Asashosakari 19,667 Posted December 17, 2008 (edited) Kinki University's sumo club has announced that their top graduates Daisuke Sugiyama and Devon Makoto Aoki have decided which stables to join - Sugiyama will be going to Isegahama-beya, Aoki to Kise-beya. A press conference will be held on Friday. Vital stats: Sugiyama 183 cm / 155 kg, runner-up at the 2007 All-Japan university championships, openweight winner of the 2008 university individual weight class championships Aoki 180 cm / 150 kg, winner of the 2008 West Japan university championships (and semifinalist in the openweight tournament that Sugiyama won) Edit: Sugiyama joins his Kinki senior Homarefuji at Isegahama-beya, and perhaps more importantly just like Homarefuji (and the shisho) he is also from Aomori prefecture. Charlemagne 0 Posted December 18, 2008 Hmm... These two heya are getting all the prospective recruits. Asi if Ogata, Fukao, Kamei and Shiratsuka weren't enough for Kise-beya. :)

madorosumaru 7 Posted December 21, 2008 A classmate of Adiya Baasandorj from Tottori Johoku High School has decided to join Oguruma Beya. He is Rei Nogami, the captain of the sumo team. The 18-year-old is 175 cm tall and weighs 125 kg. "It's been my dream to become a pro since I was in primary school," Nogami said at the press conference. "I want to develop the kind of sharp, penetrating tachiai of my sempai, Kotomitsuki-zeki." Oguruma Oyakata has known about the new deshi since the kid was in grade school. "He used to be a bit on the quiet, gentle side, but Johoku has really toughened him up," said the shisho. "I don't care if he is still rough-edged but I want him to develop the power to blast opponents out of the dohyo." His high school coach is optimistic about his future. "He works twice as hard as others during keiko. If he follows his oyakata diligently, I am sure he will become an excellent rikishi." When asked about former teammate, Baasandorj, with whom he will make his ozumo debut next basho, the young recruit said, "He is now a rival. I am not going to let him beat me." Kintamayama 45,530 Posted December 23, 2008 (edited) Twins are joining Takanohana beya. They are Masatada and Masaoki Ogasawara out of Toyodai Ushikyu high school, the school that won the inter-high school championships. Although there never were twin sekitori, they declared their wish to become sekitori. They were told by their father to join Takanohana beya as he was " a splendid man". They both stayed at the heya back when Takanohana was Yokozuna and they were in the fifth grade. "My impression is that the Oyakata is a great man!* declared Masatada. Masatada reached the top 16 in the high school nationals, and Masaoki was second in the Kanto championships. Together with the new Mongolian ( who BTW has been christened Takanoiwa), Takanohana beya seems to be awakening. Kintamayama 45,530 Posted January 5, 2009 (edited) 13 new recruits including: Oguruma beya has recruited a Waseda University sumo club alumni-the first from Waseda in 70 years, 直江俊司 (Naoe Toshiji) 22 years old, 182/130. The new guy injured his shoulder and left the sumo club in his third year, and is now in his 4th year. "Last autumn I decided I wanted to become a rikishi . I did look for other jobs but in the end decided to pursue my dream. I'd like to not shame the name of my university and hope to become a sekitori within three years!", he declared. which was mistakenly posted on the "Kyushu basho new recruits" thread. Current checkup, probably, as the two Mongolians are banzuke-gai for all intents and purposes, and these are not counted as new entries of course.

Aoki is from Nara prefecture and is Kise-beya's third collegiate recruit after Shiratsuka and Ogata who does not hail from the shisho's alma mater Nichidai. Not only is Sugiyama from the same prefecture as Isegahama Oyakata, he went to the same high school as his shisho. At Gosho Kawahara Commercial High School, he finished in the top 8 in the Inter-High tournament and took fifth place at the Kokutai. The other day, he went back to his hometown to make his rounds of "aisatsu"--paying his respects and informing various people, including the mayor, of his plans to turn professional. As part of the tour, he visited his alma mater and worked out with the current club members. After about 20 intense bouts, one young kohai had this to say, "Once Sugiyama-san grabbed hold of the mawashi, there was nothing I could do. He was just too strong." His former coach said, "Joining ozumo has always been his dream. I think it is a wonderful thing that he never gave up and made it a reality." His parents were there to observe the keiko. His father, who was a coach at the dojo where Sugiyama began doing sumo as a third grader, expressed the parental hopes, "We want him to remain healthy and injury-free. To start, we would like to see him make it to juryo." The 21-year-old Daisuke will start with mae-zumo in Hatsu Basho. His forte is yori from the hidari yotsu stance. As for his aspirations, he said, "I want to be a sekitori as soon as possible. I want to face Goeido-zeki, whom I couldn't beat in high school. I would like to see how much stronger I have gotten." Asashosakari 19,667 Posted January 6, 2009 The Takanohana twins; According to Sports Hochi, the twins caused some minor amusement for the assembled oyakata by measuring exactly the same in both height and weight, 173/123. Thank goodness they'll be distinguishable by their shikona soon...

Kotoviki 16 Posted January 8, 2009 I was fortunate enough to have a talk with Sugiyama today after the reporters finished with him. He is very nice and polite, quite cute and HUGE! He is just massive... and muscular! When I started talking to him he was quite overwhelmed that I knew so much about him. I guess one day I'll have to explain that there are those of us here reading this kind of info with enthusiasm! We finished up our chat with his promise to do his best and I gave him a big chocolate kiss, the look on his face was priceless. He suddenly changed to English to thank me. He's a good kid. I'll put my money on him...

Sasanishiki 57 Posted January 11, 2009 I'm struck by the fact that there is only one scrawny guy amongst these recruits. The rest are of a decent weight, or at least they won't have to gorge themselves immediately in an attempt not to get blown away on size alone. Just as an impression, is this different to the last few basho we've seen? I have the feeling there have been a number of lighter, younger guys entering in say the last year (or is my impression biased by, say, the former host guy that entered?) madorosumaru 7 Posted January 12, 2009 Eita Kishi was a judo star at his high school in Kyoto. He had started doing judo at age 3, and by the time he entered junior high, he was already 170 cm tall and weighed over 90 kg. At Kyoto Kyoei Gakuen High, he was the captain of the judo team that qualified for the Inter-High tournament. He had always liked sumo and enjoyed watching it on TV as a kid. Chiyotaikai was his favorite rikishi. He decided to join ozumo after the Inter-High meet. "I told my family that I wanted to give it a try," he said. He also told his coach of his intentions and the latter contacted the people at Kokonoe Beya. A meeting was set up with Kokonoe Oyakata, where the shisho told the boy, "If you have the desire, come and join us. If you are not sure, it's better that you don't." One of his teachers said, "When he loses, he has a tendency to get down on himself. I am a bit concerned because he is such a nice, gentle boy. However, [he should find strength with] all his classmates solidly behind him." His judo coach said, "He is very dedicated and practices with intensity. He has a strong lower body and has the knack of knowing what to do to win a match." As for the young man, he intends to develop a "tsuppari like Chiyotaikai-zeki's." His goal is, of course, to become a sekitori.
