Kintamayama 47,187 Posted March 30, 2004 (edited) I have a few questions regarding the shin-deshi. There were 77 of them. Now I read that only 24 will be ranked on the next Banzuke, with their names stated etc.. What happens to the other 53? They wait for next time? I gather the 24 were the ones with the best Mae-zumo records. So the others are banzuke-gai? Or am I totally wrong and they will all be ranked in May, although that seems wrong to me as well.. You know that for Haru the shin-deshi passing mae-zumō are put in batches taking turns in the shin-deshi presentation, and 24 sounds like the perfect number for a 4x6-rectangle of shin-deshi for one batch. Sasanishiki 57 Posted March 30, 2004 Just a hypothetical situation. To get into mae-zumo wouldn't the shin-deshi have to reached the height and weight guidelines for entering the ranks in sumo? Being recruited as shin-deshi does not require meeting these (as far as I am aware), only the potential to be big enough and heavy enough in the future. Perhaps the remaining 53 were too light at this stage? Please correct me if I have my understanding of the shin-deshi recruitment and maezumo admittance wrong. Unit conversions are confusing... :-) Edit: Make that 5'8", not 5'7"... :-P The absolute lower limit is 167 cm = 5 feet, 5 and 3/4 inches. Hypothetically, those that made it dominated so heavily that there were very few who reached three wins to make it onto the Banzuke. I'm not sure how many bouts the Maezumo have, so maybe someone can clarify more on that. Also, a few of them retired, and it's likely that about a dozen of them got injured...
