Akinomaki 41,182 Posted August 8, 2017 (edited) Asahi shimbun sticks to spider sumo and reports about the 67th National Jorougumo-sumo tournament: 45 spider oyakata had their deshi fight: 15 makuuchi, 18 juryo and 12 in the tourist division. Actually the proper classification of the sumo-spiders is Argiope amoena. Up to 20mm is juryo, above makuuchi. A stick of 55cm is the dohyo, they fight tournament style to decide the division yusho. There are 4 kimarite, eg. gappuri - getting a bite at the opponent - and yagura-otoshi - throwing the opponent off the stick. The 71st All Japan jorogumo sumo tournament 全日本女郎ぐも相撲大会 today at the Ichijo shrine in Shimanto, Kochi, an ancient tradition where the 女郎 (prostitute) spiders prostitute themselves to do sumo for their spider oyakata (no wonder sumo scenes are blocked as indecent on twitter etc. - the forum has display problems as well). The origin is said to be a play of maids of the Ichijo family about 550 years ago. - Otherwise jorogumo is a female demon 3 divisions: makuuchi (19: 2cm and above), juryo (13: below 2cm) and tourist (22), where tourist kids can rent a spider. The oyakata cheer them up like: "gambare" "kire!"
