Kokkai won the Juryo division by beating Senshuuyama in the final with

Yorikiri.

It's the first prize Chiyotaikai has won since he started going out with

his girlfriend, Kawamura Hikaru. Asked what he would do with the

$20,000 something odd dollars prize money, he answered. "We shall see", citing a famous poet. He also acknowledged that he took his sweetheart on a trip to Saipan (anybody?) "It was raining all the time so we had to stay indoors. We relaxed.", he said. (wink, wink, nod, nod, hint, hint..)

Asashouryuu fought Asasekiryuu in the semifinals. This of course was the

first time the two Mongolians from Takasago met on the dohyo in anything

resembling an official tournament. Asasekiryuu reached the semis by

beating KaioU with Yorikiri, making his dream come true. Asashouryuu

then beat him by Yorikiri, upholding his honor. "It's the first meeting

between us in a tournament, so I was happy." said Shouryuu, happy about

his kouhai's (junior's) achievement. He is hoping to meet Asasekiryuu in

a hon-basho playoff some day.

Yes, the Juryo and Makuuchi are as of the Aki banzuke. Should be so, since it would take the fun out of the Juryo-Makuuchi-promotion predictions...

It would also severely compress the time for making the new official banzuke, giving NSK some real work to do instead of revising kosho rules (Laughing...) Just kidding of course... :-)

You are wrong, if you believe the NSK still is mulling over the new banzuke. :-)

You know, there is ONE gyōji writing the whole banzuke. And he takes his time for each rikishi - and there are a lot of rikishi with about 8 kanji or so per rikishi. So the whole banzuke must be ready really fast - I believe it is finished a few days after senshūraku.

I said I was just kidding, but perhaps it didn't come across so well :-)

Seriously though, how soon after the basho does the NSK finish making the new banzuke?

Within a few days after the completion of the tournament. We know this because the new Juryo promotees are generally announced by mid-week.

I'd like to know what he would say if he spilled that ink...

I always thought that the making (and writing) of the banzuke was top secret and nobody may see the banzuke before its publication.

Therefore I'm very surprised that it's allowed to take a picture from the writing of the banzuke.

Even if the picture shows only a small part of the banzuke, it's possible to read some shikona (not me, but those who can read these kanji...).

Anyway, really great picture!

I believe this picture was shown only after the banzuke in question was made public. Otherwise indeed part of the banzuke would've been revealed beforehand.

There seems to be a lot of differing opinions about how long it takes to write the original copy of the banzuke. Someone like Kimura Yodo who wrote the banzuke between 1985 and 2000 evidently used 8-9 days. His successor probably started slower. I know I would. (Sigh...)

There is also an ita-banzuke, a largish wooden plaque attached to the yagura tower outside the ozumo venue (Is yagura still in use?) which includes all the rikishi as well. I've understood it's written by a gyoji selected to become the next writer of the real banzuke but I might be wrong about this.

It is an absolutely daunting task. I think it is a great work of art. Calligraphy kicks ass! (Sigh...)

Cheers
