Kensho Hatsu 2021

Recommended Posts

100 kensho of have been canceled due to the kyujo, but with still around 1300, this basho has 200 more planned than the non-Kyushu one last time, as usual for a proper Tokyo basho. 3 new sponsors with 1 each per day. http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2021/01/10/0013996287.shtml

If it hadn't been for the Morinaga-sho, Shodai would have only collected 3 kensho today.

With all his Sanyaku scalps, M1w Daieisho is on top of the kensho list.

The real sore thumb on the list is Mitakeumi.  Despite only winning two bouts so far this tournament, he is still in second place.  He is lucky to have won both times he appeared in the final bouts of the day (i.e., days 1 & 3).  That's where the money usually is. ;-)

The first big pack for Takakeisho's account, and he's the first to get the Morinaga-sho twice this basho - it stays on him, though there were plenty of better and more important bouts

Will the Morinaga-sho ever be on a bout without Takakeisho? Tamawashi got it, but did not make it into the ranking with that. Mitakeumi takes full advantage of his 3 big ozeki wins.

Weird basho. A 3-5 guy leading the pack with the sole 8-0 guy - who beat the same 3 guys - only in 2nd place.

Mitakeumi faced all three Ozeki opponents in the final bouts of days 1, 3, and 8.  Daieisho, on the there hand, faced all three Ozeki opponents in the third last bouts of days 1, 2, and 3.  This just goes to show that there is usually (if not always) more kensho available in final bouts than in earlier bouts.  Moreover, when Takakeisho was still a tsuna-hopeful, sponsors gravitated towards him.  The purse on his day 1 bout was the biggest we've seen this tournament (i.e., 39).

Essentially, Mitakeumi was lucky to win against the three Ozeki, lucky to meet them in the final bouts of the day, and even luckier to meet Takakeisho on the first day of this particular tournament!

What a shamefull system.
Kensho just putting on last bout without any considerations. :(
Big shame on the heads of these promiscuous sponsors...

Morinaga-sho and double proper pack for Endo: an Endo+Takakeisho pack is big also in an earlier bout - Asanoyama likewise had just 24 in the last bout. The race is wide open now.

The Morinaga-sho is open for all now, today Shodai got it with his (relatively) big pack from Endo. Hopefully there will be some news about the redistributed kensho from the canceled bout.

What do you think happened today?  Would enough fans have known that Takakeisho was kyujo so that voting shifted to Shodai's bout?  Or did Morinaga simply make the executive decision to place their kensho on the bout with the second most votes, once they realised there would be no banner parade for Takakeisho's scheduled bout?

You select the bouts from the banzuke, so people could vote for Hakuho, even though he has no bout. Votes for bouts that don't happen simply are invalid.

There was one kensho banner paraded for Akiseyama's bout against Kotoeko on day 11.  I spotted a Hello Kitty image on the banner, and checked who the sponsor was.  It turned out to be Miyazaki Beef!  Akiseyama is a manga geek so I understand the connection with Hello Kitty.  But what's the connection between Hello Kitty and Miyazaki Beef?!!  Aren't they essentially separate corporations?  I can see Hello Kitty being used to promote snack foods, but not high-quality(?) beef!

They have several collaborations and campaigns http://www.kei.mz-ja.or.jp/miyazakigyucp2020/

That is definitely a good point.  The point I was trying to make is that from a non-Japanese point of view, cartoon cats ae fun whereas expensive beef is serious business...  But I love that that doesn't matter in Japan. ;-)
