Kintamayama 47,194 Posted April 25, 2006 9 new recruits of "normal" stature (1.73 meters, 75 kilos), including College yokozuna Shimoda, passed the first test today. 2 others, of the second degree stature (1.67 meters/67 kilos minimum) passed them as well. The test results (internal organs and playing a flute with serious dedication while trying not to think of food) will be announced on day 1 of Natsu.

Kintamayama 47,194 Posted April 25, 2006 (edited) Well, it seems we have been joined by a Japanese giant. 15 year old Fukatani(?)-深谷- 1.95 meters, 136 kilos, will be joining Tamanoi-beya. He is still growing, they say. When he finished Junior high School in March he was 1.93. When he entered the beya on April 10th, he was 1.94. today, 1.95. Tomorrow? who knows... He was 1,80 when he finished elementary school. He played baseball from 4th to 9th grade. He did do some sumo in 5th grade and even entered the National Championships, only to lose in the first round. He was planning to go to high school and hone his Sumo abilities, but was convinced by Tamanoi Oyakata to join now. Tamanoi beya already has the tallest Japanese rikishi, Makushita Yoshiazuma. "I'd like to be like Tochiazuma-zeki with his forward moving Sumo", he said. Kintamayama 47,194 Posted April 25, 2006 what does the second degree stature qualify one for?i was not aware of this It qualifies you to enter Sumo, but you have to pass additional tests (co-ordination, ball throwing, skiing, etc..) because you are too short/light. Makuuchi Toyonoshima is one of those that qualified only after doing the additional tests. Before that, if you wanted to do Sumo really seriously but didn't make the height requirements, you would have silicone implanted in your head to make you taller. It didn't make you smarter though, apparently.

Asojima 2,874 Posted April 25, 2006 College Y okozuna Shimoda-1.73 meters, 126 kilos: Expected him to be a bigger boy. He's got some serious growing to do if he wants to make it far as a sekitori.
Jakusotsu 6,390 Posted April 26, 2006 He's got some serious growing to do if he wants to make it far as a sekitori.Vertical growth doesn't seem to be an option at his age, so he's got to stick with the complementary way like Takekaze.
