A Maegashira 10 is a sub-par rikishi in makunouchi. 26 rikishi are ranked above M10, whereas only 14 are lower in rank, making M10 rikishi by definition sub-par. Also: There is a possibility they end up with a 7-8 record, which (again) is by definition sub-par. Quite easy to comprehend.

Which was an easy to comprehend. And it isn't sub par on day 14. Is this a joke or something?
Thorbjarn 214 Posted March 27, 2022 How is anybody among the top 42 guys in a sport consider subpar in any sport that has a significant amount of athletes? This is getting ridiculous. You can prefer Wakatakakage to Takayasu or vice versa, but not one of them had an easy path to the Yusho. Same would go for Kotonowaka. This is no M17 Yusho with three senshuraku matchups in the final few days were the JSA realized how the lower rankers sneak their grubby fingers to the emperor's cup. The lower ranked Rikishi were brought up relatively early in the Basho and everyone still in the hunt had a direct matchup with each other. I would say the scheduling is unusual from a traditional perspective, but from a sports' perspective, it is fair. Whoever wins this has earned it.

This is getting ridiculous. Sub-par in makunouchi. Not ozumo in general... It's a fact that M10 is not an above average rank in makunouchi and if you go 7-8 that's not an above average score. What are you arguing for here? I really don't get it.
Thorbjarn 214 Posted March 27, 2022 That's just moving goalposts from the earlier discussion were there was no qualifier plus I would continue arguing against it. Makuuchi outside the absolute elite (Yokozuna, Ozeki, the occasional stable junior sanyaku) is a very dynamic environment. There is always future top tankers on the rise and former top rankers on the decline. Plus those who hit speed bumps on the road like injury. There had been quite a few recent examples of Rikishi around and below M10 recently who were under ranked. On the other side you will have overpromotees in the joi whose skill levels are probably around or below M10. A 10-5 from M14 can very well get you to M9, but your skill set can still be around the M14 level. I really don't understand the reasoning here, sorry. Especially since it doesn't matter in the current Basho, were the low rankers got brought up really early anyway (and faced all the available elite guys).
Godango 956 Posted March 27, 2022 Arguments aside, my little heart can't take this. God I hope Takayasu gets it, but as stated above, whoever ends up lifting the cup will have absolutely earned it.
Rocks 1,801 Posted March 27, 2022 And now Ichinojo and Tobizaru are square dancing. I've seen everything.
sumoforever 27 Posted March 27, 2022 Cheering for Takayasu after so many times getting close to the yusho. Wonder how many chances he has left to finally win a basho. Despite that, big fan of Wakatakakage and Kotonowaka, two faces of the future of sumo!

Thorbjarn 214 Posted March 27, 2022 (edited) Good win for Hoshoryu, overall a nice debute (at sanyaku) for him. Kotonowaka looked a bit frustrated, but what a great Basho for him. Edited March 27, 2022 by Thorbjarn
hakutorizakura 581 Posted March 27, 2022 No 3-man playoff unfortunately, but that was a beautiful throw by Hosh! Well done getting KK, Uncle must be happy.

The guy is getting stronger and stronger, the weight increase certainly helped. Let's see if he will be rewarded with a new highest rank (depending on what Abi does later on).

Godango 956 Posted March 27, 2022 Sigh. That's what I get for daring to dream. I hate the idea of rooting against Wakatakakage, but I guess I am.
