Kintamayama 47,178 Posted January 6, 2004 (edited) Futagoyama Oyakata, who missed his duties in Kyushu due to illness and hasn't been seen in public for a while, appeared at today's new recruits' checkups. Apparently, he has been hospitalized with blood circulation problems in his leg. A side effect of the medicine he took is a "mouth ulcer", which is hampering his speech. He announced his intent to participate in all duties for Hatsu-basho, and that he is turning over the Heya to Takanohana, after Hatsu. The heya will be known as Takanohana-beya, of course, and Futagoyama will stay on as one of the Oyakatas. He also intends to carry on with his various Kyokai duties. Reporters say, except for the speech problem, Futagoyama Oyakata was looking healthy. Edited January 6, 2004 by Kintamayama
Fujisan 533 Posted January 6, 2004 That sounds like a historic event, how long was the heya known as Futagoyama Beya?

Yoavoshimaru 0 Posted January 6, 2004 Stomatitis, eh? Well, I hope his leg, mouth, and anything else heals completely. His heya is in good hands, and he should have slightly less stress now knowing that.
Oshirokita 198 Posted January 7, 2004 IIRC, this means that Takanonami will now be listed under his third heya if he doesn't retire before Takanohana takes over. He began in Fujishima-beya which merged into Futagoyama-beya and is now changing its name to Takanohana-beya. Does anyone know if there are any current rikishi with as many (or more) heya changes? - Oshirokita, from the Great White North
Zuikakuyama 1 Posted January 7, 2004 Does this mean Futagoyama, one of the most venerable heyas, will now go out of existence? If so I don't like it at all, if just to give takanohana his own heya name. In any case, the name Futagoyama suits him really well. In means twin sons mountain, and is appropriate given the taka-waka brothers.

If so I don't like it at all, if just to give takanohana his own heya name. It doesn't really go out of existence, at least not literally, the name just disappears while Takanohana runs the heya. When Taka retires, the Futogoyama name will reappear. For now, it's kaput...
Asashosakari 20,223 Posted January 7, 2004 (edited) Does this mean Futagoyama, one of the most venerable heyas, will now go out of existence? If so I don't like it at all, if just to give takanohana his own heya name. As I understand it, the heya traditionally carries the name of its shisho, so even if Takanohana wanted, he can't take over the current heya and still keep it named Futagoyama-beya. That is, short of giving up his one-generation toshiyori and switching his Yamahibiki share (assuming he still owns that) with his father's Futagoyama share, which I doubt either would be terribly thrilled to do. It doesn't really go out of existence, at least not literally, the name just disappears while Takanohana runs the heya. When Taka retires, the Futogoyama name will reappear. For now, it's kaput... Not necessarily...Takanonami or somebody else could well end up with the Futagoyama toshiyori and open a new heya under that name while Takanohana-beya still exists. Sorry, just nitpicking. (Whatever above, it is funny...) Edited January 7, 2004 by Asashosakari
