Akinomaki 40,895 Posted March 2, 2013 Both yokozuna on the 2nd did a dohyo-iri at the Osaka Sumiyoshi-taisha in font of about 3000 fans, first official ceremonial dohyo-iri there. The "Yokozuna" is said to have it roots at this Sumiyoshi grand shrine, where from the Heian period on a sumo meet as part of Shinto harvest festivities took place. One champion rikishi, Hajikami, around 814-824 a.d., never losing, wore round the waist the shrine rope, touching it meant a win as a special rule. Nobody could touch it. video at http://www.asahi.com/sports/update/0302/OSK201303020047.html Afterwards cleaning dinosaur fossils from Mongolia at the exhibit in the Osaka natural history museum.

Yubinhaad 11,783 Posted March 3, 2013 An extra pic and video from the Sumiyoshi Taisha dohyo-iri. It was 60 years to the day since the most notable Yokozuna visit to the shrine. On March 2nd 1953 Chiyonoyama, Azumafuji, Haguroyama, Kagamisato and Terukuni (who retired during the previous basho) were the visitors. Not the greatest camerawork I've ever seen, but still interesting. Harumafuji's dohyo-iri seemed to lack a bit of spark to me, while Hakuho had a slight stumble during his due to the unfamiliar surface. Harumafuji's starts around 0:55, Hakuho's at around 6:50. ======= And a few more from the museum visit:
Akinomaki 40,895 Posted March 3, 2013 (edited) Kise on the 2nd with Takayasu: 21-5, 4 losses in a row at the beginning.Today Harumafuji came for degeiko.Kisenosato (as usual) received a cut above the left eye from head banging and thus had only 2 bouts with Haru. With Takayasu Haru then was 14-3. His old injury at the ankle is still worrying him, he complained about the cold and wore tabi on both feet.Takayasu did 54 keiko bouts, also against the other Fuji's on degeiko.Takarafuji was 20-11, including 5-2 against Kisenosato.yesterdayFormer Asashoryu, honorary president of the Mongolian wrestling association, yesterday at an international conference in Ulan Bator about keeping wrestling Olympic.news page with video Edit: video page changed Edited March 4, 2013 by Akinomaki
Yubinhaad 11,783 Posted March 3, 2013 (edited) Some more pictures from Sumiyoshi Taisha. . . It was 60 years to the day since the most notable Yokozuna visit to the shrine. On March 2nd 1953 Chiyonoyama, Azumafuji, Haguroyama, Kagamisato and Terukuni (who retired during the previous basho) were the visitors.Terukuni, Chiyonoyama and Azumafuji shown during their visit of sixty years ago. Even earlier, Okido visited the shrine on January 6th 1910. He had been promoted to Yokozuna by the Osaka Sumo Association without the permission of the Tokyo association; they eventually promoted him officially as the 23rd Yokozuna almost three years later. (I don't think this picture shows him at Sumiyoshi Taisha, it's just the picture the Kyokai posted) Edited March 4, 2013 by Yubinhaad
Kintamayama 45,707 Posted March 4, 2013 (edited) Harumafuji went for degeiko today at Sadogatake. He was 16-6 against depressed Kotoshougiku. Some yotsu and throws, morozashi and yoris, nodowas-all thrown in in the mix. "The basho is close, so while getting into shape I guess I managed to do some good keiko, huh?" observed Harumafuji. Kintamayama 45,707 Posted March 4, 2013 (edited) Hakuhou was spotted at Kokonoe Beya doing a spot of degeiko. He checked out great hope Chiyotairyuu (who he probably will face for the first time) and Chiyonokuni- and others-25 bouts. "It's a heya with a lot of lively youngsters, so the keiko was good. I feel my condition (said it in English) has improved," he said somewhat later. He had 17 bouts with Chiyotairyuu, getting pushed back a few times by the powerful youngster, and was checking him out closely. "He takes his time at the tachiai, and he is sharp!!" concluded Hakuhou. Edit-some results- Against Juryo Chiyoootori- 3-2(!!!!), Chiyonokuni 3-0 and Chiyotairyuu 14-3. He hasn't visited Kokonoe's Osaka lodgings for 9 years. Last time he popped in he was still in Juryo. "I missed them.." he said jestingly. (I don't think this picture shows him at Sumiyoshi Taisha, it's just the picture the Kyokai posted) But they write that he did a hounou dohyo-iri as Osaka yokozuna - the papers had written that according to the NSK there had been no official one before. Apparently they don't count that one as official.

Kintamayama 45,707 Posted March 5, 2013 "I thought I was going to die.. I was on the verge of vomiting. A bit more of keiko and the dohyo was about to be covered in vomit.." said Chiyotairyuu after the session with Hakuhou yesterday. He did beat him three times, though. "I guess I had some powerful tachiais too.." he added.
