Who knows this kesho mawashi?

Recommended Posts

in a bashoprogram i came across a kesho mawashi which shows a sign designed to promote austrian products by the austrian economic chamber (i have this name from their internetside) ...it is a big "A" for austria.....the rikishi wearing this kesho is sadanoumi.....i am not sure but i think i saw this one or a similar one on another rikishi not too long ago....does anyone have an idea who could be the sekitori i mean? (not sadanoumi, but more recently)

here is the picture

Sadanoumi.jpg

maybe the words at the bottom of the kesho mawasho give a hint where to look for....

i can read the katakana, but not the kanji....can anyone help me there?

I recognise the Mawashi from my C4 book of sumo which was published in 1988/9,would it be Sadanoumi? It looks like the same Rikishi.

The writing is: オーストリヤ通商代表部 or "Ōsutoriya Tsūshōdaihyōbu" which means "Austrian Commercial Agency", so this doesn't look like it is really helpful, since this is just stating the sponsor of the mawashi as is custom. Btw, Ōsutoriya does look a slightly bit curious to me as Austria (no, not what you might think...). I learnt it to be Ōsutoria, but then again, there are no really fixed rules for writing foreign words in Katakana.

@fujisan

thanks for the hint...i found the picture in den C4-Book....but the rikishi there also is sadanoumi

@doitsuyama

thanks, i was hoping that it names a company which gave this keshomawashi...

btw: i never saw oosutoria written with a "-ya" at the end...

I thought it was but there was no identification to go with the picture-Can anyone post the picture here? I would be interested in putting names to the other rikishi in the picture.

Hm. This is NOT easy, even taking to old pictures. The second one from the left is Daijuyama, or so I think. The one on the left COULD be Kirinji, but am not at all sure about that.

the remark with mitoizumi brought up the idea to compare thes keshomawashi (should have thought of that myself)...

the research shows that the rikishi left of sadanoumi (from our viewpoint) is fujinokawa then daijuyama (yubi got that right)

i could not find the most left one...i tried to compare banzuke where those 3 guys were in the same division ....fujinokawa was the one with least appearances as sekitori but i failed....

so the one on the left of the picture still is anonymous...

kotoseiyas bells rang perfectly tuned....the one in the background is mitoizumi...at least it is his keshomawashi :-D

Well, the more I see the picture, the more sure I am it is Kirinji. It's a pity it's so hard to verify.

Anyway, there should be no doubt the guy in the back IS Mitoizumi. He probably liked that kesho for whatever reason though, since he had it often even when coming up to retirement.

I think it's Aki 1986 - M9w Sadanoumi, M8w Fujinokawa, M7w Daijuyama. They were similarly close (and in the same order) in Nagoya 1986, but much higher on the banzuke, which wouldn't seem to fit with their position on the dohyo during the dohyo-iri.

Anyway, Kirinji was M6w during Aki 1986, so while it's not guaranteed, I suppose it's at least very likely that he is the rikishi to the left of Daijuyama.

On the original question up top - nothing I found in a pair of Japanese books on the subject / photos of lots etc.

However, for those into quizzes / research etc 2 questions:

Which sekitori have, in the past worn kesho mawashi featuring

a. Paramount Pictures (written in English)

b. A penguin one.

Just one hint - both are now dead.

This quiz is WAY above the usual difficulty level of sumo quizzes (Ranting...)

Anyway, stubborn as I am, I tried to find the answer to this one, and I actually DID find someone with a penguin kesho, ex-M04 Ichiminato, but unfortunately he doesn't fill your other criteria (he retired 1921)... (Laughing...)

Yubi-san,

(and all others reading this of course)

The answer I have is former komusubi Shikainami who retire in Taisho 6 (Hatsu) making me daft because I was looking at his date of death and mistakenly referred to that in the post above.

ANR (Blushing...)

whose next similar question will be easier!

Also, Ichiminato's kesho is the same one as Shikainami - a hand me down perhaps? Don't mean similar - I mean the same when looking at pictures of both and the fact that when the komusubi retired, the very same basho was the M04's first at the top level.

Coincidence?

I'm impressed by the quality of your reference material, messieurs Yubi & Adachi. Perhaps I should invest in some sumo literature.

Guess how many sumo books there are in my local town library? (Answer: one badly outdated... (Joel Sackett's Rikishi: The Men of Sumo)) Now, let's see... Amazon of Japan... Overly complicated. I'll go there to buy them physically. (Punk rocker...)
