Kintamayama 47,179 Posted November 4, 2003 (edited) Kaiou was injured again today. At degeiko at Isenoumi, during a bout with Asasekiryuu, he felt a sharp pain in his tail bone, a pain probably associated with his back problems. He had 11 bouts (with Asasekiryuu and Kotomitsuki) and others and was 7-4. When the pain became unbearable, he withdrew from keiko, loosened his mawashi and sat down in a corner. "I had these pains since October 30th, but it's the first time I've felt them during keiko. I'm tired..", he said, as he was icing the affected area. Lately, he's been to Kokonoe, Sadogatake and Isenoumi for keiko and was looking good. The prospects for a kadoban yusho were looming, but "I did feel I had a good workout till the pain came, though - I had 100 bouts in the last 5 days.. I suppose I've been over-working", he speculated. "I don't want my Oyakata to tell me to retire!!", he added. No hospital, just a massage for the tired bones. Ironically, since last year, Tomozuna -beya's Fukuoka lodgings are situated in a former hospital, and KaioU's private room is in the ex- X ray room. He was injured on day 3 of last Kyushu basho and went kyujo, prompting talk of a jinx.. But there is no sign of his relaxing. He knows this is a major Basho for him- Kyujo=Sekiwake. Some papers are saying he's putting all on the line, "If I go MK, I'm retiring!!", he is reported to have said. This, from the rikishi who needed 12 wins to become Yokozuna only two months ago. When he became Ozeki, Tomozuna Oyakata said :" If he drops to Sekiwake, he will have no choice but to retire. That is an Ozeki's duty". So there seems to be a solemn agreement between the two. The 31 year old will do his best to overcome the intai hurdle. Takamisakari still sidelined. Only light keiko again.. "I don't want to do anything unreasonable and break something", he said. "I'm not the only one here. Please encourage the new Sanyaku Iwakiyama some more", he said, briskly walking away. Futenou (Juryo East 7) is now sporting his first mage. Being a college champion, he started his pro career at Makushita 15 and climbed the ranks quicker than the growth of his hair (took him 2 bashos to reach Juryo..).Now he finally has enough for a semi-decent mage. "I'm very happy. Now I finally feel like a real Rikishi", he chortled, showing off his very small mage. -- Edited November 4, 2003 by Kintamayama
Takanorappa 97 Posted November 4, 2003 Kaiou was injured again today. Kaio, Asashoryu, Musashimaru, Musoyama, Takamisakari (did I miss anyone) all injured, and Chiyotaikai's "fat from being happy. :-/ (Laughing...) It could be an interesting sanyaku soroibumi on Day 15. At any rate, the sumo games should be a coin toss :-P Tomozuna Oyakata said :" If he drops to Sekiwake, he will have no choice but to retire. That is an Ozeki's duty". You have to wonder how Dejima and Miyabi feel about the Oyakata's comments. I personally feel that Kaio shouldn't be forced to leave should he drop. Despite his bad back, he's still got a lot of power left in him. Let's hope it's just a minor injury and we've still got some Sanyaku by the end of the basho. Hang in there, Kaio! Naifuzan 1 Posted November 4, 2003 Seems like this could be a good basho for Tochiazuma, who seems to be the only ozeki (and above) in good shape.

Let's hope it's just a minor injury and we've still got some Sanyaku by the end of the basho. Hang in there, Kaio! It probably has more to do with the fact that Kaio was litterally a Yokozuna candidate just last basho. To go from that to demotion to Sekiwake in less than 4 months isn't exactly a notable achievement and I think Kaio and his Oyakata know this.
