2017 East Japan University Championship

Recommended Posts

Takes place at the Kokugikan this Sunday from 9:00 - just out of curiosity, anyone from the forum planning to attend?

The federation website is sparse with information as usual, but the ticketing page has some details.

I'm a bit out of practice with amasumo stuff so I'll have to leave the details to more informed members, but in any case: The East Japan University individual championship, contested by a total of 116 rikishi in a knockout bracket, was won by Nihon University's Shinnosuke Kizaki over teammate Haruki Furukawa. In the semifinals Kizaki beat Takahiro Furukawa, also of Nihon, while the other losing semifinalist was Toyo University's Ryosuke Nakajima.

Stuff that's still within my competency remit - the results of the team competition. (Note: I'm largely leaving off descriptors such as University, School or Academy in the team names.)

All results via the Japan Sumo Federation.

So Toyo win another tournament then? Nice to see the Furukawa twins still doing well

Anyone know if the Kizaki who won is related to makushita Shinji Kizaki, who also attended Nihon?

Thanks for that. The passion shown in amateur sumo can be a nice change from the staid reactions of ozumo.

Does this have the highest status/prestige of the non-MsTD granting tournaments?
