Fujisan 535 Posted July 23, 2007 I read the end stood in Asdas(Walmart) Sorry couldn't resist it. I haven't read a story book since I left school but I am thinking about buying it.
sekihiryu 51 Posted July 23, 2007 no I read it - I am unashamed to say so, I have read all the series. They are good books -they are not the best selling books in the world for nothing. I read all sorts of books from Rugby biographies to History books. If its good I will read it and these books are great. I never intended reading them but one blizzardy day in Nagano at my friends house I picked up the first one and read it as there was nothing to do and I was hooked -read the first one in half a day and immediately started the second. Fukurou 534 Posted July 23, 2007 (edited) Forgive me if I'm a bit slow but is this thread a piss-take or are you guys seriously reading that stuff? They're actually fairly entertaining to read. And like Charles M. Shultz's "Peanuts" comics and cartoons, they're most definitely not "just for kids". OTOH, if you don't read for enjoyment, then you probably would not be interested, regardless of what anyone else may say. Fujisan 535 Posted July 24, 2007 Forgive me if I'm a bit slow but is this thread a piss-take or are you guys seriously reading that stuff? Whats wrong with Harry potter? Dont give me the kids stuff nonsence, didn't you say you had a collection of comics in Ireland or have you "grown out of it?"
Fujisan 535 Posted July 25, 2007 I never said it was "kids stuff". I don't like it because it reads just like a badly written mish-mash of others ideas. Just because someting is popular doesn't make it good. The last book is definately not kids stuff I find it hard to see how it can be translated into a childrens film. Oh well you cant please everyone.
Jakusotsu 6,392 Posted July 25, 2007 We all know Nishi isn't a sucker for fiction. Heck, he doesn't even like sumotalk! (Nodding yes...)
ilovesumo 12 Posted July 26, 2007 No time to read anything not Sumo nor study-related.
sekihiryu 51 Posted July 26, 2007 Just because something is popular doesn't make it good. Amen - how else could you explain soccer?
Shakuyaku 0 Posted July 27, 2007 Just because something is popular doesn't make it good. Amen - how else could you explain soccer? Hear hear (Laughing...) But getting back to the point, I just finished reading the book, and yes, it will not something they can make a movie for children off. Right now I'm dying to discuss the book, but noone else has finished reading it (Shaking head...) I started reading HP after my mom was given the first book by some british co-workers. She has never studied english but was suddenly thrown into a higher position at her work where she simply had to be able to communicate abroad. Thank god Swedish television doesn't dub (Shaking head...) But, she needed to expand her vocabulary and therefor some thoughtful people gave her that book, saying that the language difficulty would increase with each book. And, she loves the books. Her best comment about it was "so THIS is why you girls read these kinds of books!" (aka fantasy and sci-fi)

Sasanishiki 57 Posted July 30, 2007 I haven't read any of the series but have seen the movies. I take it from my friends who have read the books that the first two are really for children and then the books grow up alongside their readers. they get bigger and longer, more complex and darker/contemplative. My wife thinks that the last book will need an r-16 rating as a movie.
Jakusotsu 6,392 Posted July 30, 2007 My wife thinks that the last book will need an r-16 rating as a movie. The book itself is no "worse" than the previous two, and they rated the latest movie r-12 in Germany (which is generally regarded too low but doesn't cut them off from the main source of revenue, so go figure...)
