Mark.Buckton 68 Posted April 29, 2012 (edited) Sasanishiki - give me your sumo book and I'll gladly edit it for you! For a small fee! make sure you do it mind. :-D Don't say it is being done, on its way and not do it! Not good form that. Mark.Buckton 68 Posted April 29, 2012 Sasanishiki - give me your sumo book and I'll gladly edit it for you! For a small fee! Did I miss something here? I thought it was Sasanishiki who was complaining about lack of editing in someone else's book. Orion yes you missed a few things there Doreen.
Sotonokuni 8 Posted April 29, 2012 Buy the whole book - for 3 measly dollars - and I will respond to criticism. Read a free preview - I. E. 5 per cent of it - and I will duly ignore. As for Orion - I will gladly edit your book too. I will particularly enjoy the section where you debate whether Konishiki will become Ozeki!
Sotonokuni 8 Posted April 29, 2012 http://www.goodreads.com/author_blog_posts/2334106-sumo-aggression The shark feat will end with the achiever victorious. This is what I write before today's events unfolded. How right I am!
Sotonokuni 8 Posted April 29, 2012 Sorry - iPhones have stupid predictive text! I wanted to type about shark fest, not shark feat. Anyway, the fact remains: Chris Gould has written the first and second sumo ebook. A host of people are jealous and have decided to trash him. The magnanimous Mark Buckton has decided to defend him - thanks Mark. And the baser tendencies of the sumo community to heap manure on anyone who chooses to release a book - or two - have been exposed once again. A good day for me! Think I'll write another book now! Kintamayama 47,171 Posted April 29, 2012 (edited) The sumo community? Have I been missing something all these years? Mark, you must bring me up to date-sounds juicy. "The battles within are arguably more exciting than the fights in the sumo ring!" says Mr.Gould. Can someone please elaborate? there are actual sumo book writers at each other's throats? "That's why I haven't even promoted my sumo books on the forums: they would be bazookad (literally) before even being read!" Really?? Why and by whom? I for one would be plenty interested to know of every book about sumo ever written. Edited April 29, 2012 by Kintamayama

I doubt anyone here has any issue of your promoting your books here. Unless I'm really naive and don't know what really goes on behind the scenes, which probably is the case.. Sotonokuni 8 Posted April 29, 2012 (edited) Oh, I love a good Sunday evening ding-dong. Haven't had too many of those since fighting my wife over whether to turn on the heater in winter or save money. Fay - how lovely of you to attack me after I spent so much time trying to be friendly to you whe you occupied the room next door to me in January 2008. I contribute nothing? I pay in excess of $30000 maybe - I lose count - trying to get closer to sumo, give up my job, write 30 issues of Sumo Fan Magazine for free, change my whole life to live closer to Japan, marry a Japanese, live in the countryside.... what do you ever do? You don't speak any Japanese, you merely attach yourself to Kakuryu because he speaks English and when he's not around you get a translator to hold your hand wherever you go. Why do I even reply to your message? If I mention the words ハリセンボン, 五木ひろし, 福沢ゆきち to you - do you even have a clue what I'm on about? I bet Kakuryu does! Maybe if you lived in Japan, you would too. Yawn! Maybe I should just write some Japanese for you: あなたは俺の事批判する権利ねーじゃん日本の事全然詳しくねーのに! Get your translator on it! Sotonokuni 8 Posted April 29, 2012 For those who doubt that the sumo community is vitriolic. How many times have I listened to the stories as to who got their first, who was a Johnny Come Lately, who is a fake, who's only in it for the glory, who slept with rikishi rather than interviewed them. The negative reactions as to who's an egid for not knowing how many times the shimpan change in an afternoon and the different ways in which the gyoji holds his fan. Who knows who, who has seen who train, who has given which rikishi a present. Look at the reaction to the Cuyler/ Simmons book, or the private comments about the Sharnoff book (which, despite the author's personal dislike of me, I support, by the way), or the sudden worms-out-of-the-woodwork response to the mere suggestion that I have had the gall to - heaven forsake - publish an ebook (or two) on my time of involvement with sumo. It's pathetic. And yes, I've stooped a bit in responding to it, but you get no points for smiling at everything, do you?
Fay 1,677 Posted April 29, 2012 What???? I didn't attack you at all. Talking about vitriolic, that's the most vitriolic answer I ever got at this forum... PS I bet you know exactly Kakury's english skills since 2005 where I started to support him until now and my japanese skills.
Sotonokuni 8 Posted April 29, 2012 You'll get more if you look down on me. If you love Kakuryu that much, get on a plane tomorrow, and come and see him. Or does he only matter when your day job fades into the background? Maybe I should go see him tomorrow. I only live 50 minutes away and I could actually talk to him about Japanese everyday life... which he could actually relate to!
Fay 1,677 Posted April 29, 2012 Unfortunately I have a daily job to earn all the money I spend for sumo (if it matters how much money anyone spends to be a true sumo lover, I would be glad to make an itemised account for you). I surely would love to get on a plane tomorrow cause there is not only Kakuryu I "love" and support but a lot more. Still I don't know what your problem is, As I said there is not a single post that shows jealousy because you wrote a book or two. One person dared to say that the book(s) might need some editing, that's all.
Fay 1,677 Posted April 29, 2012 Not really an answer to my question, (Yawning...) But I learned that you obviously only can speak about sumo, know about sumo, love sumo and care for rikishi you like if you live in Japan and speak more or less good japanese. Time for most of us to give up our jobs, family, friends and move to Japan B-) . Fortunately those people I know in the sumo world don't think and act so elitist at all. Quite the contrary in fact. I'd rather stay with them as it worked out fantastic until now.
Asashosakari 20,213 Posted April 29, 2012 But I learned that you obviously only can speak about sumo, know about sumo, love sumo and care for rikishi you like if you live in Japan and speak more or less good japanese. And then you won't even be properly appreciated for it by the unwashed masses out there. Just terrible.

Mark.Buckton 68 Posted April 30, 2012 Look at the reaction to the Cuyler/ Simmons book, actually think this can be solely attributed to Patricia Cuyler. She had not 'served her time' though so was dismissed in typical form: http://www.banzuke.com/99-5/msg00171.html
Mark.Buckton 68 Posted April 30, 2012 Fay, regarding the comments above by Chris - those you referred to as "vitriolic" please accept my apologies. Chris beat me to it but was of course just saying what so many think. Again, my apologies I did not get in there first. Agree or not with Chris, to all reading this, I think he has come through the SF like a typhoon. For those with no experience of a typhoon, the build-up is long and grey. Often rather humid, very sultry. When the typhoon itself arrives, depending on how close you are, all hell can break loose. Those most affected are those closest to the rain and the high winds. But, once the typhoon has passed, the skies are clear. The temperatures are usually very cool, the air is sweet. Imagine this 'typhoon' to be the comments of Chris above and those who communicated openly, such as one of the SF moderators in the shape of Otokonoyama, in this thread http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=11394&hl=%2BDoreen+%2Bhates will fully understand. Of course D did once again change tack and forget what had been said before (long timers will recall her own books being worked on - and never to appear) and is now a daily visitor to SF. Most not directly affected will enjoy the clear, fresh air that came about with Chris telling it as it is. Those most affected by his words are those, the majority will agree, needed to hear them as pointed as they may be. Pierre, I presume you will offer more noise in this regard but let's be frank, you are not and will likely never be speaking from experience. Once you do, if ever you do, you will greatly appreciate the other side. Fay, painful but true - even though you do contribute some to the SF and SFM it is limited - photos are great, but little else bar gossip. I do wonder if you will be at Kaio's retirement being the 'official licence' holder of the Tomozuna HP. (Saw him yesterday BTW - jolly chap). Howard, saw your mail last night - deleted it without opening it. Let's just hope you are being more honest with Katrina in your contributions to her project than you were elsewhere when your e-mail suddenly stopped working as deadlines neared. Glad it seems to be OK again now. Doreen - the world is changing. Yes you once ruled the roost of British folk covering sumo but all those back-stabbing SML fights with all the other ladies rather long in the tooth insulting each other, soon thereafter best of friends, back in venom mode, best buddies again et al, is and always was, boring. It was also an insult to other British folk the world over when you posted what you did regarding 9/11!! Your self appointed Queen of Sumo title has not been true for some years now as you well know. KTO was never more than a regional mag and if I am not wrong that was about as good as it ever got, no? Oh, and I don't count a mag that doesn't send out its issues whilst taking payments for such. Please please don't forget, modern day editors, including at KTO asked me to proof / contribute to your your pieces on more than one occasion when you pitched. I never knew you had a gig going, never tried to get in on one. People came to me. And, according to one ed in a Tokyo based publication, you were like a volcano going off when you heard and he had to visit your office to calm you down. So, to all here on SF now, let's be nice about the passing of the baton. We can all say bad things. What is the point? None of us are getting any younger - so why not encourage the new folk to learn more rather than disparage them, insult them, and to rudely ask if they are after something for nothing? Remember that old Kenyan proverb - the world was not given to you by your parents. It was lent to you by your children. Otokonoyama - a final message to you - perhaps when censoring (editors edit for clarity, censors remove things they do no like and offer no explanations) posts, perhaps have the manners to explain to that person - something most 'editors' do anyway. Sotonokuni 8 Posted April 30, 2012 I seem to have had some comments deleted, including the one about my retirement from the sumo forum. Faye, if you want to have the right to accuse me of doing nothing for sumo, do what I did: give up your job, your way of life, and come to Japan, do the daily grind here, immerse yourself in the culture and make this your home for the rest of your life. And then still have the wherewithal to write intelligently about European culture, politics, movies and all the other non-sumo things from which I make my living. Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted April 30, 2012 Let's all take a little time to relax and think things over. Sotonokuni, no posts you made have been deleted. I did replace your use of お前 with あなた in post #12, and recorded my reason for the edit in the post itself, along with the expanded explanation in the warning you received. That was the only edit I made. I see no other edits or deletions made to any of your posts. Mark, it would be better if you dealt with your personal grievances - you know - personally. Please reacquaint yourself with the personal messenger function on Sumo Forum, or use private email. I've locked this topic until the moderating team and the administration have a chance to discuss recent developments and decide what should be done.
