yoda 0 Posted November 29, 2007 You are right about the ground wrestling, and submission techniques. Ama too, has life long wrestling instincts. His tsuppari and harite will serve just deflecting trick to Fedor's defence and will eventually lead to a grappling. Once grappling starts, Fedor has no chance. I saw Asa's two brothers fighting in K-1. They seem to be superior wrestlers on the ground. Their main strategy was actually to bring their opponents down first. And didn't see anyone making much of an impact by punching them either. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolgorsuren_Serjbudee http://www.puroresufan.com/roster/wolf.php I think sumo has pretty poor reputation due to the ill fated fights of Akebono, who has completely different strategy - bulldozing. Jakusotsu 6,050 Posted November 29, 2007 (edited) This imaginary contest is futile, because Ama (and any other rikishi) doesn't have any defense. Defense doesn't exist in sumo - apart from henka, which wouldn't serve him well. One punch and it's over. Edit: come to think about it, sumo doesn't have any offense either. None of the sumo techniques is suitable for disabling an opponent, which is crucial in MMA but a no-no in sumo. Edited November 29, 2007 by Jakusotsu

kaiguma 0 Posted November 29, 2007 (edited) I have an idea. Lets just try to construct fighting scene between Fedor and Ama, round by round. I will throw a starting scene and you guys can develop it further.Fedor 106 kg, 182 cm -- Ama 123kg, 185 cm. Superior puncher Superior tsuppari, harite Judo, Sambo techniques Sumo, Mongolian wrestling techniques Superior submission techniques Body slam techniques Stamina Stamina Round 1: - Aware of Fedor's super punching skills, Ama starts cautious, defending his head and watches him closely - Aware of Ama's agility and superior strength, Fedor avoids getting too close, or cornered. - Fedor throws few probing punches towards Ama, looking for possible openings and Ama tests his defence against Fedor - Ama throws his own punches, testing Fedor's movements. Fedor circles around to distract Ama's defence and Ama, in turn, stays put, waiting for a right moment to charge. - Fedor makes nifty hook and uppers swings, Ama counters with his tight defense. His physical strength helps to endure Fedor's punishing punches. Then charges with his own straights the moment Fedor paused his attack. Fedor avoids the punches, but Ama makes it tsuppari to the chest and charges on. The fighters reach the ring and starts wrestling ... Okay, let me first contextualize. I am possibly the original forumer claiming (vocally at least) that Ama can become Ozeki. Dig around and you can see this for yourself. I am proud to be among his biggest fans here. That said >>> No way is this scenario going down the way you have written it. (Nodding yes...) Even with 1 full year of MMA training, Ama will be toast in 30-60 seconds. Fedor would not be as cautious as you described. Only the first point is correct. - Aware of Fedor's super punching skills, Ama starts cautious, defending his head and watches him closely (circling and staying on the move) - Aware of Ama's speed and agility and equal strength, Fedor immediately goes for a few vicious fakes and lower leg kicks. - As soon as Ama is slightly tripped up or opens his defense in the slightest, fedor goes straight for his face. - If Ama catches a nasty jab 2 or 3 times in the nose: Fedor never lets up and it's over fast. Under 45 seconds. - If Ama weathers the first fury of blows: the moment Ama backs off Fedor tackles like a lion, getting a quick submission hold and... - Over within 1 minute from the bell. Now, if you give Fedor 1 year of training on the Sumo dohyo, Ama still wins by yorikiri in under 5 seconds ;-) Edited November 29, 2007 by kaiguma

yoda 0 Posted November 29, 2007 No way is this scenario going down the way you have written it. (Typing at computer...) Even with 1 full year of MMA training, Ama will be toast in 30-60 seconds. Never seen such a vicious opponent, Fedor frustrates and starts to trow punches, and side kicks. For a seasoned rikishi, the side kick are felt like that bamboo stick during a keiko. - Years of sumo training helps Ama withstand the punches. Ama pushes Fedor to a corner and starts to grapple. Confident with his super judo technique, Fedor tries to ippon Ama, and again fails. - Ama counters Fedors move with his recently learned technique from Asa's brother Blue Wolf, A Mongol Hammer full body slam, three times in row. - Shocked, Fedor tries to use submission hold of Ama's leg. Ama lifts Fedor up in the air 6 feet and slams Fedor to the ground once more. - Fedor endures the punishment physically. Mentally, he has never seen such a challenge. Irritated by daring Ama, Fedor charges head on, Ama uses Fedor's momentum to perform a half pull down along with kneeing and delivers one final knee blow to Fedors face. - Fedor receives his first and last ever KO. Sasanishiki 57 Posted November 30, 2007 - Years of sumo training helps Ama withstand the punches. Ama pushes Fedor to a corner and starts to grapple. Confident with his super judo technique, Fedor tries to ippon Ama, and again fails. No, I don't think so. The techniques in sumo really do not allow its athletes to take punches. Yes, Ama has speed and skill, and has also developed a certain amount of stamina and ability to endure hardship from sumo, but someone kicking and punching you is quite different. It would take Ama or another sumo wrestler quite a while to be confident and adept at facing a boxer or kickboxer. The sumo wrestler's will might be strong but their ability to counter these new skills in MMA or K-1, let alone use them competently themselves, would take a long time to develop and train. yoda 0 Posted November 30, 2007 Thanks for all your insightful comments. I clearly stand minority here. I still hope (wish, to be honest) that sumotori of Ama's caliber would present top notch opponent. Never know unless I actually see it. Maybe, Asa retires and gives us opportunity to witness this dream fight.
Jakusotsu 6,050 Posted November 30, 2007 That video reminded me quickly why I don't like "sports" where it's allowed to strike a man when he's down. That's just backyard brawling, sorry. (Typing at computer...)
Shimpu 0 Posted November 30, 2007 (edited) For me it's pretty obvious that every single Yokozuna would be knocked out quickly on the K1 or MMA arena. Maybe not in the pathetic Akebono's fashion though. Same goes in the opposite direction. Every MMA champion would be kicked out from the dohyo even faster. Period.
