The tuna

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

A 276 kilo Bluefish tuna caught yesterday fetched 207 million yen at an auction at the Toyosu market, won by the Onodera group. Upon hearing that, Yokozuna Terunofuji rushed to a conveyor belt sushi restaurant in Omotesando to taste some of it. "It brings good luck.." he said. The fish was so large the workers couldn't get it into the kitchen, so Terunofuji took off his hakama and helped them get it in, shouting "yoisho" as if it was part of the Yokozuna dohyo-iri.. "The maguro was delicious so that was good. I felt I would be battling in the Hatsu basho," he said.

Oonosato also got to taste some of that tuna. "It was delicious," he said, smacking his lips and smiling, most probably, "I want to prepare well and do my best so that I can start the new year in a good way." He plans to further increase the pace of his preparations from the YDC soken tomorrow. He has been training doing fundamentals and did some sumo yesterday with Juryo Shirokuma and Hananoumi so far.

As usual, the tuna was provided by Nishonoseki-beya main sponsor AI koumuten, last year 120kg

this year one of 126kg, an ooma tuna from Aomori https://oma-wide.net/oomatuna/

(the reading Oma's tuna looks quite funny in German)

Terunofuji helped to carry the yokozuna class fish (tuna is tsuna in Japanese) - he said he thought of it as training

I suppose bluefin tuna doesn't normally fetch 750,000 yen per kg.  Does the restaurant actually intend to recover its cost, or is this a publicity stunt?  If there were 6,000 pieces of sushi made, that's 34,500 yen per piece, though perhaps the stuff not used for sushi would also fetch something, though probably not much.  I can't imagine spending hundreds of dollars on a single piece of sushi.

A special tsuna fish sandwich was prepared for Kotozakura and will be delivered to him if and when, or so I heard.

It is a matter of prestige. It's impossible to recover the cost of such a fish.

Ibaraki shimbun posted a video from the event for the locals, the town mayor of course was also there

2 different pieces to compare were sold for 1160 Yen, one should have been sold for 30 000 Yen as regular price, it's a New Year event like many (hatsu- ... : swimming, keiko, ... ), for good luck https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-XQrX9iOFKQ

They're auctioned so the price varies according to supply/demand, but a properly bled and flushed Atlantic bluefin carcass is always worth a small fortune at the Tokyo fish market.

This '1st catch of the year' thing is a bit like the Beaujolais Nouveau race; more a matter of prestige than economics.
