Kintamayama 46,753 Posted November 21, 2004 (edited) Musouyama will receive 32,000,000 yen ($310,000) as retirement (merit) money, it was decided today. There will be no pay raise for rikishi or elders for the fourth straight year, it was obviously decided as well. Sasanishiki 57 Posted November 21, 2004 I thought it was a pseudo-pension fund provided by the Koykai from money they squirrel away. Is there some connection with money they get from kensho?
Jonosuke 28 Posted November 21, 2004 No this is not the Kensho money they were saving it for him but it comes from their general operations fund just like they've just given to those victims in the Niigata Quake. My understanding is that every sekitori gets a pension and a certain amount of "appreciation" money regardless. This Musoyama one came after their Directors meeting so it is additional to whatever he would get normally.

This Musoyama one came after their Directors meeting so it is additional to whatever he would get normally. This is what I was thinking but this is a direct contradiction to something included in a column checked by a sumo writer who told me they don't get a pension. I always thought they did (higher rankers especially so) :-/ I opt for Jonosuke's answer (Applauding...)
Asashosakari 20,134 Posted November 22, 2004 Hmm, just to clear up the terms for confused people like me...the "pension" money comes out of the stashed-away parts of kensho, while the appreciation money does not and is basically a retirement gift from the Kyokai, right? :-/ Or do both come out of the Kyokai's general funds?
