Higonoumi : a crucial basho

Recommended Posts

Higonoumi, juryo 13 for Kyushu basho, needs kachi-koshi to continue his carreer.

What do you think about this ? ( He will obtain kachi-koshi or not )

I like this rikishi because he looks like to Kaio. Come on, Higonoumi!

His face looks like ( a few ) to this one of Kaio.

The first time I've seen Higonoumi ( one year ago ), I believed that he was his brother.

So many of the veterans are retiring or are on verge of retiring this year... Very soon there be no sekitori left that were active 'before me', ie. before I started following sumo.  :-D

Of course, Kotonowaka might go on for years and years and years the way things are going. I was very surprised to find out that he's among rikishi with longest careers, 18 years of active pro-sumo in 34 years of his life! All this and much more from Kintamayama-zeki's own web-page, the 'Oldest in sumo' link.

I'm afraid, he will make Make Koshi and retire. Yes, he was able to stay in Makuuchi for an astonishing long time, considering, that he never made it into the Sanyaku-Ranks, but since dropping to Juryo he has never reached his old class.

(Waving goodbye...)

If Higonoumi fails to make kachikoshi and Hamanoshima (who is currently at Makushita 3 East) fails to return to Juryo, then Mihogasaki-beya will be without a Sekitori for the first time in many years.

I leave it to the sumo archivists among us to find out exactly how many years it has been but Higonoumi's career alone gives them a good span of time with at least one sekitori.

Other recent Mihogasaki sekitori have been Masutsuyoshi (now ms 23 west) and Torafusuyama (ms 42 west - I think he made it to Juryo once, didn't he?).

Masunobori (ms 49 east) is the only other rikishi in Makushita and in the first 100 Sandanme there are only two others so it could be a while before that heya can boast a sekitori again.

I can remember seeing Higo-zeki show some flashes of strong sumo a couple of years ago but he seems to have run out of gas. I respect rikishi who love the sport enough to struggle on in the lower divisions even when there seems little hope of a return to Makuuchi but if Higonoumi hangs it up it'll make room for some interesting new face which is also fun to watch.

As for former sekitori struggling on in the lower divisions, keep an eye on ex-Makuuchi Wakanojo (sandanme 10 east). Why would he continue down there if he didn't have some fire left in his belly? I hope he can make a return like his stable mate Gojoro. (Drinking beer...)

Higonoumi lost his 2 first bouts! Very difficult for him!
