Live broadcast from 17h-18h JST on NHK-G. Results will appear on the sumo-renmei site http://sumorenmei.moo.jp/2019/ (Edit: looks like the site stopped posting and the sumo federation let Nittaidai do the task) High school yokozuna Okuwa (Hiryu high 3rd y., 170cm, 130kg) is preparing for the event, training with older opponents. He'll have a tough start: in the first round of the prelims he's paired against student yokozuna Nakamura (Nittaidai 1st y., 193cm, 165kg), against whom he fought 2 times in high school and was completely overwhelmed (I haven't yet found that list of the pairings on the net). The last from Hiryu to make it to the zennihon was 20 years ago Isobe (Sagatsukasa), who made it there 2 times in a row as high school student - in his 2nd year he was kokutai junior champion. I found no site that posted the prelim pairings, and no live stream scheduled for the time before NHK - the usual channels will surely provide the videos. Not just Nakamura, also Asahigaoka high shusshin Dalai-kun will be taking part as first year. It almost looks like he and Choijil-kun are still taking turns where to participate - Choijil was at the student championships. But at the zennihon those with the best results during the year are qualified take part, so apparently Dalai-kun had more points at the tournaments that count for zennihon-entry-qualification - or could it be that he had made it to 3rd dan and Choijil not? A pity the winner's interview is on the NHK-G sub-channel, of which we don't have a stream. Nakamura (who made it to 3rd dan) lost to Tanioka in the best 32, Delgerbayar there as well, from Nittaidai only Dalai-kun made it to the best 16 and lost there. NHK claimed they start at the signal of the referee (shushin), but actually they start in sync as soon as both have their hands down - just like the NSK wants to have it in ozumo. The amateur igi-moushi-tate - the mono-ii equivalent - lacks the explanation to the spectators of why they made the decision. The heel of Toyodai's 2nd year Hatsuyama had to be out in the qf against Yurube from corporate sumo (from the city of Otoi-ozumo, where some here just fought earlier this week). Igarashi (Morioka city) fought against Takudai's 4th year Suguro till his bad knee got too worse to keep resisting. He couldn't stand up after he fell down flat, off the dohyo - also here no help for about a minute. Suguro lost to Tanioka in the sf. Yelshin (?) バルタグル・イェルシン (191cm, 165kg) is from Almaty and came to Japan in his 3rd year high school. Katooshu 921 Posted December 1 (edited) Ah, was hoping for Nakamura to take the triple crown. At least he only lost to the winner...... Nihon University is on a really bad streak of results in individual finals, at least for national tournaments not split in weight divisions. Since Nakashima was crowned student yokozuna in 2017, they have gone I think 0-6 or 0-7 in finals for national openweight tournaments, with several different losing finalists. Yelshin/Yersin really had his coming out year. He's obviously strong, though he's still rather clumsy and slow....he's been improving and still has a long way to go. Katooshu 921 Posted December 4 (edited) There is a lot more emotion and personality in amasumo than ozumo in my opinion. The knockout and team formats also add to the drama. I think most ozumo fans would become amasumo fans if they gave it a chance and were connected to reliable video sources. Some background on the events and the teams would probably help with engagement too, and we have great posters in this section who've been doing that. Having followed competitors in the amateurs also makes it more interesting to follow them as pros, and as John Gunning mentioned a high proportion of sekitori are coming from the college ranks and/or have competed at a high level in high school amasumo. Oortael 15 Posted December 4 As a baseball fan, I find it even more interesting to follow the young prospects and see them climb the ladder before the become established in the upper levels. And that's the case with amasumo and all the work you guys do here. My 2 favorites prospects now are Kitanowaka (aka Saito Daisuke) and Tokisakae, with an eye on Yoshii and how Toma will respond to Hakuho's coaching. Also, wouldn't it be fun if during jungyo they were doing heya vs heya tournaments for instance with teams of 1 sekitori, 1 makushita and 1 sandanme (or w/e, just to keep enough heya eligible) ? 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
