Ceremonial dohyo-iri

Recommended Posts

Harumafuji did a ceremonial dohyo-iri at the Izumo-taisha in Shimane prefecture - this time the main shrine in Izumo, not his heya's "home shrine", the Izumo-taisha Sagami extra shrine in Kanagawa prefecture, city of Hadano. The shrine had it's shintai moved back again, the object with the dwelling deity - the premises had been renewed after 60 years. Aminishiki from the same heya was this time tsuyu-harai and tachi-mochi was Okinoumi, who is from Shimane.

The executive committee chief: "The 'founder of sumo', Nomi-no-Sukune was the 13th regional administrator of Izumo. Sumo and the Izumo-taisha have since ancient times been linked together."

Today at the Sumiyoshi-taisha - the yokozuna, for the first time the 3 of them, had their hounou-dohyo-iri there, about 2500 watched. Hakuho skipped the press conference afterwards.

Hakuho for the first time did a dohyo-iri at the Kashima-shrine in Kashima-city, Ibaraki. About 10 000 people were there.
And maybe for the first time with Takekaze as tachi-mochi and Yoshikaze as tsuyu-harai.

They all look so nice and crispy tanned, unlike a couple oyakata watching on so seriously. A video clip of yesterday's (technically today's) dohyo iri at Atsuta shrine:

I almost laughed at those oyakata. But that's how it is in Japan, got to put on a stern face.

A few extra pictures from the Atsuta shrine dohyo-iri.

All four Ozeki were also in attendance, receiving blessings (I assume that's what they're doing anyway) from a priest of the shrine. [4]

Opening ceremony on the 26th for a new sumo ground in Yahiko village, Niigata, at the Yahiko shrine, Isegahama-beya was there. Harumafuji did a dohyo-iri, with Takarafuji (at the sword) and Homarefuji as attendants. Terunofuji was model for mage making
Kyodo

Longer version with also drums, speeches, shokkiri, public keiko, bow twirling, interview etc

Isegahama-oyakata was named village mayor there for a day and his rikishi did the "hold the princess" thing and the "hold the baby" thing

in the end some amateur yokozuna dohyo-iri custom at the new sumo ground

Soon 400 years (in 2017) of the Nikko Toshogu shrine for Tokugawa Ieyasu (THE Shogun), the festivities for that have started early.
Kakuryu was the only yokozuna available, attendants are Tochiozan and Tochinoshin, since Nikko is in Tochigi prefecture.
About 2000 saw the first ever dohyo-iri at the Toshogu. Kakuryu: "I got energy and power from this"

The jungyo had a day off, but not Kakuryu (and his men): he had duties at the Zenkou temple in Nagano-city, where the jungyo is tomorrow.
About 3100 visitors watched his yokozuna dohyo-iri to calm the earth and as a pray for revival of the region after last year saw a landslide in July, the eruption of Mt. Ontake (from which Mitakeumi got his shikona) in September and a strong earthquake in November.

Kakuryu in Kyoto today had not only the jungyo dohyo-iri, but also one at the Kamigamo shrine (world heritage site), which had been in the news a lot recently for the many ceremonies in connection with the moving of the worshiped object to a new shrine building after 21 years (similar to the Ise shrine).

All 3 yokozuna did a dohyo-iri at the Sumiyoshi shrine in Fukuoka, in front of about 4500 spectators. Before that they made the obligatory shrine visit together with Nishonoseki-oyakata and others.

The way Hakuho's dohyo-iri is now and the way he moves and holds his hands, its almost birdlike, almost like a crane, or dare I say a 鵬?
