You can prefer Wakatakakage to Takayasu or vice versa, but not one of them had an easy path to the Yusho. Same would go for Kotonowaka. This is no M17 Yusho with three senshuraku matchups in the final few days were the JSA realized how the lower rankers sneak their grubby fingers to the emperor's cup. The lower ranked Rikishi were brought up relatively early in the Basho and everyone still in the hunt had a direct matchup with each other. I would say the scheduling is unusual from a traditional perspective, but from a sports' perspective, it is fair. Whoever wins this has earned it. 5 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Makuuchi outside the absolute elite (Yokozuna, Ozeki, the occasional stable junior sanyaku) is a very dynamic environment. There is always future top tankers on the rise and former top rankers on the decline. Plus those who hit speed bumps on the road like injury. There had been quite a few recent examples of Rikishi around and below M10 recently who were under ranked. On the other side you will have overpromotees in the joi whose skill levels are probably around or below M10. A 10-5 from M14 can very well get you to M9, but your skill set can still be around the M14 level. I really don't understand the reasoning here, sorry. Especially since it doesn't matter in the current Basho, were the low rankers got brought up really early anyway (and faced all the available elite guys). 2 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

The guy is getting stronger and stronger, the weight increase certainly helped.
