WAKATAKE 2,759 Posted May 11, 2018 Former maegashira 16 Oiwato has announced his retirement today. He sat with his oyakata Hakkaku rijicho at the press conference, expressing that he felt he had done all he could, and with injuries that just could not heal, and that he didn't think the timing would come to what it did. He also showed his gratitude to his shisho for all he had done for him. Oiwato made his debut as a makushita tsukedashi 15, but could only climb as high as maegashira 16, completing only one basho at 5-10 in the top division. He was very much an elevator rikishi between juryo and makushita, but never fell below the third highest division. For his future endeavors, he plans on working for an electronics recycling company in Kanagawa prefecture. http://sumodb.sumogames.de/Rikishi.aspx?r=5988 https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/201805110000495.html 8

Yubinhaad 11,959 Posted May 12, 2018 (edited) Sad to see another veteran call it a day, but he hung in there and gave it all he had. That surprise Makushita yusho was one of the highlights of last year for me. His danpatsu-shiki is set to take place at the Kokugikan on June 9th. A few more pictures in the box: Spoiler After graduating from Kamosuisan High School in Yamagata he attended Kinki University, where in 2003 he became collegiate Yokozuna to earn Makushita Tsukedashi status for his ozumo debut in March 2004. The following day he also helped Kinki to victory in the team competition. With stablemates/tsukebito to celebrate his Makuuchi promotion, in the 2013 Haru basho. In his kesho-mawashi from Kinki University. The last hurrah in the 2017 Natsu basho - an oshidashi win against Iwasaki (Tobizaru) to become the oldest Makushita yusho winner in the six-basho era. And finally at his intai press conference with his shisho Hakkaku-oyakata (former Yokozuna Hokutoumi). Edited May 12, 2018 by Yubinhaad 4

Katooshu 3,485 Posted June 17, 2018 (edited) Just came across this yesterday. A bit of Oiwato in his days at Kindai University, where he was one of Japan's top amateurs (you can see him becoming college yokozuna in the second clip). Same video but jumps to different times: Edited June 17, 2018 by Katooshu 2
