Dale's Real-Player Movies

Recommended Posts

For those of you who don't mind downloading Megabytes worth of interesting movies, Dale has just posted several interesting movies... to be found either at Dohyo.com

or Banzuke.com (Banzuke.com is quicker).

Check out "Takanohana Career highlights" and "Yokozuna dohyo-iri movies" links at the bottom of the page. Also, you can find Doitsuyama-zeki's movie of Asashoryu's yokozuna promotion among "Miscellaneous sumo movies".

Thanks a million, Dale!  (Aww...)  (Aww...)  (Aww...)

I just finished watching "Takanohana Career highlights", and I strongly recommend downloading it!

Great viewing.

Having only followed sumo actively for about half a year it was very interesting historically.

There were some great Takanohana-Akebono bouts as well.

Too bad I don't know japanese tho  (Laughing...)

If only he used some other file format than RealVideo... I abhor it! The RealVideo Player is most likely the lousiest piece of code ever scraped together. Not that it's Dale's fault, of course. (Plain look...)

I couldnt agree more!

Your criticism is well taken, but it COULD be a bit more constructive. I happen to be in some contact with Dale, and it ain't so easy to find a format which suits all the audience. Since I have quite some older videos from Eurosport transmissions, and intend to make some movies from them to put on Dale's site, I too am very interested in a CONSTRUCTIVE discussion about a suitable format in which to make the movies. Just bashing the RealPlayer isn't very constructive. Any suggestions?

I don't mind RealVideo.  I've found it to be OK  :-D

One alternative, which I don't support but has to be suggested, is Windows Media Player format.  I don't support it because I'm not a big fan of Microsoft, and a lot of people use platforms other than Windoze.

Another alternative is QuickTime (from Apple).  The viewer is again free and easy to use.  It's not a Microsoft product but runs fine on windows as well.

ANYTHING but RealVideo. I will dig any codec there is for any operating system ever written if that's needed to get rid of RealVideo.

I'm no multimedia expert but aren't practically all current operating systems capable of supporting some sort of MPG right away without any need for downloading proprietary codecs and players like those cursed ones from Real? Even QuickTime would be preferable. Even Video for Windows! Anything but!

I guess you didn't like the alternative image suggested on the page you reach by clicking the above image?

Call me clueless, but what exactly is the problem with realplayer?

I don't understand why you dislike it so much. Is it the video quality? Is it just something with the player itself that you don't like? The format? What?

Please enlighten me. I don't understand why you dislike it so much. I've never had a problem with it.

What isn't? This will be a long message.

The files themselves appear quite inefficient to me. I might be imagining but I think most other codecs just produce higher quality video for less storage space.

Whenever I download a RealVideo file from, say, Dale's server, the player is very clueless what to do with the d@m

Well... I dont quite share Kotoseiya Yuichi's burning hatred for realplayer. But I still find most video formats a lot better and easier to play.

Maybe it's just me. But the only place I see anyone using real video format is Dales video page.

Mpeg, div-x or x-vid are a lot more common and seems to me like better choices.

Just don't get me wrong here. I'm a great fan of the sumo movies page and I'm very thankful that it exists.

Real Video is still better than no video, to me  :-)

I hate it. I hate it! I HATE IT!

I wouldn't think a piece of software could inspire such unrelenting hatred.  :-0  :-)

But no... When a tiny file has been downloaded in its entirety, will the playback start? No, the tiny file needs first to be loaded into memory from the hard drive. This takes tens of seconds sometimes. Tens! Then the playback, low quality as ever, begins.

Suppose I want to replay the file. Click on the play button and what happens? No instant replay but another loading of the file into memory, again wait of several seconds. These are tiny files!

When I'm disgusted enough and close the application, it opens up another window to beg money or download more of the same bullshit or whatever.

Wow. I've never experienced any of those problems you describe here. If I want to replay a file, it replays without delay.

I also never get another window asking for money or to download other applications. (Well except for the bi-monthly "request" that I update my software.)  :-)

RealPlayer is partly spyware! I hate spyware! See for details here. Even the installation process is hideous! Everything about RealPlayer is WRONG!

Didn't know about this though. Very interesting info.

Real Video is still better than no video, to me

Agreed. Until Dale sees fit to change, it's better than nothing, and I'm not gonna complain.

I too haven't had significant problems with RealPlayer in its various formats.  And contrary to Oshidashi-zeki's experience, I do know of and use several sites in addition to Dale's whose choice format is RealMedia.

Here is an interesting article from Flash (the Macromedia product) magazine: here

It notes WindowsMedia has a 70% share of the streaming video market today.

The contrast is simply infinite between my and Rijicho's experiences with Real Player!  :-)

I have never had any problems with it and no delays in replay-mode etc. Surely other formats may be lot better and convenient but Real Player has served my sumo hunger well so haven't had much active desire to wish for its demise or change of format by Dale :-)

Here is an interesting article from Flash (the Macromedia product) magazine: here

This page has an interesting passage:

The RealPlayer has always been part of the Netscape Browser, but with Netscape loosing the Browser War, the potential for Real has diminished. The RealPlayer was one of the first technologies that really enabled streaming video on the web. When the DotCom age came to an end, Real quickly started charging money for a Pro-version of their player. They also made it constantly harder to find the free player on their web pages. In addition, they have desperately tried to gather email addresses to use for unwanted junk mail and the whole player is cluttered with advertising.

The RealPlayer had a competitive advantage with the support of the SMIL authoring language, allowing far more than just video. Real failed to develop good tools for creating SMIL files and the format never took off.

The last time I tried to download RealPlayer, I couldn't find the free version at all. This will be the death of the RealPlayer. If you have any shares in this company, get rid of them them as quickly as possible. Without an easily available, free alternative, the RealPlayer will die and it will be the first to lose against Flash MX video capabilities.

To clarify; I'm most grateful to Dale for his time and efforts. I just wish the files were of some other format.

I usually complain a lot about software. I usually complain a lot about everything.

Realplayer is one thing I NEVER had any problem with-and I have almost every shape and size of streaming software known to man. And I don't hate Microsoft either, although this is irrelevant..

I have the free player and never had any problem locating and downloading it.

BUT- then came RealOne-there's a real piece of heavy junk. The loading/playback took a lot of time, just like Riji explained.I initially paid 14 dollars a month without knowing, then found that it can be used for free, got really pissed at the quality, and promptly went back to Realaudio 8, where I still live today..

BTW, to see an example of fantastic, really fantastic streaming video quality with sound, here is a webcam in the center of Baghdad in Realplayer format:

http://www.cbsnews.com/htdocs....WebCast

If it's dark, wait till it's daytime in Iraq.

Even in fullscreen mode, I have rarely (if ever) seen this kind of quality in streaming video. Fluke?

Maybe fluke... Maybe big corporation with big money and big bandwidth behind this webcam -- CBS  (Punk rocker...)

I wouldn't touch RealOne with a six feet pole. As long as realmedia files are encoded with the RP8-codec, I can live with it. I'm not liking it though.

BTW, there is a way to get rid of RealPlayer and still be able to play realmedia files. Haven't tested it, so standard caveats apply. There is also an ethically questionable (i.e. rather illegal) way to access ram-streams. (Looks around...) *coughcough*
