Kintamayama 45,974 Posted August 17, 2017 Endou left last basho midway due to an ankle injury. It appears he had endoscopic surgery at the end of July to remove loose cartilage from his left ankle and was hospitalized for two weeks as a result. He intends to train while putting emphasis on the upper part of his body, aiming to join the Aki basho. "It would be great if he could start training on banzuke announcement day, the 28th of August. I want him to gambarize towards entering Aki basho while getting treatment," said Oitekaze Oyakata. 1 5

Since he had the surgery at the end of July and spent two weeks in the hospital, that means he probably has been released quite recently. His advisors apparently believe that the best way for him to recover from recently completed surgery is to start training as soon as possible. That makes no sense. This is not the latest misinformed medical advice Endo has received. He had a torn ACL which should have been repaired surgically. Instead, it was allowed to heal without surgery, thereby weakening it for a high stress activity like sumo. It's possible that his ankle problems were due to his weakened knee. Whatever the reason, his ankle had to undergo surgery. Removing loose cartilage via minimally invasive surgery wouldn't appear to be that severe but if he had to stay hospitalized for two weeks afterward, it sounds as if the surgery was not exactly "minor". If Endo's advisors intentionally want to ruin the career of a once highly promising rikishi, they so far seem to be doing an excellent job.
Kintamayama 45,974 Posted August 29, 2017 Endou was at the Rikishi- kai held at the Kokugikan today and says he doesn't know when he will be able to start training. "I have no idea if I will enter Aki or not.." he added. 1
Stein 30 Posted August 30, 2017 Well, what a terrible advice from his oyakata...I mean, he needs to take one basho at least for recovery, since he is having that surgery. Way too many rikishi are forced to compete in fear of demotion, while totally injured...
Kintamayama 45,974 Posted September 6, 2017 (edited) Looks like Endou will be entering after all. " He hasn't trained enough and he isn't moving well, but I think he will be OK entering.." said Oitekaze Oyakata. Makes a lot of sense. A kyujo means a deep drop into Juryo. I get that. But entering like this will most probably result in his pulling out early anyway, so what's the use? Why risk further injury? Many questions. Churaumi 749 Posted September 7, 2017 Endou could break his neck and his team would still get him on the dohyo. 1
