Bench Euro 2012

Recommended Posts

Good luck to you Jejima. You have one more chance to not get 'dead-last' in your own tournament!

Dead last wins the Bench Wooden Spoon ;-)

But as Pandaazuma no longer has any active teams on his rota - he can only win via a penalty shoot-out (and hope that Italy dominates Spain....)!

Bowl Semi Finals

Harinezumi (1-1, 1-2 after extra time) Mischashimaru

I agree with Chabonowaka's scoring. I think Achiyama was misled by my earlier comment regarding a possible rule change for (E) teams in future tournaments. But after this 'exciting' match, I am rethinking again.

Pitinosato 2-0 Rubensan

This time I agree with Achiyama. This match is quite tragic for Rubensan.... If it had not had been that goal for Germany in the dying moments of the game, Pitinosato's chain would have been broken on the first slot, due to Germany being his ® team (and Rubensan's chain would not have been broken in the first slot) and Rubensan would have scraped a 1-0 victory). But that goal was scored, and as it was an ® for Pitinosato, it scores him two goals!

Maybe the double scoring for ® and © teams is something to consider for future tournaments as well - you'll have plenty of draws and 2 goals are almost impossible to catch up on. Given that getting your ® is partially luck, it skews the game a bit in IMO.

I strongly disagree. There needs to be 'special teams' in order to force a result. It was a big gamble (and that is the nature of an ® team) to risk it in first slot - had they drawn or lost that half, it would have broken the chain immediately. Also, it rewards players who manage to select (or get via the lottery) an ® team that will make it all the way to the semi-finals.

I guess I should read the full rules - as long as a draw breaks the chain it is even indeed. (Blushing...)

Plate Semifinals

XiaoTan (0-0, 1-1 after extra time) Rannohana

Chabonowaka scored it correctly. Penalty shoot-out required.....

Just a quick reminder of the rules... (I had to check them myself)... Teams reaching the finals score two penalties (so that would be Spain and Italy), teams that were knocked out in the Semi-Finals score one penalty (Portugal and Germany). Sudden death starts after the third penalties....

XiaoTan ?????

Rannohana ?????

Okay, I'll toss my Thai coin.... Heads for XiaoTan, Tails for Rannohana....

It's Heads! XiaoTan will take the first kick.....

XiaoTan forgot to send a list of penalty takers for the quarter-finals, but he was one of the earliest to send in his list for the semi-finals....

Germany!

It's in!

XiaoTan O????

Rannohana ?????

Rannohana..... Germany too!

XiaoTan O????

Rannohana O????

Second kick for XiaoTan....

Spain!

Two penalties converted!

XiaoTan OOO??

Rannohana O????

Rannohana has.....

Spain as well! He quickly pegs XiaoTan back...

XiaoTan OOO??

Rannohana OOO??

Okay, back to XiaoTan.....

Portugal! It's in!

XiaoTan OOOOX

Rannohana OOO??

Rannohana....

Portugal.... They are matching each other, penalty for penalty....

XiaoTan OOOOX

Rannohana OOOOX

Okay, now it is sudden death...

XiaoTan....

Italy! (Yes, he correctly predicted all of the semi-finalists). That gives him 2 penalties....

XiaoTan OOOOXOO

Rannohana OOOOX?

Can Rannohana continue to match him....?

Uh oh... It is Ashley Cole stepping up to take the kick....

England!

It's a save!

XiaoTan OOOOXOO

Rannohana OOOOXX

Due to the rules,

XiaoTan wins the penalty shoot-out 6-4.

(For the record, Rannohana had Italy lined up to take his next kick...)

Achiyama 1-2 Andonishiki

XiaoTan scored it correctly. Note to Achiyama - a draw does not break a chain - unless it is an ® team.

Plate final

XiaoTan vs Andonishiki

Battle for 7th place

Cup Semifinals

Jakusotsu vs Asashosakari

I disagree with both Andonishiki and Achiyama, so I will do their match in a little more detail (and it is a little complicated)....

In normal time...

In first slot both have their © teams in 'Extra Time' - but as that 'time slot' was a draw for both, they cancel each other out. (However, with the proposed revised rules for future tournaments, Asashosakari would have scored a goal, as his © team actually played extra time, whereas Jakusotsu's didn't.)

Asashosakari (Germany 1st) has his chain broken on 2nd slot. But with a string of Spain draws, Jakusotsu cannot capitalise. Jakusotsu's chain is broken on 5th slot with Germany 1st.

So 0-0 in normal time.

Extra time starts from the 6th slot onwards....

Jakusotsu scores a goal with Germany 2nd in his 6th! Is this his day? No, because Asashosakari scores immediately in the 7th slot with Germany 2nd too! (Jakusotsu's keeper is finally beaten!)

Jakusotsu had Italy 2nd in his 7th slot, so his chain is broken (if only he had put Italy 1st in 7th, instead of 8th... ;-)).

Asashosakari has nothing left in the tank, so the score after extra time is 1-1!

A penalty shoot-out is required....

Okay, I have the Thai coin. Heads for Jakusotsu, Tails for Asashosakari....

Tails!

Asashosakari will take the first penalty....

Asashosakari ?????

Jakusotsu ?????

Asashosakari has.....

Germany! It's in!

Asashosakari O????

Jakusotsu ?????

Jakusotsu replies with.... Spain! He takes an early one-penalty lead!

Asashosakari O????

Jakusotsu OO???

Asashosakari responds with....

Spain! He retakes the lead.

Asashosakari OOO??

Jakusotsu OO???

Okay, back to Jakusotsu....

Germany! The scores are level...

Asashosakari OOO??

Jakusotsu OOO??

Asashosakari steps up again with Portugal! That is one more for him....

Asashosakari OOOOX

Jakusotsu OOO??

Jakusotsu's next kick could win it for him, lose it for him, or take us to sudden death....

It is.....

Portugal!

Asashosakari OOOOX

Jakusotsu OOOOX

Okay, sudden death.

Asahsoakari has....

Italy! Two penalties! Surely he has won it?!

Asashosakari OOOOXOO

Jakusotsu OOOOX?

Jakusotsu has....

.

.

.

.

.

.

Italy too! (Yes, these two both also correctly predicted all four semifinalists.)

Asashosakari OOOOXOO

Jakusotsu OOOOXOO

Back to level pegging....

Okay, to save time, Asashosakari (France, England, Czech Rep, Greece) and Jakusotsu (England, Czech Rep, Greece, France) both miss their next four penalties....

Asashosakari OOOOXOOXXXX

Jakusotsu OOOOXOOXXXX

So with all eleven players having taken their initial penalties, we go back to the first kickers again....

Asashosakari has Germany! (No surprise there ;-))

Asashosakari OOOOXOOXXXXO

Jakusotsu OOOOXOOXXXX?

Fabregas steps up for Jakusotsu....

Spain!

It was so well taken, it is worth two penalties...

Asashosakari OOOOXOOXXXXO

Jakusotsu OOOOXOOXXXXOO

Jakusotsu wins the shoot out 8-7 (by virtue of having less faith in his country's football team than his opponent!).

Chabonowaka vs Kintamayama

I am afraid I disagree (and this bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon is going down rather rapidly, so I might be wrong...) with the referee's result. So this one is done in some detail too....

Chabonowaka makes good use of his Spain © team to score a goal in the first slot. Kintamayama had Germany 1st, so his chain is broken. In the second slot.... Chabonowaka had Germany 1st (L) and Kintamayama had Italy 2nd (L). So Chabonowaka's chain remains unbroken. Chabonowaka scores a 2nd goal with Germany 2nd in 3rd slot! He then scores a third goal with Italy 1st in the 6th slot! But his chain is then broken with Italy 2nd in the 7th slot.

So the final score.....

Chabonowaka 3-0 Kintamayama

Cup Final

Jakusotsu vs Chabonowaka - I think (before updating the table) this is the match between the highest scorer of goals (Chabonowaka) against the best goalkeeper (Jakusotsu) for this tournament. Will defence or offence prove decisive?

Battle for 3rd place

Asashosakari vs Kintamayama (two sumo games behemoths!)

Okay, for the last set of matches, every referee will get one 'trophy' decider, plus a 'consolation' match...

So, the referee for the Cup final will also get the 15th vs 16th match (well, there is another trophy here, as the loser will be awarded the 'wooden spoon'), the referee for the Plate final will also get the consolation match for 11th vs 12th... etc.

Obviously, I didn't get the rules and I made consistent errors in scoring, (Feeling guilty...) so I WON'T interfere with other Gyoji's scoring anymore.

Sorry, if somebody was offended. (Being thrown tomatoes at...)

Okay, using the random die* at http://www.random.org/dice/, and allocating '1' to Achiyama, '2' to Andonishiki, '3' to chabanowaka and '4' to XiaoTan, let's decide the referees....

First up.....

4

XiaoTan will referee...

Battle for 3rd place

Asashosakari vs Kintamayama

and

Saucer Final

Doitsuyama vs Kameumi

Roll the die...

6!

Roll again...

3

chabonowaka will referee...

Battle for 7th place

Rannohana vs Achiyama

and

Bowl Final

Mischashimaru vs Pitinosato

Throw the die!

1

Achiyama will referee....

Battle for 11th place

Harinezumi vs Rubensan

and

Plate Final

XiaoTan vs Andonishiki

That leaves us with...

Andonishiki who will referee....

Wooden Spoon Final

Pandaazuma vs Jejima

and

Cup Final

Jakusotsu vs Chabonowaka

*The correct singular for 'dice'.

Okay....

Final round rules.

XiaoTan made some good points.... which I mostly agree with.

But I think, (using XiaoTan's idea as a basis), that I have come up with a good an acceptable solution for the final round.

The final match (Spain vs Italy) will be divided into 5 unequal segments. (Why 5? Well, Bench Sumo is based on 10 teams, so if you have both the finalists in your squad, you will have '10 teams'.).

Why unequal?

There are usually a few minutes of injury time at the end of each half. Plus goals tend to come later rather than earlier in any half. Extra time usually does not happen. Therefore all biases are 'balanced' with more time.

The time slots are as follows:-

(If a goal is scored in 25 mins 32 seconds, that counts as 1. ... etc. Times will be the official times given in minutes.)

1. 0-25 mins

2. 26-45 mins (including injury time)

3. 46 - 70 mins

4. 71 - 90 mins (including injury time)

5. Extra Time: 91 - 120 mins (including injury time)

So, when you send your entry to your referee, please remember to indicate ®, © and (E) teams in first slot. Also please label your prediction using the numbers above. Also ® and © rules only apply for the first slot selected.

E.g.

Let's pretend Spain is my ® team....

Jejima: 1. Spain 4 ®, Spain 2, Spain 1, Spain 5, Spain 3

Comment: I hope all players will make a comment. At the very least, whether they enjoyed this game (or found it a chore), so will (likely - or not) play again for the (possible) Bench World Cup 2014.

Drone rules for the final match....

Hopefully nobody will drone, but just in case....

If the drone has no teams left - then that is easy (but such players are still requested to make 'an entry', even though it is just a comment,) - you can figure out the line-up for yourself ;-)

If the drone only has one team left in his squad (either Italy or Spain), then the line-up is done in the order of time:

e.g.

Drone: 1. Spain 1, 2. Spain 2, 3. Spain 3, 4. Spain 4, 5. Spain 5

If the drone has both teams (so Italy and Spain), then check to see which of these teams featured earlier in any format (1st, 2nd or ET) in their semifinal line-ups. Let's say it was Spain.

Then arrange the line-up as follows:-

Drone: 1. Spain 1, 2. Spain 2, 3. Spain 3, 4. Spain 4, 5. Spain 5, 6. Italy 1, 7. Italy 2, 8. Italy 3, 9. Italy 4, 10. Italy 5

I hope this is clear.
