It almost has to be, but how did they get that mop into a mage?  I'd vote Toyō for Tokoyama of the Year.

Natsu 2024 performances - With Nagoya rankings

A positive basho for Narutobeya: they were above 50% wins throughout the basho, and more good news than bad news.

By division -- shikona, incoming rank, Natsu result, estimated Nagoya rank, comment (* = career high)

Makuuchi

Oshoma, M14W, 10-5, M9E*.   A tremendous start in Makuuchi; Fighting Spirit Prize

Juryo

Oshoumi, J13e, 5-10, Ms3W.  He looked dinged up; still fighting at the end; back to Makushita.

Makushita

Oshoryu, Ms39e, 2-3-2, Ms54W.  Injured on day 7.

Hoshuozan, Ms52w, 3-4, Sd2E .  Lost by mawashi techniques last three matches.

Oyamada, Ms59e, 6-1, Ms28W*. Amazing everyone; this basho’s highlight – komatasukui on day 9.

Sandanme

Murayama, Sd2w, 3-4, Sd18E.  Aaand back down again.

Kanazawa, Sd7w, 4-3, Ms57E*.  KK in 9 of 12 career basho.

Marusho, Sd15w, 4-3, Sd2W. Bouncing back up (on way back to Makushita?)

Kawamura, Sd35e, 6-1, Ms51E*. First time to Makushita for the 22-year-old.

Mukaida, Sd50e, 4-3, Sd33W.  A mirror image of his March 2022 tourney.

Oshozan, Sd84w, 5-2, Sd48W*.  Should be a career high for the longest-serving Naruto rikishi.

Jonidan

Honma, Jd15e, 4-3, Sd85E.  Third re-promotion to Sandanme.

Yamane, Jd26e, 3-4, Jd52E.

Jonokuchi

Mishima, Jk3e, 5-2, Jd50E.  First basho back after 4 tournaments out injured.

Karino, Jk13w, 5-2, Jd60E*.  His first real basho after 5 kyujo at start of his career.

Next basho: 1 Makuuchi, 0 Juryo, 5 Makushita, 6 Sandanme, 3 Jonidan, 0 Jonokuchi.

Nagoya 2024 performances - With estimated Aki rankings

Feast and famine for Narutobeya.  While spending most of the basho at >50% W/L record, they closed out poorly at 49%.

By division -- Shikona, incoming rank, Nagoya result, estimated Aki rank, comment (* = career high)

Makuuchi

Oshoma, M9E, 7-8, M9.   7-5 after 12 days, then blew a sure win against Hokutofuji, lost by leg trip to Tobizaru, and got turned around by Ichiyamamoto.   Very disappointing; hope his finger heals.

Makushita

Oshoumi, Ms3W, 5-2, J14.  Ended with two wins against Juryo opponents, lost only to 7-0 Daiseizan and 6-1 Kiryuko.  Let’s hope he sticks in Juryo.

Oyamada, Ms28W, 1-6, Ms53. Hits The Wall hard and bounces.

Kawamura, Ms51E, 1-6, Sd25.  Welcome to Makushita!  You are now leaving Makushita!  Time to regroup.

Oshoryu, Ms54W, 0-0-7, Sd34.  Kyujo.

Oshozan, Sd48W, 4-3, Sd33*.  Second career high for the veteran.

Aki 2024 performances - With expected Kyushu rankings

9/15 KK’s: Oshoma, Kanazawa, Oshozan, Oshoryu, Murayama, Mukaida, Mishima, Karino, Honma.

By division -- Shikona, incoming rank, Aki result, expected Kyushu rank, comment (* = career high)

Makuuchi

Oshoma, M9W, 10-5, M4.   More hatakikomi’s, but he looked in control, except when blown over by fast pushers.  With great success comes great responsibility; he’ll be getting some of the top-class opponents next basho.

Juryo

Oshoumi, J14W, 6-9, Ms1.  He may stick in Juryo with banzuke luck.

Makushita

Kanazawa, Ms46E, 4-3, Ms37*.  Now KK in 11 of 14 career basho.

Hoshuzan, Ms53W, 1-6, Sd23.  A total disaster; manhandled.

Marusho, Ms54E, 3-4, Sd2. Makushita isn’t big enough, so back to Sandanme he goes.

Sandanme

Oyamada, Sd1E, 3-4, Sd15. Continued troubles.  It looks like he had another awesome technique, but isamiashi means his opponent stepped out first while hauling him out.

Kawamura, Sd21W, 3-4, Sd36.

Oshozan, Sd32E, 4-3, Sd17*.  3rd straight KK and 3rd career high for the 51-basho veteran.  All 7 of his opponents had losing records, but hey! he was due.

Oshoryu, Sd34W, 5-2, Sd9.  As expected after kyujo (again), he rebounds nicely.

Murayama, Sd44E, 5-2, Sd16.  Back to his ranking in January.

Mukaida, Sd50E, 5-2, Sd22.  Extends his Sandanme streak to 27 consecutive tournaments.

Mishima, 74W, 5-2, Sd42.  Continuing his return from a 4-basho kyujo.

Jonidan

Yamane, Jd9W, 3-4, Jd35.  Continues his  “5-2, 3-4” streak.  One more 5-2 puts him in Sd.

Karino, Jd17W, 4-3, Sd88*.  3 straight KK’s.

Honma, Jd26W, 4-3, Jd6.  Turning it around.

Next basho: 1 Makuuchi, 0 Juryo, 2 Makushita, 10 Sandanme, 2 Jonidan, 0 Jonokuchi.

Worth noting that Oshoryu's defeats were against Kiyonoumi and Ieshima. Not necessarily awestriking opposition, but 6 of his opponents ended up with a KK, which is a good sign in regards to his abilities overall.

No; the last, I think, was Karino, who joined in 2023 and started back in Jonokuchi this May.

Speculation, but I wouldn't be surprised if Anzaigate was affecting their recruitment pipelines.

Yeah, it's "speculateable", but I dunno.  It could be as simple as that 15 is enough rikishi for a heya with just one coach (I have no idea how much coaching the managers do), and only good prospects would get added on.  But, as I said, that's also speculation.

Kanazawa's performance in makushita has been a pleasant surprise, and that's now 6 straight KK. He looks more fired up and confident in his matches than last year.

I haven't seen too many of his bouts recently, but I checked out day 13: his opponent tried a HNH, no problem, he turned, chased and shoved the guy out.  He looks fast for a big guy, too.

I really like him, too.  Skinny but strong, and really fast.  I saw his hikkake against ex-M16 Nionoumi on day 13 -- no muss, no fuss.  On day 9, he tried three different approaches against Ienoshima before getting him with a nice katasukashi.  The only thing he's vulnerable to is a straight-ahead blowout oshitaoshi.

13-15 Naruto-beya members experienced o-shakyo (sutra copying) to train concentration of mind and soul on the 25th at the Nara Yakushi-ji yakushiji.or.jp/en/oshakyo/. They visit the temple each year since 2019, when the temple head became acquainted with Naruto.

13 rikishi, I guess - first time for Karino
