Akinomaki 41,864 Posted July 29, 2013 (edited) The 29th wanpaku sumo national tournament was held yesterday in the kokugikan. About 400 4th to 6th year primary school rikishi took part, separate for each year. final rounds: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/36487583 several other videos are listed there from earlier in the tournament, (quality exactly?) the same on Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmlMA0FIT4E The result page still lists last year's data, with the big Touma as the 6th year wanpaku yokozuna in the 28th tournament: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUp_EqBzH8I and the 5th year yokozuna in the 27th tournament (only the 4th year tournament is in the video), in his 4th year the videos look even more incomplete. Akinomaki 41,864 Posted July 29, 2013 (edited) Really nice dohyo-iri (Ustream) of the previous 5th and 4th year wanpaku yokozuna, now in 6th and 5th year (I don't know why they have a yokozuna number one less than the tournament they won) 25th Tokyo tournament (preliminary) They also have nice and big pdf reports for each tournament, so far from 2007-2012, with some pictures and many data about the tournament bouts and the rikishi. Some interesting scenes: a 4th year semi-f. 2013 winner showing a winners pose and getting reprimanded by the referee (21:25). The tearful faces after losses apparently are admissible. In last year's bouts there even was a nichonage and a nice uwatenage. Edit: the positioning may be a mess when the video was watched once - after deleting the cookies from Youtube the 3 links above start at the right position. Akinomaki 41,864 Posted July 30, 2013 Touma in the interview as 6th year wanpaku yokozuna His sumo is quite unattractive, later on his wins are mostly hatakikomi, going more and more backwards. In the final he even pulled a henka-matta. 28th tournament, round: 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, qf, sf, final. Akinomaki 41,864 Posted December 1, 2015 (edited) The thread about the wanpaku sumo tournament this year: http://www.sumoforum.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=34284 I so far only knew of the 2 main primary school championships, both with 4th, 5th and 6th grade divisions: Since 1985 the Wanpaku sumo national tournament わんぱく相撲全国大会 by the sumo kyokai and the JCI Tokyo, with the winners getting the title of wampaku yokozuna from the NSK Since 1988 the All Japan primary school sumo championships 全日本小学生相撲優勝大会 by the (amateur) sumo association, with the winners getting the title of primary school yokozuna from the JSA - that will be on Sunday this week I have next to no information though about the significance of the (since 2003) National youth (shonen) sumo tournament 全国少年相撲選手権大会, which was in October, only that it has middle school division participants as well, like the Hakuho cup. All are held in the kokugikan. The Hakuho cup (since 2010, with divisions for also younger kids) is now partly an international tournament, but definitely a national one, yet so far it wasn't listed on the JSA page of the main amateur tournaments of the year. Wampaku sumo has some forbidden techniques, which are allowed in ozumo: Harite - no slapping, sabaori - no crush down of the opponent with the own weight, izori - the back-drop which Ura (as amateur) is famous for I don't know if there are more and what techniques are forbidden at middle and maybe even high school level. Akinomaki 41,864 Posted March 21, 2016 (edited) ARTE has again something about sumo: this time the son of a (amateur?) rikishi competing in wanpaku sumo. I don't know the father, "one of the greatest sumo champions in Japan", now running a chanko restaurant. With the shikona "Chikara" one won't find anything in the database - maybe the first name in his shikona, maybe he never was in ozumo and simply won the all-Japan amateur title, maybe one of the many Sasaki, that name appears in the end, maybe something is mentioned in the video. No subtitles this time, viewable till Apr. 19th French page: http://www.arte.tv/guide/fr/058363-001-A/graine-de-champion?autoplay=1 video link: http://arte.gl-systemhaus.de/am/tvguide/default/058363-001-A_SQ_2_VF_02246949_MP4-2200_AMM-Tvguide.mp4 German page: http://www.arte.tv/guide/de/058363-001-A/iron-kids?autoplay=1 video link: http://arte.gl-systemhaus.de/am/tvguide/default/058363-001-A_SQ_2_VA_02246962_MP4-2200_AMM-Tvguide.mp4 Edited March 21, 2016 by Akinomaki

Asashosakari 20,311 Posted March 24, 2016 Well, the father's full name is Harumitsu Sasaki according to the video, but I also couldn't match that to any known professional (or well-known amateur) rikishi. The kid, Chikara Sasaki 佐々木 主税, was competing out of Zama-shi in Kanagawa (not sure if mentioned in the video as I skipped through some parts; I got it from the wampaku site). The copyright on the film is 2015, but it's actually covering the 2012 edition of the wampaku nationals where, as depicted, Sasaki reached the last 16, as a fifth-grader. He was also in the fourth-grade competition the year before (first-round exit). He didn't take part in sixth grade; an article I found seems to indicate he was a semifinalist in the Zama qualifying tournament that year. In case we actually see him in Ozumo at some point - he should be graduating middle school next year, so that's the first possible join date.

The 全国少年相撲選手権大会 is an annual tournament for the various sumo clubs / dojos around the country. It is a solely team competition, and has no individual competitions, and determines the best club / dojo in Japan. Each team is made up of a Grade 3 (elementary school, or lower), Grade 4, Grade 5, Grade 6, and a Junior High School student. The winning clubs / dojos from 2012 onwards are as follows: 2012 (9th): Katsushika Shiratori Sumo Club (Tokyo) (defeated Tsugaru in final) 2013 (10th): Tsugaru Sumo Club (Aomori) (defeated Udo Junior Sumo Club from Kumamoto in final) 2014 (11th): Iruma Shonen Sumo Club (Saitama) (defeated Fuji Wanpaku Sumo Club from Shizuoka in final) 2015 (12th): Iruma Shonen Sumo Club (Saitama) (defeated Mitaka Sumo Club from Tokyo in final) Edited May 10, 2017 by mikawa

Thanks for the info regarding his dad's name, I've not been able to find that anywhere. Sasaki Chikara is a good young rikishi, who is about the same level as Tanaka Toranosuke from Japanology's sumo episode. His 4th grade loss in his first bout (second round at the wanpaku) was against a very skilful opponent in Nukui Tetsugu (温井哲弘), whose best result at wanpaku is also last 16. Chikara's loss in Grade 5 was to the eventual winner that year, Shinobashi Hayato (下橋颯斗), so fair play to him. Incidentally, his opponent in the first bout shown in the video (fourth round, or last 32, in the tournament) is called Kiyomiya Itto. His name may not mean much, but I'm sure his sumo club will be familiar to quite a few members in the forum - Komatsuryu Dojo in Tokyo. He unfortunately didn't quality in Grade 6, though it is not known who he lost to during the Zama qualifiers. p.s. Here's a link to an extract from the documentary on Chikara: http://www.dazeddigital.com/artsandculture/article/19726/1/the-struggle-of-the-sumo-wrestlers-son Edited March 28, 2016 by mikawa
