battle for 15th place, the wooden spoon

Jejima beats Pandaazuma 4:0

Thank you everyone and good luck for the Nagoya basho and all other endavors !

Isn't the win 5:0? Unless you exclude Spain 5 which never happened.

Plenty of choices here - I would have thought 3:0 as Spain did not score in the 3rd and 5th sections...

I think you are right, the score should be 3:0 because D vs. L (broken) is 0:0 (Situation #7) :(

Well, I also think I lost 0:0 and 2:1 to Andonishiki after extra-time (his slot should have been broken in 3rd place), but this is a difficult line-up to judge, so I am anything but sure.

You are right again. Thanks for pointing this to me I found a mistake in my Table. I'll revise my previous post. Once again thanks.

Congrats to chabonowaka for winning the whole shebang! (Applauding...)

And sorry for my anticlimactic performance in the finals. Guess my goalie was mentally destroyed in the semi-final by Asashosakari (who would have won the final against chabo with his decisive lineup - now I feel bad!)

Thanks to all players and staff - it was more fun than I expected.

Congrats to the winner! :-) I'll try to get the MCP-like scores out sometime this week...been running badly behind and haven't even had time to adjust the spreadsheet for the later rounds, let alone input the lineups and score them.

First, a nod toward Jakusotsu for a game well played, and thanks for defeating Asashosakari for me. Next, i'd like to thank Jejima for creating and running another interesting and fun game. also thanks to the gyojis, for trust me, that wasn't always an easy job. i would wonder if the trouble of automating this game for world cup 2014 would be worth the benefit that said automating would give. i've seen enough code in my time to understand how it would work, but not really enough to know how difficult or time consuming it would be to do it. but that's for another time. i'd like to take a lot of the credit for the win based on my vast wealth of football knowledge, except that i'm lacking a lot in the football knowledge department. i understand the game, and came to learn the tendencies of the teams involved, even though they didn't always perform as expected, but a football expert i am not. a lot of my victory is due to the bookmakers, as i watched them closely throughout the tournament, and also i got lucky a few times, especially early on with matchups working out in my favor. still, i did my best, and the results were quite positive. i thoroughly enjoyed the game, and do look forward to participating again in world cup 2014.

Congrats to Chabonowaka for winning the official game!

Thanks to Jejima and all the gyojis for their hard work.

I for one would like automation so I don't muff up my picks. Sorry about that.

Congratulations to all the winners of different honors!

I most admit that I'm sorry not beeing able to give this competition the dedication it deservers the full time out - as I find the competition absolutely great. I really enjoy both the structure and underlying purpus and is definitely interested in playing in future editions. MANY thanks to all the referees and especially Jejima who has put in an admirable amount of work into this years edition of the Bench EURO/world cup making it both clearer and running smoother then last time around. BIG KUDOS!

and i've calculated the matches i was gyoji-ing!

the first match is for 7th place, and features Rannohana (Ukraine) vs. Achiyama (Greece). Rannohana has both teams active, while Achiyama has only the Spaniards on his squad.

in the first slot, both players win, so no goal.

in the second slot, Achiyama's spain (1) wins, but Rannohana's spain (5) does not, so goal for Achiyama!

in the third slot, Rannohana took italy in the 1st section, and they lost, while Achiyama had spain (5). no goal, but Rannohana is out! chain broken!

that seals the win for Achiyama, and he is unable to score in his last two slots, so the win is for Achiyama, 1-0!

congratulations Achiyama!

the second match is for the Bench Bowl! this one features Mischashimaru (Sweden) vs Pitinosato (Germany)

well, this one has both players going with Spain only, so i think there is no way it can end with any other result than a shootout. so i will leave it to Jejima. (this is right, yes?)

(also, should i, for posterity sake, post the lineups for my matches, even though it's late now?)

Hi Chabonowaka,

Would you, please, post the line-ups of the 2 (two) matches you were gyojing. I couldn't find them posted. Thanks

final confo to be coming to this forum soon

Not so fast. I think the match finished 1:1 and Penalty Shootout is necessary. Hopefully, I didn't miss something.

I think you forgot that Chabonowaka's chain broke at Slot #2 (Situation #7), and BOTH chains have to be reopened for scoring.

At Slot #3 Jakusotsu scores a goal and the score becomes 1:1, and Chabonowaka's chain is broken for the second time at Slot #3.

At Slot #4 Jakusotsu's chain remains unbroken, but he doesn't score a goal.

At Slot #5 Jakusotsu's chain is broken for a second time and the GAME is OVER.

We have to wait for Jejima's confirmation. Sorry if I am not right, and I am sorry if I am right as well.

Battle for 3rd place

Asashosakari vs. Kintamayama

1. Spain 2 1.Italy ® (2)

2. Spain 4 2. Italy (1)

3. Spain 3 3. Italy (3)

4. Spain 1 4. Italy (5)

5. Spain 5 5.Italy (4)

6. ........... 6.Spain (E)(5)

7. ........... 7. Spain (4)

8. ........... 8. Spain (3)

9. ........... 9.Spain (2)

10............ 10. Spain (1)

Comment by Asashosakari: "Comment: Crapshoot, part 2. Perhaps with a better ending than in the semis... The group match between Kinta and me was a draw - I suspect I'll decisively lose on penalties if that happens here again."

Comment by Kintamayama: "It was fun, should have stuck with Italy (that I predicted will win the Cup at the very beginning..)all the way, instead of chickening out in the semis. I would have been in the finals today".

As for the game, I have no idea how the scoring works-way too complicated for me, so I just put the guys where I hope they'll do well...

Gyoji - Comment: "It is all Italy against Spain in the battle for 3rd place."

Scoring: Kintamayama's chain breaks in the first place and Asashosakari wins 3:0. Congratulations to Asashosakari!

I have a question. Asashosakari's chain breaks at Slot #6 (Situation #7), so don't you have to re-open both chains and continue the scoring? If "YES", then Kintamayama will score at Slots ## 7, 9 and 10, and the FINAL SCORE would be 3:3 and Penalty Shootouts would be necessary.

Let's see Jejima'suling on this match.

don't things only open back up in the event of a tie? i thought that if both chains are broken but the score is not tied, that's it, end of game. or that was it earlier in the game. if that changed for the later rounds, i missed that bit.

I don't know. My scorings during the Semifinals were way off Jejima's because I never did re-opening after both chains break. So, I applied this this time, but I am not sure that I am right, because I might not have read the rules in details. I didn't want to disappoint you and maybe I am wrong, that's why I am eager to see the ruling of the Creator of the rules.

Hi all!

Sorry for the delay.....

I still need to do the following:-

  1. Confirm the 'official' results of the Spain vs Italy final
  2. Confirm the results of the Bench Euro matches
  3. Publish the final standings table
  4. Compare (and contrast) with the final results table from the World Cup 2010
  5. Consider publishing an overall ranking (banzuke?) for the two games...
  6. Finalise the Outstanding Performance / Golden Boot Award
  7. Thank everyone for their help and participation
  8. Announce my suggested rule changes
  9. Open a discussion on other ideas
  10. Ask about when we would next run this competition

Bowl results....

11th place play-off

Wow! Rubensan was very unlucky! If he had chosen any of the slots 1,2 or 4 for his ® team, he would have won (4-0, probably)! - Instead he chose slot 3, and so had hid chain broken immediately. Harinezumi has his chain broken on the 4th slot, with the score being 0-0. So we go to extra time.... Harinezumi scores two goals to win!

Harinezumi 0-0, E.T. 2-0 Rubensan

Bowl (Previous Holder =Sekihiryu (Slovakia))

Well, both teams only had Spain left in their squad, so it was always going to be a draw.... Having checked their line-ups, they each score a goal in normal time, and no further goals in extra time....

Pitinosato 1-1, E.T. 1-1 Mischashimaru

Okay, will have to dig out their penalty takers....

I cannot find a list of penalty takers for the finals for Pitinosato - so I will use the first four of his semi-final penalty takers.....

Okay, here's the Thai coin.... Heads for Pitinosato, Tails for Mischashimaru....

Tails!

(Quickly checks the rules.... Sudden death starts after the second penalty taker... Got it ;-))

Mischashimaru ?????

Pitinosato ?????

Mischashimaru steps up with....

Germany! The ball sails over the bar!

Mischashimaru XX???

Pitinosato ?????

Pitinosato goes with....

Germany!

Mischashimaru XX???

Pitinosato XX???

Okay, Mischashimaru again....

Portugal! It is just one penalty goal... Pitinosato now has the edge....

Mischashimaru XXOXX

Pitinosato XX???

Pitinosato responds with....

Portugal! Level pegging again, and the start of sudden death....

Mischashimaru XXOXX

Pitinosato XXOXX

Mischashimaru has....

Spain! Three good penalties.... His fans are already sensing victory....

Mischashimaru XXOXXOOO

Pitinosato XXOXX?

Loads of pressure on Pitinosato....

Spain! Are these two twins?

Mischashimaru XXOXXOOO

Pitinosato XXOXXOOO

Back to Mischashimaru.....

Italy! Two penalties!

Mischashimaru XXOXXOOOOO

Pitinosato XXOXXOOO?

Remember that Pitinosato has a droning line-up, so he needs to have correctly predicted all the semi-finalists from before the quarter-finals to stay in....

Italy! He did it!

Mischashimaru XXOXXOOOOO

Pitinosato XXOXXOOOOO

Okay, we remain level.... For the observant, you will notice that these two have identical penalty takers in the first four slots..... So we go to the final tie-breaker, the time of the very first goal in the final.... The real first goal was scored in the 14th minute. Let's see what Mischashimaru predicted.... The 105th minute! That is a long way out!

Looking good for Pitinosato....

But, oops, he did not submit a prediction for the first goal...

So, it is Mischashimaru who gets that extra penalty, and wins the penalty shoot out 7-6

Mischashimaru XXOXXOOOOOO

Pitinosato XXOXXOOOOOX

Pitinosato 1-1, E.T. 1-1, pen 6-7 Mischashimaru

Mischashimaru manages to win the Bowl, despite having a droning line-up.... thanks to Pitinosato having droning penalty takers.

Plate results....

7th place play-off

I disagree with Chabonowaka, as I see two goals scored by Achiyama I agree 100% with Chabonowaka ;-)

Achiyama 1-0 Rannohana

Plate (Previous Holder = Jakusotsu (Netherlands))

This match went to extra time (as Achiyama pointed out).

XiaoTan 0-0, E.T. 1-2 Andonishiki

So Andonishiki is the Bench Euro 2012 Plate winner!

Cup results....

3rd place play-off

The chains are only re-opened in the event of a tie after normal time, therefore XiaoTan refereed it correctly. (Kintamayama put too much faith in Italy ;-))

Asashosakari 3-0 Kintamayama

Cup (Previous Holder = Oskanohana (Spain))

This match is also decided in normal time - so no need to reopen the chains....

Jakusotsu 0-1 Chabonowaka

So Chabonowaka is the champion of the Bench Euro 2012 Cup! (Yusho winner...)

Before the tournament started, I was impressed by Chabonowaka's picking strategy for his ® team - and he clearly studied form (and the bookmakers odds) throughout. So, I say he really earnt this win - and has set a level of professionalism that others will need to match for future comps! (Band playing...)

So, I was not right for Cabonowaka's and Asashosakari's matches. :-( I am very sorry! Somehow I missed the rule, that the reopening happens ONLY when the score is a DRAW.

At least, I learnt it for the future. :-)

As everthing is final I can say CONGRATULATIONS to CHABONOWAKA the WINNER of Bench Euro 2012 !!! (Yusho winner...) CHEERS ! (Singing drunk...)

I enjoyed playing the game very much.

I want to thank Jejima for puting together this game at a very short notice and managing the game so professionally.

I am looking forward to playing similar games in the fututre as well as discussing the rules and possibilities for future Bench Soccer games

WE DON'T HAVE TO WAIT TILL THE NEXT WORLD CUP IN 2014 - THERE ARE OTHER CONTINENTAL CHAMPIONSHIPS TO CONSIDER, OR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS ETC.

CHEERS TO ALL PLAYERS (Singing drunk...) AND GYOJIS (Singing drunk...) AND FANS (Singing drunk...) !!!

Hi all!

Here is the banzuke for Bench football,

The tally is calculated by adding the 'adjusted position' (see table a little above) from the Bench Euro 2012 to the position from the Bench World Cup 2010. For players that missed one of these, they are given a position of '33' for the skipped competition.

For players with the same tally, they are ranked in the order of their position at the Bench Euro 2012 (i.e. the most recent competition).

It is my intention to do the same tally again after the next competition that we play, and award Ozeki ranks for the top two players.
