Akinomaki 41,710 Posted August 2, 2014 Aminishiki had aggravated an old ligament damage at his left knee on day 13 in the bout against Tamawashi. He is in hospital since the day after senshuraku and concentrates on treatment the whole August, planning to leave hospital next week. He will very likely be kyujo for the Natsu jungyo. http://www.nikkansports.com/sports/sumo/news/p-sp-tp3-20140801-1343820.html
Akinomaki 41,710 Posted August 6, 2014 Kyujo for the jungyo Makuuchi: Goeido, Tochiozan, Aminishiki, Homasho, Chiyootori, Azumaryu, Wakanosato Juryo: Masunoyama, Chiyonokuni, Kizenryu
Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted August 7, 2014 Kyujo for the jungyo Makuuchi: Goeido, Tochiozan, Aminishiki, Homasho, Chiyootori, Azumaryu, Wakanosato Juryo: Masunoyama, Chiyonokuni, Kizenryu The Kyokai posted an updated list a short while ago, adding Kaisei to the Makuuchi kyujo list. Now a few pictures - the handwritten schedule for the jungyo, and posters for each of the events. Ishioka/Omitama, August 8th. Niigata, August 9th. Nagai, August 10th. Kami, August 11th. Akita, August 12th. After a three-day break, the jungyo concludes with a three-event swing through Hokkaido. Chitose, August 15th. Sapporo, August 16th. Kushiro, August 17th. As Asashosakari mentioned in his schedule post above, a special memorial event precedes the jungyo in Iwaki. I'm not sure if there will be any actual sumo, but there will be dohyo-iri performed on the dohyo shown in these pictures. Yobidashi Keisuke, Yohei and Rikinojo work on the top of the dohyo. Keisuke pours a little sake at the corners of the dohyo. Some locals were invited to observe the proceedings, guided by Kiyomigata-oyakata (former Maegashira Tochisakae), in the centre wearing the white t-shirt. Everyone has a sip of the sake. The dohyo is now ready for the event.

Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted August 8, 2014 Some pictures from the special event in Iwaki today. A few departure pictures outside the Kokugikan. Two of sumo's dragons celebrated their birthday today. Now the professionals took their turn - Onomatsu-beya's Wakayama and Shinohara perform shokkiri, officiated by Shikimori Kinosuke. Getting ready to take on some local kids are Kisenosato, Kotoshogiku, Endo and Fukushima native Sotairyu. Yobidashi Hideo leads in Kimura Shonosuke and Hakuho's dohyo-iri group. Akinomaki 41,710 Posted August 8, 2014 (edited) To apologize for disappointing the fans because new ozeki Goeido is absent, each jungyo location will have a demonstration of putting on the tsuna as fan service.http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20140808/sum14080819110004-n1.htmlAnother fan service: the rikishi below ozeki have to apply in advance for keiko, instead of the mass of them standing around the dohyo, blocking the view, trying to get selected as the next opponent of the winner after each keiko bout in the usual moushi-ai keiko. It will be mainly sanban-geiko (the same 2 doing 3 or the like) or groups of 3 or 4 formed (on each side) who wait for their chance. Yokozuna/ozeki keiko is separate.http://www.nikkansports.com/sports/sumo/news/f-sp-tp3-20140808-1347859.html Edited August 8, 2014 by Akinomaki
Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted August 9, 2014 Some pictures from today's jungyo event held in Ishioka, arranged as a kind of dual-event with the neighbouring city of Omitama. Yobidashi Masayuki and Soichi giving taiko performances outside. Itabanzuke on display. Takayasu was out on patrol as part of a traffic safety and crime prevention drive. Joining him was the inevitable mascot, in this case Hibari-kun of the Ibaraki Prefectural Police. Jonokuchi gyoji Kimura Kintaro received some local support at this event, as Omitama is his hometown. And here's Kimura Kintaro himself. The jungyo organising team give a pep talk to the assembled sekitori ahead of the event. Tomozuna-beya's Asahisho and Kyokutenho doing the meet-and-greet with fans outside the hall. Tenkaiho, Takarafuji and Tokushoryu doing some shiko in this all-collegiate warm-up group. While Tenkaiho was a member of the Nichidai sumo club, Takarafuji and Tokushoryu were classmates at Kinki University, where they developed a nice no-flag duet. Sokokurai also warming up. Making the announcements in the arena was Shikimori Kinosuke. Behind him is Kimura Mitsunosuke. Jungyo department director Oguruma-oyakata (former Ozeki Kotokaze) keeps an eye on the keiko session. Outside, Osunaarashi and Toyonoshima are now signing autographs and meeting the fans. Daieisho and Kyokutaisei, Juryo debutants in the Nagoya basho, have a practice bout. Shibatayama-beya stablemates Sakigake and Wakanoshima about to collide for a practice bout. Terunofuji warming up by doing squats holding a bag of salt. Osunaarashi lends his chest to an unidentified opponent. Takarafuji now lends his chest to Isegahama-beya stablemate Homarefuji. Takarafuji still in the ring, now having a practice bout with Takekaze. Ichinojo and Sotairyu are now on meet-and-greet duty outside. Jungyo deputy director Shibatayama-oyakata (former Yokozuna Onokuni) with Nishikido-oyakata (former Sekiwake Mitoizumi, standing). The two men made their ozumo debut together in the 1978 Haru basho. Harumafuji and Myogiryu chat. Takayasu and Tochinowaka have a practice bout, watched by Jokoryu. Takekaze does some push-ups against the dohyo. Hakuho has a chat with Oguruma-oyakata. And now has a chat with Tokitenku at the side of the dohyo. Harumafuji lends his chest to Takayasu. Hakuho lends his chest to Osunaarashi. Oyama-oyakata (former Maegashira Daihi) gives his sumo basics lecture, assisted by some lower division rikishi. Impersonator Akatsu-san is still around, this time taking on Kisenosato, to the amusement of Oguruma-oyakata. Kisenosato, Endo and Osunaarashi take on some local kids. Endo and friendo head towards the dohyo for the Makuuchi dohyo-iri. Kisenosato waits in the hanamichi for his bout. He is wearing a new mawashi for the first time at this event.
Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted August 13, 2014 A few more pictures and a video from the Ishioka-Omitama event. Osunaarashi and Endo chat during the keiko session. Hakuho's dohyo-iri. Harumafuji's dohyo-iri. Kakuryu's dohyo-iri. Another look at Kisenosato in his new navy blue mawashi. Satonofuji performs the yumitori-shiki. At the event in Nagai, some vintage itabanzuke from earlier jungyo were on display alongside the current one. The oldest itabanzuke dates from 1915, when Nagai-born rikishi Umekawa (later Datenoya) was in the Makuuchi division. This itabanzuke is from 1954, which saw a Dewanoumi-ichimon-only jungyo visit Nagai. 1959 itabanzuke. 1964 itabanzuke. By the way, the senior sekitori tasked with keeping an eye on the youngsters during this jungyo are Okinoumi, Kyokutenho, Toyonoshima, Kitataiki and Takekaze. News video about the event in Kami, Miyagi prefecture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Joeu51svO4 A few pictures from Akita, where some Mongolian sekitori decided to get some fresh air with a spot of yamageiko. Ichinojo and Terunofuji square off ahead of a practice bout. Watching them are Asasekiryu and Tamawashi, with Gagamaru in the background. Terunofuji gives Ichinojo a hand with his push-ups. Kakuryu signs an autograph on the mawashi belonging to a local child. Having his chonmage repaired. Tokitenku has his oicho-mage repaired. Endo meets a local. Finally, the Kyokai didn't specify which event these few pictures came from so I'll put them separately. Kotoninsei on the mike for a jinku performance. Wakayama and Shinohara perform shokkiri, joined by Shikimori Tomokazu. Hakuho is the model for a tsunashime demonstration. Satonofuji performs the yumitori-shiki. And the three Yokozuna pose for pictures with one of the organising teams.

Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted August 16, 2014 As shown in the videos above, the jungyo resumed today in Chitose, the first of three events in Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. Some pictures: The akeni are unloaded and taken into the shitaku-beya. On the right is Sendagawa-oyakata (former Komusubi Toki), supervising the process. Yobidashi Shin gives a taiko performance. Nobori outside the venue. Itabanzuke on display inside the entrance. Kyokutenho, Kyokutaisei, Endo and Myogiryu were on meet-and-greet duty at this early stage. A silence was held at noon to mark the anniversary of Japan's surrender in 1945, which heralded the end of World War Two. The silence also took place in the shitaku-beya where the rikishi were preparing for the event. The keiko begins with Makushita rikishi. Osunaarashi and Aoiyama now meeting fans outside the hall. Back in the hall, Kimura Mitsunosuke was doing the announcing. Sadanoumi and Kyokutaisei prepare for a practice bout. Born in the city of Asahikawa, Kyokutaisei is the only sekitori from Hokkaido at the moment. Myogiryu enlists Aoiyama's help to tighten his mawashi. Endo offers the chikara-mizu to Yokozuna Harumafuji. Harumafuji, Terunofuji and Gagamaru at the side of the dohyo. Stablemates Sadanofuji and Sadanoumi prepare to start a practice bout. Endo and Yoshikaze have a chat. Harumafuji is all smiles as he gives Sadanoumi a thorough workout. Chiyomaru ready to start a bout, as Yoshikaze and Gagamaru look on. Sadanoumi does squats with a 25kg bag of salt, plus a little extra 'help' from Harumafuji. This intrepid butterfly was fluttering around the dohyo during the keiko session. Amazingly, it even landed on Terunofuji's wrist as he was warming up at the side of the dohyo. Terunofuji gently caught the butterfly and escorted it safely away. Back to the dohyo now, where Chiyomaru was doing some butsugari-keiko. Jokoryu, Osunaarashi and Yoshikaze observing the session. Hakuho not quite floating like a butterfly, doing some warm-up moves. Stretching his legs. And now stretching the rubber tubing, held by his tsukebito Ishiura. At one point the tubing slipped from Hakuho's grasp, which was probably rather painful for Ishiura. Aoiyama pushes Osunaarashi out of the ring during a practice bout. Kakuryu's turn with the rubber tubing. Osunaarashi and Endo have a chat. Takayasu during a practice bout with an unnamed opponent. Takekaze gets a tsuridashi win as some local children join the rikishi on the dohyo. Shohozan stops for a photo, taken by Okinoumi. Hokkaido-born Kyokutaisei throws in a large handful of salt. Oyama-oyakata (former Maegashira Daihi) introduces his sumo basics lecture, which can be seen in one of the videos posted above. This event was performed in front of a full house.

Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted August 17, 2014 A few pictures from the penultimate event of this jungyo, held in Sapporo. The event took place in the Tsukisama Dome, home arena of the Levanga Hokkaido basketball team I believe. Outside, yobidashi Yuto gave a taiko performance. In the lobby Sokokurai, Kyokutaisei, Osunaarashi and Tamawashi were meeting the fans. A view of the arena as the keiko session begins. Makushita rikishi are first to practice, while Takarafuji and Ikioi are the first sekitori to arrive at the dohyo. Outside, Shohozan and Ikioi are now meeting the fans. Nishikigi and Kotoninsei have a practice bout, watched by Kawanari, Mankajo and Nankairiki. Takekaze, Chiyomaru, Sadanoumi and Sadanofuji wait for the dohyo to be swept before the sekitori begin their keiko. Sadanoumi and Kyokutaisei ready to start a bout. Gagamaru worked up a sweat at this event. Chiyomaru and Osunaarashi. Kyokushuho and Terunofuji. Kisenosato and Shohozan share a laugh at the side of the dohyo. Stablemates Sadanofuji and Sadanoumi have a practice bout. Kakuryu and Kyokutenho. Shohozan and Endo. Ikioi chats with tsukebito Nishikigi while waiting to head to the dohyo for his bout. Kimura Shonosuke heads towards the dohyo. After the event was over, Kyokutenho cooled down with an ice cream. Finally, gyoji Kimura Soichiro and Kimura Toyohiko pose for a picture on board the bus to the final event of the jungyo.
Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted August 19, 2014 Some more pictures from the Sapporo event. Pictures from the final event in Kushiro will follow eventually, maybe tomorrow. A cameraman for a local television station drops in for a shot of deputy jungyo director Shibatayama-oyakata (former Yokozuna Onokuni), who hails from the town of Memuro in Hokkaido. Standing behind him is Edagawa-oyakata (former Maegashira Aogiyama), a member of the jungyo team. Endo offers some chikara-mizu to Yokozuna Harumafuji. Waiting for their turn on the dohyo, from left: Chiyomaru, Sadanoumi, Sadanofuji, Shohozan, Kyokutaisei and Chiyotairyu. Gagamaru, Chiyomaru and Myogiryu. Terunofuji watches the battle of the bellies as Gagamaru and Chiyomaru have a practice bout. Kakuryu and Hakuho share a joke while warming up. Takarafuji and Takayasu have a yotsu-zumo bout. Takekaze takes on some small opponents. Okinoumi again behind the camera to take a mid-bout picture of Tokushoryu. Oyama-oyakata (former Maegashira Daihi) conducts his sumo basics course. Shibatayama-oyakata signs an autograph. Another Hokkaido-born member of the jungyo is gyoji Kimura Toyohiko, who is from Yubari and is pictured with his sister. Takamisato, who was one of the shokkiri performers for the events in Chitose and Sapporo. Following keiko, Chiyomaru snoozes while waiting for the rest of the event to start. Kimura Tamamitsu catches up on some reading. Tokushoryu also waiting in the shitaku-beya. Tochinowaka has his oicho-mage prepared by Tokomatsu. Ichifuji poses for a picture next to Takarafuji, who wears an eye-mask when trying to have a nap in the shitaku-beya. Takayasu passing the time with a kendama. Tokoyama only take care of the hair on a rikishi's head - they have to comb their chest hair themselves! (Laughing...) Back in the arena, Harumafuji was the model for the tsunashime demonstration. Osunaarashi and Chiyomaru. Hokkaido-born Kyokutaisei. Osunaarashi and Chiyomaru again, plus microphone stand. Jokoryu and Osunaarashi. A distant view of a dohyo-iri. This event was played out in front of a full house. The three sanyaku gyoji waiting to head to the dohyo to officiate some bouts. From left, Shikimori Kandayu, Kimura Tamamitsu and Kimura Tamajiro. Following the end of the event, Shikimori Shinnosuke enjoys the fresh air and sunshine of Hokkaido. Shohozan and Takayasu leave the venue following the event.
Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted August 20, 2014 Some pictures and a video from the concluding event of this summer jungyo, in Kushiro. Early arrivals waiting to get inside the venue. Itabanzuke on display in the lobby. Waiting to greet the fans are Arawashi and Kyokutaisei - Chiyoshoma (I think?) is first to arrive for a handshake. The kensho banners at this event were hand-written by some of the gyoji - Aoiyama stopped by to take a look. Outside, yobidashi Ryuji gives the yosedaiko performance. With him is Onoe-oyakata (former Komusubi Hamanoshima). On display at this event is a kesho-mawashi worn by former Maegashira Yutakayama, who went on to serve as the chairman of Kushiro's city council after retiring from sumo. The torikumi for the event. Toyohibiki, Toyonoshima, Aoiyama and Endo were also on duty to meet the fans. Keiko begins with some lower division rikishi. Kyokutenho signs an autograph. Rijicho Kitanoumi keeps a distant eye on proceedings. Standing behind him in the suit is yobidashi Tasuke, who belongs to the rijicho's heya. A rear view of Kyokutaisei, who was the model for the tokoyama demonstration at this event. Osunaarashi waves while making his way around the dohyo for the Makuuchi dohyo-iri. Yokozuna Hakuho's dohyo-iri. Yokozuna Harumafuji's dohyo-iri. Yokozuna Kakuryu's dohyo-iri. Kimura Hisanosuke during the shikiri for one of his bouts. Osunaarashi and Endo during the shikiri for their bout, surely a popular clash. Kotoshogiku defeats Aoiyama. Kisenosato vs. Kakuryu. Kakuryu gets the yorikiri win here. Hakuho gets a very high and deep grip on Harumafuji's mawashi in the final bout of the event. Hakuho eventually won the bout. Bringing the event to a conclusion, Satonofuji pulls off a cool recovery as the bow slips from his grasp. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VwktX6fF9Go

Yubinhaad 11,954 Posted August 24, 2014 (edited) One final set of pictures from the last event of this jungyo in Kushiro. In the Makushita keiko session, Gochozan thrusts Nishikigi back to the edge and out. Kawanari and Nankairiki prepare for a practice bout. Takekaze has some words of advice for Ishiura. Kyokutenho, Takekaze and Tokitenku at the side of the dohyo. Endo warms up with some shiko. Chiyomaru lends his chest to Nishikigi. Gagamaru spots the camera. Kakuryu arrives at the dohyo and bows to Oyama-oyakata, whose silver hair can just be seen at the side of the picture. Osunaarashi and Gagamaru share a laugh. And so do Kisenosato and Kitataiki. Outside, Tokushoryu checks out the Taiho photo exhibition which was held at this event. As I wrote in my previous post, former Maegashira Yutakayama went on to be chairman of Kushiro's city council after his retirement from sumo. His collection of banzuke was on display at this event - here, Juryo gyoji Kimura Kenjiro looks at the banzuke for the 1990 Natsu basho, the first banzuke he appeared on. Back in the arena, Shohozan and Endo chat. Terunofuji. Kyokutaisei and Tokitenku in action. Harumafuji gives Osunaarashi a workout. Takayasu is stronger in this yotsu battle against Chiyomaru. And now Takayasu gets a workout from Hakuho. Some smaller opponents now take on the rikishi. Outside, Tamawashi and Sokokurai do some yamageiko, joined by Kagamio on the left. Arawashi seen in the shitaku-beya. Kyokushuho has his oicho-mage prepared by Oitekaze-beya's Tokosaku. And now Tokosaku works on Kyokutenho's hair. Tokosaku again, this time preparing Hakuho's oicho-mage. Kyokai trainer Nakamoto, former Makushita Wakawashi, is massaging the Yokozuna's elbow. Kakuryu has his oicho-mage prepared by Tokotsuru. Takanorappa Endo in the shitaku-beya, enjoying a Calpis before the main event begins. Kakuryu was the model for the tsunashime demonstration here. Later, the three Yokozuna posed for pictures with the event's organisers and promoters. A nice shot of the three Yokozuna. Makuuchi dohyo-iri. Yokozuna Hakuho's dohyo-iri. Yokozuna Harumafuji's dohyo-iri. Yokozuna Kakuryu's dohyo-iri. A picture of Taiho and one of his yusho portraits were on display in the arena. The pictures watch over the dohyo as Kyokutaisei and Osunaarashi prepare for their bout. The Kyokai describes Osunaarashi with the term "magodeshi", which basically means deshi of a deshi - Osunaarashi's shisho was once a deshi of Taiho himself, and of course their heya was previously known as Taiho-beya. Ikioi, Aoiyama and Tamawashi have some fun while waiting for their bouts. Yoshikaze joins them for a game of rock-paper-scissors. The yobidashi parade the kensho banners around the dohyo - as I mentioned in my previous post, the banners were hand-written by the gyoji shortly before the event. Following the end of the event, Jokoryu enjoys some of that fresh Hokkaido air. Kamiyutaka takes a break after a hard day being someone's tsukebito. Toyohibiki makes a friend. A nice smile from the usually inscrutable Tokitenku. Ikioi signs a few last autographs before boarding the bus back to Ryogoku. The bus prepares to leave. Waving in the middle are Myogiryu and yobidashi Shigeo. Gagamaru. Takarafuji and Tokushoryu. Edited August 24, 2014 by Yubinhaad
