How does Baruto look?

Recommended Posts

For those that have seen him, how does his sumo look? Is it pretty much the same as his last juryo basho where he kind of slept walk through a million yorikiri? Does he look tentative?

anyone? day 4, and hes already the sole leader.

But im curious to see how he looks..

I've seen two of his yorikiri wins and he looks powerful enough for those Juryo guys. Which proves again that even 1.5-legged Baruto is not just a Juryo level wrestler. It's hard to predict though how he would look compared to Makuuchi rikishis, we'll just have to see.

In those two matches (seen via Info-sumo videos) his tachi-ai was quite high against Daimanazuru on day 2 but much better against Kitataiki on day 3.

As quoted in Estonian media he has lost about 10 kg. His injured left leg looks much stronger, because he used it yesterday to finish off Kitataiki.

I'm looking forward to see his uwatenage win from todays match, his first uwatenage since last year's Kyushu. Of course it would be nice to read some opinions from the guys in Tokyo. :)

On Day 4 he looked very patient. He didn't rush forward, but he wasn't pushed back at first either. Instead he struggled to get the grip that he wanted. It looked as if he might have waited too long when he got pushed to the edge. Then he made a good strong throw for the win. Well done! ;-)

Today it was almost tsuridashi win for Baruto :-) Mokonami managed to stay on the dohyo, but yorikiri was soon made by the big Estonian. Tachi-ai is still a concern though.

Tachi-ai is still a concern though.

I think so too. He appears to be moving intentionally slow. He must be protecting the knee, by avoiding having to go into a defensive stance. Yet he's still stong enough to move forward. At his current rank this style shouldn't be a problem. I hope his condition has improved and he is able to take more chances when he is at a higher rank next basho.

For now at least, slow and steady wins the race!

Baruto looked like a street thug in his bout with Mokonami today.

Sadly a pattern is emerging. Baruto winning juryo despite an injured knee through sheer size and weight, but damaging it even more every time he moves up to makuuchi. Just watching his slow and careful sumo this time you just know there is no way he could get away with that in the higher division. (Holiday feeling...)

I've watched all of Baruto's torikumi of this basho. I agree with Nishi-san.

He is good enough to win in Juryo, but not in Makuuchi.

Too fast of a rise and facing the top guys without proper technique.

Day 5, Baruto got right grip(migi-uwate) over the opponent's sholder. (katagoshi-no-uwate)

This is one of his bad habits. He still does it.

He does not have to win all. He must do sumo in proper way this basho.

I really like Baruto.

Baruto doing what he does best

James Hardy / Daily Yomiuri Sportswriter

In what is becoming a regular occurrence, Estonian giant Baruto is blazing an unchallenged path through the juryo division. The No. 9 ranked wrestler beat No. 6 Mokonami on Thursday at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament to improve to 5-0, the only unbeaten record in the second tier.

Baruto is back in juryo following a recurrence of his knee injury in July that forced his withdrawal after only two days. "My leg is still not so good," said the 22-year-old, who was characteristically laid-back about his chances of a third juryo title. "We'll just have to see how it goes tomorrow."

In an attempt to reduce the stress on his troublesome knee, Baruto has lost 10 kilograms, but still weighs in at 172 kg. "I lost most of it up here," he joked, pointing to his head. "I think I need to lose another 5 kilograms to be at my best fighting weight."

Baruto said the injury had changed his fighting style. "My start is still too slow. I must do more tsuppari [thrusting]--it's not my style, but there you are."

Another forward moving victory for baruto, Oshidashi. As a baruto fan i almost want him to lose a few, or perhaps even go kyujo after 9 victories. I dont want to see him facing makuuchi guys until next year.

Maybe the perfect solution is to take every second basho off. That is: He wins the juryo yusho, doesn't appear in the next (makuuchi) basho, and then returns four months later for another juryo yusho. He could still earn a good living while giving his knee a chance to mend. After an unprecedented fourth or fifth juryo yusho he'd be in perfect shape for makuuchi in 2009.

Just as written in this article there was tsuppari attack against Koryu today. Harite was slow, but effective. At least he has learned something that has been reccomended to him :)

Could I just take this opportunity to make a terrible joke using the topic title?

Question: How does Baruto look?

Answer: With his eyes!

Do I win a prize?

10-0 another yorikiri victory. This and his last juryo basho he has to have the record for yorikiri victories in 2 juryo bashos. lol.

Could a second zensho yusho be on the horizon?(now that ive said that, watch him lose tomorrow)

It would be.

I suppose the thinking being that anyone who's good enough to go zensho yusho in juryo will never be back there again under normal circumstances :)

If Bart will make it 15-0 then he would be the first ever rikishi to win 2 zensho yusho in juryo, I think.

He should already be rikishi with the highest win percentage in juryo (51-5-14) and Aki basho ain't over yet!

Bart has never went make-koshi without suffering somekind of injury or being hospitalized for other reasons.

He's record without bashos where he went kyujo is 128-28 in total (from what 47-9 in lower divisions, 51-4 in juryo and 30-15 in makuuchi) and counting.

Every rikishi who got zensho yusho in juryo have made it at least to ozeki .. will he be first not to?
