Had a 7-0 at high Sandanme last time, but is a big kid and born 1984 if I remember correctly, so still an interesting start. The next european hope Kotooshu is finally up there and is surrounded by many oldtimers (including 36-year-old ex-Juryo Tochitenko and even older Kotokanyu who refuses to give up). Tokitenku and Ama will have to try again for Juryo, but they should only need a simply kachi-koshi. Short stuff Toyonoshima is also once again in range. Not to forget Sumiya, who as Saigo was youngest sekitori when first coming up in Juryo many years ago. And Tamaasuka who has been lingering in Makushita for so long that no one really remembers him any longer, but he is still only 20... And... And... Should be an interesting top-Makushita in any case (Clapping wildly...) Edited December 23, 2003 by Yubiquitoyama

Kashunowaka 300 Posted December 23, 2003 Nice to see Hayateumi back in makuuchi! I thought that Toyozakura would take the M17E slot. Kokkai was promoted slightly lower than I thought (I had him at M9E). Still, it will be quite impressive if he manages kachi-koshi from M10W. The field between M6 and M10 looks quite strong this time, don't you think? And below him is Asasekiryu, Takanowaka and Buyuzan among others. Time for Kakizoe to show what he is made of! It is very likely that he will face sanyaku for the first time in the upcoming basho.
Mark Buckton 1 Posted December 24, 2003 (edited) For those interested, a little of the human side to add to the soon to start discussions and opinions about how the NSK got it wrong etc etc in the current banzuke. 4.10 am - alarm and up gets ANR. A shower, a cup of coffee and snackette later and he's off out the door for a 1 km bike ride to the local station. Boarding the 5.10am first train ANR notices the thoroughly lifeless faces of his fellow passengers and settles down to read a TSB (bank) magazine. Changing train about 10 stops later he is stopped by a South African in need of linguistic assistance having bought the wrong ticket for his destination and unable to explain such to station staff. Five minutes later and with his good deed done for the day (Sign of approval) , ANR boards the train (coincidentally alongside the aforementioned SA chappie) and gets off 2 stops later in Ryogoku. Walking for a couple of mins and exchanging a hearty 'ohayo gozaimasu' with the Kokugikan guard ANR joins the queue of 6 or 7 men - all Japanese - and waits 15 mins for the doors to open. At opening time, ANR's face starts to redden, he clears his throat and checks his voice and once at the front, hot on the heels of several men who ordered 600, 1000 and 340 copies of the banzuke respectively ANR, in the finest 6am on a Wednesday morning voice he can muster says 'roku mai' (6 copies) (Clapping wildly...) . The world stops, the staff look bemused and for a split second ANR feels all eyes on his. It passes, 6 copies are passed to ANR who slides away to the elastic band and and free posters table and then makes a swift exit back to the station, back to the train, back on the bicycle and back into the front door to start typing. Knackered and hungry and it is still before 7am and but minutes later Yubi-san posts a better version leaving ANR thinking - March 1st, I'm staying in bed. The moral of the story is this - leave to others what they can do better (Waving white flag...) - Yubi-san, where, if it is not too personal cometh from your info. Est-ce-que vous over 60 years of age because at 33 I think I was the youngest chap at the Kokugikan by far - and it cost about 1000 yen to get there and back. Asashosakari 20,223 Posted December 24, 2003 Thanks for posting the new banzuke, guys. (Applauding...) I wish I could blame the non-existent third Komusubi for my terrible GTB result (40 points, if I counted correctly)...but even if I'd moved him to M01e and everybody else down one slot in my guess, it would have been only 40 points. (Laughing...) I guess I just sucked this time around... Some interesting movements in Juryo, to be sure, with Nakao and Bushuyama getting promoted despite their 7-8's, and Daimanazuru at J10w (I fully expected him to grab a J14 slot, oh well). Interesting placement for Kokkai too...curiously enough I had him in the same spot as Kashunowaka did. Unbelievable that the Kyokai didn't see it our way. :-D And even though I like Hayateumi, I'm pretty disappointed that they dropped Toyozakura down to Juryo. (Eh?) I hope he can make it back up quickly. Okay, enough Christmas morning banzuke ramblings for now. B-) Oh, one more thing...Harunoyama shin-nyumaku in Haru 2004! (Punk rocker...) Naganoyama 6,024 Posted December 24, 2003 Sadly here in UK, we are not up when the early birds are queuing at the Kokugikan. The worms are already canned on the NSK site by the time we do get up and no need to squint at Kanji for the sekitori ranks at least. (I have a little program which I use to disintangle the names for makushita and below, but it reads the hiragana, not the kanji.) I am thoroughly impressed by Yubiquitoyama and Adachinoryu's brilliant kanji-reading efforts. (And quite jealous of your prodigious skills) (Applauding...) (Punk rocker...) Tenkashoryu 0 Posted December 24, 2003 Hey guys, check the banzuke from nihon sumo kyokai. And interestingly enough, a new sekitori Hakuho in Juryo is so damn light. (Applauding...) Just 80 kg, can you believe that! (Punk rocker...) Probably the lightest guy I ever seen in Juryo. I don't know how this guy compete against others, and how he is gonna do in Juryo in this coming basho. I bet he must strong in spite of his light weight. Tenkashoryu 0 Posted December 24, 2003 oh my god, he is the youngest one too, 1985. (Punk rocker...) I am just totally impressed with him.

Don't get me wrong, I hope for a quick return for Toyozakura too. (Applauding...) But don't ask me who I would rather see demoted ... Hayateumi showed great potential in 2000 before he was injured, so I have always felt that he really belongs in the upper half of makuuchi. I hope he doesn't fall straight back to juryo this time. Judging from his picture, he's clearly a pretty small guy, but I wouldn't give too much on the 80 kg figure yet...it's not unusual for Juryo debutants to have totally wrong weight entries, probably because the Kyokai updates the data for Makushita and below very rarely. (For example, Here's Hidenokuni who was in Juryo earlier this year. Listed at 103 kg, but that's obviously wrong, just by looking at his image.)

Mark Buckton 1 Posted December 24, 2003 Cool story ANR (Punk rocker...) Why did you need six copies? Why did those others need 1000/340/610 copies? Yoavoshimaru-san Usually in eastern Tokyo taxis, some traditional businesses and restaurants (especially those near the Kokugikan) give copies to customers. Thus the big numbers. Yubiquitoyama 4 Posted December 24, 2003 I just noticed (eh, read on the German Sumo Forum after which I checked and noticed...) that Nakao and Bushuyama both actually got promoted despite make-koshi... Doesn't happen every day in sekitoriland (Punk rocker...)
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted December 26, 2003 Nakao and Bushuyama both actually got promoted despite make-koshi... Absolutely promoted, relatively stayed the same so this occurence didn't violate the three banzuke rules. Admittedly rare. I had hoped Bench Sumo banzuke committee would have followed the same principle as kyokai since I had "an own cow in the ditch" with this one. ;-)
Gernobono 467 Posted December 26, 2003 .... a new sekitori Hakuho in Juryo is so damn light. Just 80 kg, .... hakuho not only seems to have gained (or lost to nsk-standards) weight...he also must have shrunken...the sumo-almanach for 2003 has him at 185,5cm and 89,5kg so maybe the nsk-site has his weight and height from his maezumo-times
