Kintamayama 47,183 Posted April 4, 2004 (edited) Yokozuna Asashouryuu has returned from Mongolia, where he was appointed by the Mongolian PM to the post of "Special Advisor for Youth Sports". "It's a great honor for me. I'd like to help with any advice I can give", he said. As for the "Asashouryuu Park" being built in Ulan Bator, "Since July 11th is our Independence Day, I hope it will be ready by then", he said. Concerning the concern over his left handed kensho air-cutting he said. "I am thinking of correcting that though I'm left-handed, and that is what comes naturally". He also voiced his wish that the Kyokai will have a "Mongolian Jungyo". "Sumo is very popular in Mongolia. we have live transmissions, and many know all the rikishi very well. We should be packing the venue, no problem", he said. Today he had a dohyo -iri at the Ise shrine in Mie. Despite the rain, 4000 fans turned out to watch. Then, there was a one day Makuuchi tournament, where he beat Shimotori in the finals by Tsukidashi, to win this tournament for the second straight year. As for the question of what honours your country might heap on you if you become Yokozuna, as my Father says "Just get there first!"

BuBa 77 Posted April 5, 2004 I remember reading (on this forum?) that many areas of Mongolia are getting electricity for the first time as there is a huge demand to watch Asashoryu on TV. Not just that, there are roads are paved in order to make his visits to certain areas of Mongolia more comfortable. :-)
Manekineko 200 Posted April 6, 2004 Geez, in Croatia it took Pope's visit for some roads to get asphaltised (is that a word? but you know what I mean).

Kashunowaka 300 Posted April 6, 2004 Geez, in Croatia it took Pope's visit for some roads to get asphaltised (is that a word? but you know what I mean). Nope, no asphaltised ;) Paved... According to the dictionary, roads can be asphalted - in other words, one can asphalt them. But perhaps that is uncommon usage. (Enjoying a beer...)
sekihiryu 51 Posted April 7, 2004 according to my former job in road construction I can assure you asphalted is a word but more commonly used is asphalting. eg. what did you do yesterday? " I did some asphalting" Paving is generally used to describe the black stuff being laid by a big machine. Asphalting more commonly refers to laying by hand with wheelbarrows, rakes and handrollers. The whole business is hard work! esp handlaying asphalt, a full wheelbarrow weighs 250 kg, a shade less the Konishiki! imagine wheeling him around all day! since I was the University student on holiday job, guess who always pushed the barrow....me! regardless to say I still have forearms like popeye and a grip strength like Kaio :-/ p.s to Nth Americans its "ASH felt" not "as fault" :-D anyway this is all (Enjoying a beer...)
