the diahoarrea was a bit more vicious than a regular one.

Tochiazuma after his 4th loss:

Miyabiyama will be out of Haru basho. Basic ankle fracture (malleus) I think.

Ken Coller claims at SumoNow that Kotomitsuki has an arm injury. Anyone with an opinion or fact?

Sadogatake himself said the same during his commentary shift in TV studio few days ago. Left elbow, if I remember correctly. (Unhappy...)

Have you noticed that Miyabiyama hasn't got kosho status? Maybe because he got injured one day before he dropped out?

I doubt he thinks he can come back this basho so I think it could just be that for some reason Musashigawa hasn't yet applied kosho for his deshi.

Or it could have something to do with your suggestion. Actually I don't really know for sure. What would be the rule here? Details like these remind me I'm still a newbie as a sumo fan. (Looks around...)

I think they have to apply for Kosho the day they get injured, or within a certain timeframe of the injury's occurance.

This is like what happened with Kotomitsuki when he suffered the broken jaw. He came back the next day and wrestled another bout before pulling out. For that reason they denied him Kosho status.

Whatever problems Azuma had prior to his bout against Dejima, he evidently dislocated his shoulder in that heavy fall when Deji turned things around. He said he heard a crunching noise at the impact. He was hoping to continue fighting on day 6 but in the morning shoulder condition had deteriorated and he went kyujo. 2 months is mentioned once again as the recovery time. Doesn't look good for Azuma with constant shoulder dislocations and rotator cuff tears. His shoulder is becoming a real burden for his future career.

Kotomitsuki's elbow is painful which was evident after his bout against Wakanosato. He simply held the arm flexed and was careful not to move it while walking back to his side of the dohyo. Then again he has beaten Tenho today.

Tamakasuga's knee injury is a meniscus tear.

Kaio has started training bouts two days ago. Before that he had done a lot of other training.

After day 14 bout against Takanotsuru, Kasugao went straight to hospital without taking bath. He says he heard/felt a snap in his muscle and might consider going kyujo on senshuraku depending on the diagnosis. No details given concerning the location of the injury yet.

Hmm... Kasugao is 9-5, chance for 10 wins if he don't declare kyujo  :-D  But last day fight with 'tenho will be difficult, I don't think he can win anyways, so maybe better to kyujo and not lose?  What do people think is the better option?

Impressive win for Kasugao over the new sideburn man yesterday   (Exclamation)

That shouldn't matter. What should matter, if he is really injured, is that he doesn't be stupid and go out there and risk further injuring himself and ruining a promising career. That is what should matter to him. He has his KK, so he shouldn't take any unneccessary chances.

I know that isn't the mindset of these guys, but sometimes it should be.

The other thing is, if he DOES pull out, he will probably get KOSHO, and could sit out the next basho sitting pretty, which would essentially guarantee something that no doubt is very important to him, being ranked in Makuuchi by the time the Jungyo tour goes to Korea unless he totally blows the May Basho (or when was the tour again?)

If he decides to fight, no kosho.

Cheers

Zenjimoto
