Former rikishi activities

Recommended Posts

Former yumitori rikishi and later juryo Chiyonoumi (71) will close his Fukuoka chanko nabe restaurant "Chiyonoumi" next February. His chanko was something special, which the rikishi only got at the Kyushu-basho. He wanted to continue till 75, but his knees won't carry on this long. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/column/sumo/news/1742031.html

Former Maegashira Takanoyama appeared in the May issue of a Czech fight magazine called "Bojová umění". Looking in good shape. This is what Google makes of the text on the picture:

Quote

The extraordinary story of a man who has been a respected member of Japanese national sport for fourteen years

Pavel Bojar: Sumo taught me self-control

No other Czech can tell you a similar story. The sporting path of Pavel Bojar is absolutely unique. The irreconcilable Judah pupil has become a recognized star amount. And that's right in Japan, where this sport is a national tradition.

recognized star of sumo (suma = sum [of money] in various Slavic languages :-D)

The Judah part is also probably wrong, but my Czech is... meh.

I'm guessing it's supposed to mean "Judoka".

Unlike Osh, former j10 Arashi was really made shop manager, in the NEKI Tokyo antenna shop for fuchuyaki, a kind of okonomiyaki originating from Fuchu-city, Hiroshima, to open in August in Chiyoda ward (not in Fuchu-city, Tokyo). http://www.chugoku-np.co.jp/local/news/article.php?comment_id=360119&comment_sub_id=0&category_id=110

Intai in March Hokutoryu (46) has started his 2nd life as trainee in a karaage shop in Fukuoka. He supported Kitanoumi-beya for many years, especially as the one in charge of chanko. After he dropped to jonidan, because of whiplash he couldn't do enough keiko any more, but he wanted to help Kitanoumi and the heya and switched to chanko-ban. At age 30 he got diabetes, but also took on the responsibility for the setup of lodgings at regional basho. After Haru 2014, because of the diabetes his left big toe had to be amputated, but he kept his promise to the okamisan to help the heya till the retirement of the oyakata. After the untimely death of Kitanoumi, he decided to continue till the first death anniversary. And he kept on till Kyushu 2016. Then he lost all determination: at the Hatsu-basho he had his 1st ever 0-7 result, and at the Haru basho he decided to retire. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20170807/k00/00e/040/170000c

Hokutoryu has announced his retirement after 31 years on the ozumo dohyo, signing off with a win which secured his kachi-koshi. He made his debut in March 1986 as one of the earliest recruits to the new heya established by former Yokozuna Kitanoumi. With his retirement, Hanakaze stands alone as the last remaining rikishi to have made his debut in the Showa era.

As the ironman of the lower divisions, Hokutoryu chalked up 1,169 consecutive bouts which is a record for a rikishi without sekitori experience. That came to an end in 2014 after he suffered diabetes-related problems with his left foot, requiring surgery to remove the big toe. With the encouragement of Kitanoumi he overcame that and we saw the unlikely occurrence of a 43-year-old participating in maezumo.

Hokutoryu's intention was to continue until Kitanoumi reached the mandatory retirement age (which would have been in May 2018), but sadly Kitanoumi passed away in November 2015. Hokutoryu pledged to continue at least until the first anniversary of his death and then carry on if he felt able. However, in January this year he suffered the first zenpai (0-7) record of his career, which made him realise that the end was near. He shed a few tears when discussing his former shisho with the reporters in the hanamichi.

Ex-(still)Shiraishi, also tsukebito of Kokonoe-oyakata, had to quit ozumo because of continuous injuries. He then went to vocational school and learned the trade at a famous Cantonese restaurant in Osaka. Of course he had also chanko duties in the heya, but was already used to cook for himself since he was a child, because both parents were working.

He uses white sesame from Kikaijima (Kagoshima) for the dishes in his Szechuan noodle restaurant in Osaka "Kikaijima tantanmen".

Ex-Notozakura apparently also is good singer https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/能登櫻和也 - he performed sumo jinku at a live event in Suzu-city, close to his hometown Noto http://www.hokkoku.co.jp/subpage/H20171203104.htm

making the hall of the old Ukai station filled with about 30 spectators boil with excitement

The wedding of ex-Tokutaiho took place on the 5th as the first in the relatively new Amagi bousai center (Tokunoshima). Currently he works at airport security. He met his Tokyo wife as rikishi at a mochi pounding event at the nursery school she was working. http://amamishimbun.co.jp/index.php?QBlog-20180106-3

Ex-Wakatsutomu (NAKAO Hiroki) runs a restaurant in Nakano; looks like a Mongolian helmet-style grill at the tables.  Recent visits from Henry Sentoryu Miller and Ichinojo.  Restaurant "Genghis Khan Daruma Doll Nakano" (sorry, no Japanese skills at all!)

On Facebook: Hiroki Nakao.

Ex-makushita from Kasugano-beya Otsuka sent a message of joy for the yusho of Tochinoshin. He runs the chanko restaurant Daichaan in his hometown Kusatsu and had many cancelled reservations recently due to the eruption of Mt Kusatsu-Shirane - but now "With this I can look forward and do my best." He has never talked to Tochinoshin though, intai in 1983, but both Kasugano-oyakata and Hakkaku-rijicho have been guests in his shop - at first he had a restaurant in Tokyo and moved to Kusatsu several years ago. http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20180127-OHT1T50255.html

The yusho of Tochinoshin also strengthened the resolve of ex-Kokkai to propagate sumo in Georgia. He's a 2nd hand car dealer now and is consulted by many wrestling athletes who want to turn to sumo. He plans to build a training place for kids: "I want to convey not only the techniques, but also the spirit of sumo" http://www.nikkei.com/article/DGXMZO27494820Y8A220C1EAC000/

Former Homareumi now is a staff member of the Social Welfare Council of Izumo-city, of which his former hometown Koryo is now a part. He was on chanko duty at Takadagawa-beya and now helps the NPO Support Center Dream for artistic activities (so also the art of cooking) for disabled persons at making chanko-nabe: the special chanko of Takadagawa-beya for the first and last day of a basho.

His initial shikona Homareumi 誉湖 conveys the meaning of "being proud of Koryo" 湖陵 - a broken leg and other injuries stopped his career in jonidan.

http://mainichi.jp/articles/20180419/ddl/k32/040/314000c

he's in the back, in the middle  - at the first chanko making event on the 15th -  more events are planned

I don't want to create a thread "Former rikishi criminal activities", so I just put it here.

Former Takaora (guess the heya) was arrested today by the Gunma police for robbing a shop that buys the prizes won at pachinko. He demanded money by threatening the employee with a kind of sickle: "Hand over the money! There's another one outside." He escaped with a fake bundle of money, of which only the top and bottom was a real 10 000 yen note - so he was just arrested as suspect for stealing 20 000 yen. http://www.sanspo.com/geino/news/20180422/tro18042221190001-n1.html

I didn't know whether to react with a "sad" or a "ha!ha!" emoji -- both, I guess.

The heya part: yeah, he's gone since 2012, maybe Takanohana didn't have enough time to "raise him up right."

Of course, if Saito-san was trying to get funds to join the koenkai, that's different.;-)

I wondered how long it would take till the name of the heya would appear - and of course a low end tabloid is the one. The part time employee was a 71 year old man. Since after quitting sumo, Saito worked in the production line at the Gunma factory of the Maruha Nichiro fishing company and had no history of rule infractions.

Of course the tabloid mentions that some related person believes that Saito had quit the heya to escape the routinely daily violence by Takanohana towards his deshi.

Former Osawa held a running class for kids. He had been a middle-distance runner for 5 years before he joined sumo, from high school to junior college, but now his special training includes shiko stamping, to have the kids firmly kick the ground while running.

He now is a member of his town's regional revitalization cooperative.
