Sensonishiki 0 Posted January 13, 2009 With all the hullabaloo around the promotion of Harumafuji, the return of Asashoryu, Hakuho's basho streak etc, I have not heard anyone mention the fact that this basho is Chiyotaikai's 60th as an Ozeki! For the arithmetically challenged, thats 10 years at sumo's second highest rank. Chiyotaikai deserves recognition and respect for this remarkable achievement! ;-)
Sasanishiki 57 Posted January 13, 2009 That is a fabulous effort! I love seeing Chiyotaikai when he is on song, and regret that we now only see glimpses of what he was like at his peak. I hope he can show us plenty more of his best before he retires.
Washuyama 662 Posted January 13, 2009 He has started out well this basho. I'm hoping for it to continue and would love to see him challenge for the yusho! Gambatte!!!
Harry 67 Posted January 13, 2009 Yes, it is great to see him with a good start. Let's hope he can keep it up, that his arm holds up for the basho. 10 years as ozeki is quite an achievement, even though he does have a share of the kadoban record. Omedetou gozaimasu and ganbatte kudasai Taikai!
Doitsuyama 1,259 Posted January 13, 2009 Well, it has been mentioned here as soon as he got the kachi-koshi in Aki IIRC. After that this is kind of a non-story, but let me get into the congratulation line nonetheless. How many more basho will it be?

(Neener, neener...) Any idea what is the record for most consecutive bsaho ranked ozeki or yokozuna? Edited January 16, 2009 by Peterao
Asashosakari 20,213 Posted January 16, 2009 Any idea what is the record for most consecutive bsaho ranked ozeki or yokozuna? Kitanoumi with 63+3.
Peterao 3 Posted January 16, 2009 Thanks for that! Chiyotaikai fact for the day: Chiyotaikai has only won two matches on senshuraku in the last four years.
Fujisan 533 Posted January 16, 2009 (edited) I was talking to hidenohana about this yesterday when he mentioned that if Kaio doesn't retire this year 2010 he will have fought bouts in 4 different decades ,,,,,He was quite surprised when I showed him from the NSK Sumo topics that Chiyotaikai had been ranked at Ozeki for 9 basho more than his nearest rival Kaio on the all time list. Asashosakari 20,213 Posted January 16, 2009 Any idea what is the record for most consecutive bsaho ranked ozeki or yokozuna? Kitanoumi with 63+3. BTW, as a related followup: Chiyotaikai's Day 6 bout was his 776th dohyo appearance as an ozeki. His shisho Chiyonofuji combined for 775 as a yokozuna and ozeki. Still ahead: Taiho with 791 and again Kitanoumi with 863. Coincidentally enough, both Taikai and Kitanoumi have/had 107 missed days.
Kotoseiya Yuichi 3 Posted January 17, 2009 I was talking to hidenohana about this yesterday when he mentioned that if Kaio doesn't retire this year 2010 he will have fought bouts in 4 different decades Assuming 2010 is the first year of the second decade of the third millennium, that is. I'd say that's 2011.

I'd say that's 2011. There is something to be said for fighting in the '80's '90's '00's & '10's. I wouldn't quibble semantics if Kaio should last that long. Every year he seems to find a way to carry on despite the expectations of many. (A week ago, I thought he would have been intai by now, so who knows) Chiyotaikai, on the other hand, continues to look like he is having fun out there and is one of my guilty pleasures to watch in spite of his enduring mediocrity. High level mediocrity, of course; but not being dethroned in 10 years is an amazing accomplishment.
