Kyushu 2021, Nakabi (Day 8)

5 rikishi have determined their fate, including leading wallee Hokuseiho.  Atamifuji seems destined to take up his mantle unless there is a reversal of fortune among the Makushitans on the list.  Hagiwara, who is the KK leader with 8 straight, is currently out of the tournament, as is Hitoshi.  If anyone has details regarding the status of these kyujo rikishi, please add that to the comments!

Kyushu 2021, Day 12

Only five rikishi remain in limbo at 3-3.  The color contrast is stark between the top half of the wall and the bottom half.  At the bottom of the wall, Nishihara and Akisada have strung together 4 KKs while averaging 2.5 losses per basho.  The other 3-3 rikishi have similar records.  This is an interesting trend that's developing.  In another unusual development, there appear to be no new rikishi to add to The Wall this basho, unless I'm missing someone.

J12w Hokuseiho: 0-2-10 (6** KK, 39-5-29)

Ms13w Kanno: 3-3 (4 KK, 26-8)

Ms14w Atamifuji: 5-1 (6 KK, 35-6)

Ms15w Ishizaki: 3-3 (3 KK, 20-6)

Ms17w Fujiseiun: 2-4 (3 KK, 23-3)

Ms35e Hagiwara: 1-1-4 (8 KK, 39-17-6)

Sd2e Osanai: 2-4 (3 KK, 21-6)

Sd24w Fujitoshi Suguro: 5-1 (4 KK, 23-4)

Sd43e Hogasho: 1-5 (3 KK, 18-9)

Sd63w Hitoshi: 0-0-6 (2 KK, 12-2-6)

Sd72e Moji: 5-1 (4 KK, 21-6)

Sd79w Nagata 3-3 (4 KK, 18-11)

Sd81w Shunrai 4-2 (3 KK, 16-4)

Sd83w Kiryuko: 5-1 (3 KK, 17-3)

Sd95e Nobehara: 4-2 (3 KK, 15-5)

Sd95w Miyagi: 4-2 (3 KK, 15-5)

Jd12e Tatsuguchi: 3-3 (3 KK, 17-10)

Jd12w Yoshino: 3-3 (3 KK, 16-11)

Jd14e Nishihara: 4-2 (4 KK, 17-10)

Jd14w Mizuno: 2-4 (3 KK, 15-12)

Jd17w Akisada: 4-2 (4 KK, 17-10)

And down goes Ishizaki! Makushita is no joke.

Yes, and upper Makushita in particular.  I'm not sure exactly where in the Makushita ranks the "meat grinder" tends to begin.  For the current basho, it clearly extends as far down as Ms17w at the least.

Kyushu 2021, Day 14

With one day remaining, the fate of all wallees have all been decided.  In the final tally, seven of the top ten have hit the wall while ten of the remaining eleven remain on the list.  With no new additions to The Wall, these 13 will represent the lineup for Hatsu 2022.  At the bottom of the list, Yoshino and Nishihara soldier on with improbable records of 17-11, only one win more than the minimum needed for four KKs.  Akisada would join them with a final day loss, while Tatsugushi is marginally better at 18-10.  Fujitoshi will join Atamifuji as the only wallees in Makushita, while the latter will move into the promotion zone.  Notably, both are averaging only one loss per basho so far.  Most likely, all of the remaining wallees will be in Sandanme next basho.

J12w Hokuseiho: 0-2-12 (6** KK, 39-5-34)

Ms13w Kanno: 4-3 (5 KK, 27-8)

Ms15w Ishizaki: 3-4 (3 KK, 21-7)

Ms17w Fujiseiun: 2-4 (3 KK, 23-4)

Ms35e Hagiwara: 1-1-4 (8 KK, 39-17-6)

Hagiwara was missing in the Naruto end-of-basho photo; I guess he was sent home to heal.
